THE LIVING ROOM
If you prospective brides and grooms who are busy furnishing your homes can choose your own wall decorations you can see to it that if the living room is dark a light wall paper is chosen or if very bright and sunny a deeper shade is used. Avoid papers with large, decided figures. I saw a living room done in a paper that had a large bird sitting stiffly every few inches all over it, and felt that if I had to live in that room I should go wild. Plain papers or small, indistinct figures are much better and afford a better back ground for your pictures. Start with a color scheme in your furnishing so as to have everything harmonize. Get as good furniture as you can afford for it will repay your care. It is a joy to polish good woodwork. Have a few good pieces rather than a lot of cheaper ones. You can gradually buy more. What is true of furniture is true of cattains and draperies. Good materials will cost more but will retain their color and last much longer than shoddy ones. However, if you cannot buy expensive things in the first place do not discouraged. There are many inexpensive ones that may look just as pretty with a little ingenuity on the part of the bride and you can get better ones later.
THE CAPTAIN'S FEATHER
The dew is on the heather,
The moon is in the sky,
And the captain's waving feather Proclaims the hour is high When some upon their horses Shall through the battle ride,
And some with bleeding corsees Must on the heather bide.
The dust is on the heather,
The moon is in the sky,
And about the captain's feather The bolts of battle fly;
But hark what sudden wonder Breaks forth upon the gloom It is the cannon's thunder—
It is the voice of doom!

Household Hints
TODAY’S RECIPES
Cornmeal Pancakes—Scald one cup cornmeal with one cup boiling water. When cool add one cup of milk, one egg, one-half teaspoons baking powder. In case sour milk is used add one-half teaspoon baking soda.
SUGGESTIONS
Muslin Window shades—Very attractive and serviceable window shades can be made from the heaviest unbleached muslin. Cut it seven feet long and the width of your window, then cut three scallops across the bottom, the center one a little shorter, more pointed and much narrower than the other two. Bind the scallops with two inches above the scallops, stitch a piece of the muslin, wide enough to carry the stick, hem the top and tack to the old roller. When the stick is inserted at the bottom, one has a very satisfactory window shade, for when they become soiled they can be taken down and removed from the roller, washed, starched and ironed, and always be clean.
Roast Veal—In roasting veal put one-half lemon in the pan.

Billy Whiskers
BY FRANCES TREGO MONTGOMERY
You remember Billy, determined to follow his master, had just butted down the door and escaped from the general.
Hearing a ripping, tearing, smashing sound behind him, the Captain turned to look, just in time to see Billy coming through the middle panel of the door, with splitters of wood flying in all directions around him.
"That goat beats the Dutch. The General has tried to keep him in the room, and Billy has butted down the door. I never saw such devotion in an animal in my life. I shall have to have him tied up, or he will follow me in spite of all they can do.
"Billy, you naughty fellow, to beat down the door of the General's office! Don't you know you can't always follow me? And this is one of the times you must stay behind. Do you hear me? You must! For I am going a long way from here, first on horseback, then by train, then by boat, and last by walking. And if you followed me, you would give me away to the enemy This is a secret mission, and I shall disguise myself many times, but if you were always with me, what good would my disguise do? None! So I tell you you must not come unless you want to see me captured and shot." Sorry to have to leave you behind, but I must. I'll tell you how you can help me. You stay here like a passenger leaving over S. P.: Mr. and Mrs. George Pfleghardt, Pittsburg, Pa.; and Miss Louis Williams, Willows, Calif.

Alpaca is one of the smartest materials for spring tailleurs.
Tell you what, Strongheart, that goat is the kind of a friend to have. He believes in sticking around and performing the duties as a mascot. Never in my life saw such quick thought and action. You shut the door.. He knew it meant losing sight of you. So without a second's thought he up and butts the door down, going through with a second butt. Give you my word. I never saw a better job. Here, Hawkins," called the General to an orderly who was passing," take this goat over to the stable where the horses are and put him in a box stall with lots of straw and food and water in it. And see that the sides of the stall are high enough that he cannot jump over."
Hawkins saluted by touching his cap, then he walked over to Billy and took hold of his beard to lead him away.
Think of it Touched his sacred beard! Besides the indignity of being led by his bearded Never would Billy submit to anything like that. The consequence was that Hawkins had scarcely touched him when he found himself sprawling on the sidewalk at the General's feet.
The General and the Captain helped the man to his feet and he went limping off, holding both hands over his stomach where Billy had butted him.
"I think you will unless we up myself," said the Captain.
"I think you will pailows."
Now comes news of two other prospective alliances of international import. The engagement of Miss Barbara Murray of New York, to Lord Doune, heir to the Earl of Moray, head of one of the oldest and most important Scottish families, was announced almost simultaneously with the engagement of Miss Helen Marva, daughter of the former ambassador to Russia and Mrs George Marya of Washington, to John Lambertte Negre Arnold of Italy.
You must, for I am going a long way from here, first on horseback, then by train, then by boat, and last by walking. And if you followed me, you would give me away to the enemy. This is a secret mission, and I shall disguise myself many times, but if you were always with me, what good would my disguise do? None! So I tell you you must not come unless you want to see me captured and shot. Sorry to have to leave you behind, but I must. I'll tell you how you can help me. You stay here like a good goat, and protect my Sweetheart for me."
By this time the General had reached the foot of the stairs and was holding his sides with laughter instead of being angry about the broken door.
