SHADYBROOK NOW OPEN TO PUBLIC Mountain home sites at Shadybrook is beautiful Silverado canyon are now being offered Anaheimers by W. E. Moyer and Co. and R. C. O'Bryan, owners and subdividers. A. Courtail, sales manager, in announcing today the opening of Unit No. 1, stated the improvement included two miles in the heart of Silverado canyon and that from $150,000 to $250,000 would be expended in making it the resort of Orange-co. "This is a strictly high-class improvement where every effort will be made to retain the wild beauty of the canyon, combined with modern comforts for campers," declared Mr. Courtail. "We are building playgrounds, our own reservoir and electric lighting plant, swimming pool, park, civic center and splendid roads. Ground for a 60-foot highway thru the center of the property is being dedicated to the county and every lot will face a 20-foot road. The roads will be lined with flowering trees and shrubs such as acacias and jacarandas." In building the dam for the reservoir to bed rock the stream flow has been tripled. Pools will be enlarged and restocked with trout. Camps will be furnished cedar log slabs brot from Big Bear at the same cost as ordinary rough lumber and the log cabin type of the architecture will prevail. The woodland will be stocked with northern China pheasants and eastern redbirds. "Shadybrook is only 25 miles, an hour's ride, from Anaheim." WONDER OIL WELL DOWN 4700 FEET The Wonder Oil Co.'s test well on Brookhurst avenue is down 4700 feet, one of the lessors declared today. It is expected the company will cement off within a short time. One man who has any appeals be made to the league of nations. There has been talk that Japan would issue a manifesto upon the exclusion issue, "addressed to the whole world," but no move in this direction will be taken immediately, if at all. Receipt of the American reply has opened the whole immigration question in the press. This circumstance, taken with the opening of the diet next week, has served to stimulate activity on the part of the "jingoes" who are accusing the United States of imperialism. SLOW PICKING JURY Selection of a jury to try J. B. Brooks of Los Angeles, charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Mrs. Stena Duncan of Montebello, who died as the result of an auto crash on the San Diego highway, was still in progress today in the superior court of Judge F. C. Drumm, Peremptory challenges were being used freely by both the defense and the state. BALLOT UPON SIX C. OF C. DIRECTORS Primary balloting for six new directors of the Anaheim C. of C. closes at 6 o'clock tomorrow evening Thursday. All members are urged by Secretary George W. Reid to cast their votes. TIMELY VIEWS & WORLD TOPICS "NEAR EAST IS DANGER ZONE OF WORLD," SAYS "Y" HEAD "The Near East is the danger zone of the world—more so now than, ever," in the judgment of John R. Mott, General Secretary of the Y. M. C. A., who has just toured the Levant for the purpose of finding out. He says: "Three of the most powerful religions of the world impinge on one another and the rigid medieval civilization of Islam clashes with the intensely nationalistic modern civilization—all" in the WONDER OIL WELL DOWN 4700 FEET The Wonder Oil Co.'s test well on Brookhurst avenue is down 4700 feet, one of the lessors declared today. It is expected the company will cement off within a short time. One man who has watched operations from the start confirmed the statement of a lesnor that there positively was oil. It is unusual for a depth of over 5000 feet to be necessary in No. Orange-co., oil men point out. As for the Gaddie people, they cannot much longer claim they are waiting for the cement to thoroly set before drilling thru and bring-ing in the well they claim to have. A leading official set June 28 or thereabouts as the final date when a longer delay would not be required. "NEAR EAST IS DANGER ZONE OF WORLD," SAYS "Y" HEAD of the break-up of the most powerful system that probably the world has ever known—the social, religious, political system known as Islam. This is true from the Pillars of Hercules to the Pacific. And I am not so sure but what there has been a long-sighted strategy that is very impressive in the actions of Mustapha Kemal Pasha. He has looked back into the centuries and seen very little good has come through the Mohammedan church and he is looking at the future. The abolition of the Caliphate dealt a body blow to pan-Islam. Traditions Break Down I maintain that one of the most remarkable revolutions that the world has known in a thousand years in any part of the world is now taking place in the Near East, accompanying the religious breakup. Everywhere tradition is being overthrown. The journey from Bagdad to Damascus is now being made in 19 hours, but when I was over there last time it took two or three weeks. In northern Africa I was amazed to find thousands of miles of splendid highways that put the shame on the automobile roads of most of the states in this country. I say the Moslem world has been pulled together and made accessible. One hundred are now reading where 10 read before the war. Industrialism is crowding medievalm and through it I was conscious of Bolshevism fairly seething in many of these parts of the world." PHONE THREE BODIES IN SUBMERGED CAR CHICAGO, June 18.—The bodies of two women recovered from an abandoned and water-filled quarry near Elmhurst, a Chicago suburb today, shortly after the body of a man had been taken from the pool, were identified this afternoon as Emma Mickelborough, 38, and Dorothy Barr, 28. The man was identified as Geo. L. Townsend, a married man of Chicago. CHICAGO, June 18.—Authorities of Du Page-co., near Chicago today were confronted with a mystery when the bodies of a man and two women were recovered from an automobile submerged in a water filled quarry. One of the women was nude with the exception of a single silk undergarment. The other was fully dressed. The body of the man, found early this morning, was the first recovered. Then the body of a woman, aged about 30, dressed in black with tan silk stockings and black oxford, was raised to the surface. Searchers then brot to the surface the body of the second woman, entirely nude, with the exception of the undergarment. Search for her clothing was continued in the pool. Two men who drove to the quarry in a taxicab were taken into custody when they claimed to be relatives of the women. Police said their answers to questions were incoherent. The bodies were believed to be those of William A. Barr and his wife and Mrs. Emmia Mack, who occupied an apartment together in Chicago but the identification was not positive. Sheriff Hesterman and the coroner expressed doubt that the bodies were those of the Chicagoans. Search was started for a man who telephoned Police Chief Wolf of Elmhurst, that a flivver had pitched into the pool. KEEP MINORS FROM SLOT MACHINES Dist. Atty. A. P. Nelson was today drafting an ordinance to prohibit minors from operating slot machines, an army of which has recently found a welcome in Orange-co. barber shops, cigar stores, hot dog stands and other places. The ordinance will be submitted to the supervisors at the next meeting. A local delegation, headed by Rev. W. E. Roberts, Presbyterian pastor, asked that the ordinance be drafted and passed at once.
