U.S. Replies to Japanese Protest
WASHINGTON, June 16.—The U.S. government today replied to the Japanese protest against the exclusion act in a note handed by Secretary Hughes to Ambassador Hanibarn.
The reply was firm but couched in conciliatory terms and denied that the immigration bill violated any existing treaties between the United States and Japan.
Its contents will not be released until it is received in Tokio.
SHOOTS THREE AND COMMITS SUICIDE
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., June 16—Creeping up to the window of a cottage in which two men and their wives were playing cards early today, Wm. Shields, address unknown, fired a fusillade into the room killing one man and one woman and wounding the latter's husband.
Shields then ran 100 yards from the place and shot himself fatally, dying a few hours later.
The dead are Shields, Mrs. Estella Erban, 21, and her brother-in-law, Edward Erban, owner of the cottage.
Otto Erban, husband of the dead woman, is shot thru the right shoulder.
Shields blamed the Erbans for domestic trouble in his family which caused his wife to leave him and seek a divorce, Otto Erban said.

TODAY'S RECIPES
Savory Potatoes—Ten medium sized potatoes, one small onion, three pieces celery, two table-spoons salt, dash of pepper, milk, or soup stock. Pare potatoes and place whole in a good sized buttered baking dish (in one layer is best). Add onion and celery (minced), add seasoning. Almost cover with milk or stock. Dot with butter and bake until potatoes are well done, leaving cover off the last ten minutes.
Pumpkin Pie—One egg, two-thirds cup sugar, one cup stewed pumpkin, one tablespoon melted butter, one-quarter teaspoon ginger, one-quarter teaspoon cinnamon, one and one-half cups milk, two or three drops of vanilla, one half teaspoon salt.
Beat thoroughly the sugar, butter, spice, pumpkin and yolk of egg. Add vanilla and milk. Beat the white of egg and add to mixture. Pour into unbaked crust and bake slowly, as for a custard.
SUGGESTIONS
Cleaning Rugs—Are two simple things about cleaning rugs that every housewife ought to know: First, a few drops of chloroform or ether will remove gummy substances from the rug. Second, six parts of yellow corn meal and one salt, mixed, heated and scrubbed over a rug, will remove dirt spots and brighten the rug up like new. If the spot has been made by grease, spread the mixture over thickly and allow it to stand over night.
Shoe Rack—a common towel rack can be purchased at a 5 and 10 cent store and when fastened to the inside of a closet door near the floor, makes a good place to slip shoes. Keeping them off the floor in this way helps when sweeping the closet.
A Pretty Lunch Cloth—Of large dinner napkins that are very seldom used, take four, join them with one-inch linen insertion, then put the insertion around the outside, and crochet a little edge on it. You can make a very pretty and durable lunch cloth.
