Metcalf In every municipality officials are seated whose duties are to some extent, regulated by law. There are, however, many interests which vitally concern the development and upbuilding of every community, which are entirely beyond the control of the governing bodies. These things must be handled by organized effort, through those whose chief concern is the common good, rather than direct personal gain. Among all the organizations striving to serve along these lines, chambers of commerce are most essential. Boards of trustees or city councils are in reality, the peoples' business agents, entrusted with the expenditure of funds raised by taxation to provide public utilities. Streets must be kept in order, the public peace maintained, the laws enforced, and such regulations provided as are essential to every well ordered community. Centers of population are not the product of accident, but spring into being because of favorable environment or circumstance and their growth is stimulated when a proper balance is maintained through the development of agricultural resources, trade and commerce, and industrial activity of various kinds. Because of the many things that make life attractive in a community such as ours, our past expansion has been rapid and our future growth seems assured, but to avoid the extremes of stimulation and depression, business activities of various sorts must be attracted and it is only through the sympathetic co-operation of our city government and the chamber of commerce that the desired results may be obtained and business stability secured. These things can best be effectually accomplished through the co-ordinated efforts of city officials, chamber of commerce, and every other organized body of citizens inspired with the idea of common good. We are proud of our city, its achievements, its present prosperity and its hopes for the future. Lemon-st., Anaheim STOCKS TEND TO FURTHER ADVANCE NEW YORK, June 14.—Stocks today showed a tendency to resume the advance which had been interrupted by the profit taking of the last few days. The interests were greatly impressed by the indifference with which the news of the east-rn crude oil cut was received and adopted this calamness as a sign that the process of digesting this week's advance had been about completed and that the market might again be tested on the upward side. Oil shares, of course, in the initial dealings, were offered down by the professional element, which directed their guns against shares of companies operating in the mid-continent fields because of the price uncertainty surrounding the conditions in that territory. Selling by short operators found its was quickly into the hands of those who have been impressed by reports of increasing consumption of petroleum production and of steady reduction in surplus stocks of gasoline in various parts of the country. Conssequently, short lines previously put out were called in and a better tone developed throughout the list. Equipments, coppers, tobacco and shipping were practically unchanged. Motors, however, tended toward heaviness. Mallinson developed strength in connection with the recovery in the commodity. Such old investment issues as Great Northern Pfd., Norfolk and Western and Pennsylvania were again affected by the current case in credit conditions. Low priced rails were featured by Western Pacific common also Pfd.
