VOL. XXVII—No. 240 COUNTY'S NEW CAR BUILDING 65 ON ASCOT RACE CARD SUNDAY Duray and DePalma to Settle Question of Who's Who LOS ANGELES, June 21.—Jack Dempsey will be master of ceremonies at Ascot tomorrow and "gasoline marshal" of the day. No less than 49 speed kings and 25 motorcyclists will participate in the 12 events. Leon Duray, who has been busting Ralph DePalma's records with his new 1925 Miller Special, is expected to give the Italian another scrap for his life tomorrow. Limited Signals Worse Than None Electric signals on three or four fifths of the county's railway crossings is worse than on none at all! Yesterday's tragedy in which an Anaheim woman was killed illustrates the fact. The reason is that most drivers, particularly those who haven't driven much, assume that every crossing has one, and when they don't hear the bell fail to stop. The auto clubs, Chambers of Commerce, etc., can conduct no more worthwhile campaign than one to compel signals on all crossings.—Ed. Leon Duray, who has been busting Ralph DePalma's records with his new 1925 Miller Special, is expected to give the Italian another scrap for his life tomorrow. Yesterday Duray set a new record for a lap, 29 4-5 seconds, which is 1-5 under the best previous figure. Later on Duray piloted the German Mercedes of F.W. Matthiesen III in 30 seconds better time over the bill-and-dale course than DePalma made two weeks ago. Eddie Meyer whose driving of the made-over Ford constructed in 1902 for Barney Oldfield, had a collision with Steve Elmore, winner of the San Luis Obispo race on Memorial Day, but both are expected to appear tomorrow. All of the automobile events are handicap the back mark men being forced to drive their limit from the drop of the flag in order to overtake the front mark men. That its output frequently has been breaking records indicates that the popularity of the Nash is greater than ever. The advantages of keeping output down to a level which is justified by the retail business are many. One is that the company is always on its tiptoes, ready to introduce any improvement, mechanical or otherwise, that appears to add to comfort, appearance, economy or power. At the same time the manufacturers are far-sighted enough so that the purchaser of a Nash need not fear that his car will be among the back numbers before he has obtained the cream of its use. The purchaser, however, must put in his order early, or he may be compelled to wait for delivery. A man greater than his misfortunes shows that he was not deserving of them.—Atlanta Georgian. NEWHALL TUNNEL LIGHTER Two thousand motorists daily are now rejoicing over the installation of lights in the New half tunnel. These modern safety devices have been placed by the state highway commission, and now the way is thoroughly lighted, eliminating chances of accident. Funds for this improvement are derived from the two event gasoline tax. This artery of travel is heavily patronized at all times, and on holidays from 4000 to 10,000 vehicles pass through it within 2 hours. The Blue Bird, Red Bird and Black Bird bathing girls created a sensation as they rode by in their special cars. After the parade a banquet and dance was staged on a huge old lumber schooner bought by the Vitagraph Film Company to be remodeled into an ancient craft for one of their productions. The Willys-Overland dealers' report of the day's doings, ran something like this: "The music was mallifluous, the cause meritorious, the acting felicitous and the scenery splendiferous, but that was all superfluous, for the costumes were sufficiently diaphanous to make the approval unanimous." 10,000,000th Ford Will Tour the U.S. DETROIT, Mich., June 21.—A new and outstanding achievement in the automobile industry of America was attained here when the ten-millionth Model "T" Ford car left the final assembly in the Highland Park plant of the Ford Motor Co. The new federal tax bill brings a reduction of one-half in the tax levied upon tires, tubes and accessories. Where this tax was formerly five per cent, it is now two and one-half per cent. The five per cent tax on new car and automobiles parts remain unchanged. While the reduction apparently is small, the aggregate will amount to a considerable sum for So. Calif. motorists. California’s tire bill amounts to approximately $75,000,000 annually; and it pays additional millions for accessories, so that the tax reduction to all motorists in the state will total $2,000,000. This is approximately one-fifth of the sum raised by the state gasoline tax. So. Calif., with over 40 per cent of the motor vehicles in the state will benefit to the extent of $800,000. DETROIT, Mich., June 21.—A new and outstanding achievement in the automobile industry of America was attained here when the ten-millionth Model "T" Ford car left the final assembly in the Highland Park plant of the Ford Motor Co. The motor, bearing the number 10,000,000, was completed June 4 and was assembled into a touring car, the most popular of all Ford body types. Each Ford is 11½ feet long, and if the ten million Fords were placed in a long line end to end they would extend 21,780 miles. In celebration of having attained a 10,000,000 production record, the company announces that Ford car No. 10,000,000 will make a coast to coast trip as signifying the nation-wide popularity of the Ford and its appeal to every class of driver.
