Hilgenfeld announces the following program for Sunday: "Especially I am suspicious, as a self-protecting member of the society of the sheep mind, against the highly paid propagandist of causes and movements which are located far away. We have a national weakness: It is for long distance benevolence. Unfortunately we are tremendously interested in the foreigner who dwells 4000 miles away. We think of his misery, loneliness and suffering, and we subscribe liberally to his relief. If the fortunate comes to our own civilization and lives just around the corner we pay no attention to him. We are tremendously interested in the fall of democracy in China and Bulgaria but give no thought to a possible failure of our own democracy." Mr. Child predicted the awakening of the sheep mind in America will offer a tremendous opportunity for either of the two leading political parties. Scientists in Asia will spend five years looking for a man. A lady of our acquaintance has beaten that record. We are a thoughtless people; and if we are not working our presidents to death, we are work-able by cheap printing by the busy wires and the air to receive every 24 hours a complete one day's supply of thought. And the sheep mind rejoices at this wholesaling just as the housewife rejoiced when the labor of grinding corn was replaced by kernels shot out of guns. "The time may come when there will be a suit in the supreme court to restrain a thought trust from increasing the price of commodity opinion. The time may come when human beings will call up a central bureau and say: 'What shall I think today?' "But I do not believe it. "I do not believe it because everywhere there are signs of an awakening of the sheep mind. "All this would appear deep gloom if we were not depending on the sheep mind to revolt and come into its own. The one thing which you cannot do to human beings for long is to kill the right and freedom for individual self development. "There are three kinds of sheep mind: One is the lazy sheep mind. This type does not think because it is anesthetized with lack of energy. The second is the busy mind; that of the executive which goes home tired at night, having thought only of cost figures and therefore is ready to accept whatever comes out of the greed spoon. The third is the one of hysteria. It is bounding off after a thing which for convenience is called idealism. It is the victim of drives, it follows causes and movements. It is the innate fringe."
