DECIDE SOON ON HARBOR ELECTION Each day brings nearer a decision by "The Committee of Fifty" on its attitude toward calling election for $1,500,000 bonds for Orange-co harbor, says Harry Welch, secretary of the committee and of County Harbor C. of C. "Orange-co citizens probably will know at least by August what the decision will be. We realize that persons are obliged to know what our ultimate verdict will be but all we can do is to fix a tentative date for the announcement of our recommendations." Various subcommittees are investigating phases of the harbor development program. Welch said some preliminary reports are practically complete. Welch explained the situation like this: "Some committees are working and some are vitually through. Later we must piece our material together and make deductions. The decision on the bond vote probably will come for consideration last. "At present we consider the tour of Los Angeles harbor, set for June 26, as one of the most important occasions in the immediate future. A few days after this the committee of 50 will meet and I expect this meeting will bring out the fact that our work is nearing completion." At a meeting of the committee last week L. F. Coburn, chairman, of Orange, was authorized to name a new committee on industries. Colburn said that he might make the names of the committee members public this week. McADOO DOES NOT WORRY OVER RULES WASHINGTON, June 18.—William G. McAdoo, candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, announced today that he was not concerned about the proposed abolition of the two-thirds rule in the Democratic national convention. Accompanied by his wife, daughters and a party of political friends, McAdoo passed thru Washington enroute to New York to attend the convention. "It is immaterial to me," he said, in reply to questions concerning the abolition of the two-thirds rule. "I think we will win and I am confident of the result, whether the nomination is made by the two-thirds or the majority rule." CARPENTER DEAD SHANGHAI, June 19.—Frank G. Carpenter, well known author who has been traveling in the Orient, died at his home in Nanking early today after an illness of several weeks, according to a report reaching here. Mr. Carpenter left Seattle, Wash., last February for his Oriental tour and was stricken with an attack of cystitis on May 25. It was understood here today that his remains will be taken to the United States for burial by Chester Watten Kuhn, secretary. Mellon was denounced today as "the arch bootlegger of the age," by State Senator Charles Taylor of Montana, permanent chairman of the farmer-labor-progressive convention meeting here. Taylor's attack upon Mellon came while he was assailing high government officials generally. "At the meeting of the First Internationale of capitalism at Cleveland last week sat Harry M. Daugherty and Andrew Mellon, the arch bootlegger of the age," Taylor declared, and added: "I would rather sit with the reddest reeds than with that bunch that met in Cleveland." Taylor was elected permanent chairman through the support of communist delegates. "This is no time to attack the reels," he said. "That is not part of our program. We are here to form a mass class third party, which every farmer and tollers in the country should join." The enthusiastic applause which greeted this remark was soon lost in the hilarious demonstration which followed when Taylor swung into an attack upon Democrats. Blaming both old paries alike for responsibility in the recent scandals at Washington, Taylor said: "The Democrats looted millions while the Republicans took only thousands."
