MARY PICKFORD
MORE BEAUTIFUL
Mary Pickford is more beautiful than ever! And Mary is making a bold attempt, with measurable success, in breaking away from her old stereotyped, but delightful kid self.
She proved it last night in "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall" which opened for a four days' engagement at the United. Due in part to the play, this latest vehicle of "our Mary" is far and away superior to "Rosita."
The tempestuous, wilful kid Mary is again, but she's a woman too, and she does some acting of versatile capability, including some breathlessly exciting horseback riding. However, we doubt whether it was Mary who galloped along the top of the castle rampart, leaning a breach in it.
Marc McDermott as Sir Malcolm Vernon, Clare Eames as Queen Elizabeth, Anders Randolf as Sir George Vernon and Allan Forrest as Sir John Manners—all score success. In the scene where Malcolm Vernon and Manners fight their duel Clare Eames does some facial acting that is superb. The quivering of nostril, glint of pride in the eye, etc., tell more than many gestures possibly could. Clare Eames looks noticeably like the historic virgin queen altho she is hardly so bulky.
"Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall" is an event in Anaheim's movie world.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 30—Athletes from 33 colleges and universities from the Atlantic to the Pacific, competed in the trial events of the 48th annual track and field games of the I. C. A. A. A. A. in the Harvard stadium today.
Leland Stanford's team @ from California, Univ. of Penn. and Princeton are the favorites for the titles.
Experts believe that any team which can grasp 30 points or more will win. The entry list of 900 is a record breaking one. It is a colorful prologue to the Olympic trials to be held here in June.
Seven intercollegiate champions and an ex-champion are entered in the meet. They are Allen Helfrich, Penn. State miler; Edward Kirby, Cornell, miler; Verne Booth, Johns-Hopkins, two miler; William Comins, Yale, broad jumper; Ralph Hills, Princeton, shot putter; Bill Neufeldt, California, discus star; Ben Owen, Penn. pole vault; Tiny Harttranft, Stanford, weightsman, is the ex-champion.
In the half mile, Hellfrich will meet formidable opposition in Enck, of Penn. State and George Marstons of Georgetown.
There is some likelihood that Ed Kirby, Cornell, one mile champion, may not defend his title, but will be entered in the two mile.
Booth, of Hopkins, defending two mile star, looks as good as any in the two mile route.
Comins, looks as tho he will find it a super task to defend his laurels in the broad jump, as Cas Rose of Penna, and Boren of California have turned in better performances this year.
Harttranft will meet two tough nuts to crack in Ralph Hills of Princeton and Bud Houser of the U. S. C. in the shot put and discus.
Bowman, of Syracuse, looms as sole possible two place winner in the track events. He is entered in the 120 and the 220 low hurdles. His hopes for success in the

URGES REPEAL OF ANTI-TRUST LAW
WASHINGTON, May 30.—Repeal of the Sherman anti-trust law and government ownership of "all industry that is shown to be 50 per cent a trust" were proposed in a bill introduced in the house late today by Rep. Berger, Socialist of Wis.

Bert Colima finally won over English Billy Wells. It was their third meeting. Wells won the first encounter straight up. Their second meeting went to the Englishman on a foul and now Colima gets the third on points. They have played to packed houses every time so they must be very evenly matched. Bert's victory was a slim affair. He took the first and second rounds by just a fair margin, the third was even and the fourth was the Englishman's by a lopsided score. The fight could have been called a draw. The Englishman's cleverness has given him the shade so far.
Marty Krug is doing a lot of experimenting with his Angel band trying to work out a winning combination. So far he has not accomplished much.
He has been rushing to the aid of first one infielder, then another. Of late he has been setting in for the hard hitting Jacobs at third. Krug may be a little more finished fielder but he is not any better hitter than the kid. There are other spots in the infield that Marty could fill with better results for the team.
The Angel business manager has been in the East for several weeks trying to buy, beg, borrow or steal assistance. He is coming home with outfielder Cruise, who is a has been in the big show, which goes to prove that talent is short in the big show. The big teams are not letting any of their promising rookie talent out for more seasoning. Real money will not tempt them to part with anything that is worth while. There is a great field open to the young man with baseball ability.
Krug is thinking of trying to convert this Cruise who used to be a heavy hitter into a first base-man to take the place of the light hitting Golvin. Golvin is a won-one man of national reputation in affairs of the fist, told the whites today, that he believed Carr.
SENTIMENT FLIPS OVER TO GEORGES
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., May 30.—Public sentiment, ever a mercurial matter, today executed a right about face that would have kindled the eye of a top sergeant and lined up behind the musical comedy man, Georges Carpentier.
From a scorned outsider, pictured as elderly, infirm and slightly queerulous, the gentleman with the delicate profile and piano legs suddenly has assumed the status of a public favorite to defeat Tom Gibbons in their ten round romp here tomorrow.
It was the writer's privilege to assume a knowing air and gaze upon the great man in his final workout yesterday. He, the writer, was impressed, in spite of the fact that Georges did nothing beyond chase his shadow about the premises and skip a nimble rope.
Physically, Carpenter is poised for a noble effort, if ever a man was. His eye is as clear as the virgin spring, his skin has the glow of perfect health. He moves around with the effortless grace of a professional dancer, and seemingly is just as tireless.
Friend George's bounded high over the ropes, by no means a simple effort.
He says that he is seven pounds heavier now than he was on the unfortunate occasion referred to.
Fifteen would be more like it, according to our estimate.
It is his condition that has won over those experts who came here not to praise Georges but to bury him in an athletic grave. They now admit that any man who can hit as Georges can, backed up by a young body under an old head doesn't deserve to run for the end book.
One man of national reputation in affairs of the fist, told whites today, that he believed Carr.
SEEKING ANOTHER DEMPSEY BATTLE
Calm confidence along quiet respect for the ability opponent was expressed by the principals in the Carry Gibbons fight scheduled in morrow afternoon.
Each views the other able, but not insurmountable stacle on the path to a championship.

Pile Sufferers Get Quick Relief
Doctor discovers real remedy that actually heals Piles and absorbs them never to return.
No man or woman need suffer another hour from any pain, soreness or distress arising from Hemerrhoids or Piles now that this wonderful prescription known as MOAVA SUPPOSITORIES can be obtained for a moderate price at Gibson's Drug Stores on the money back if dissatisfied plan.
You'll be amazed to see how quickly it acts. Blessed relief often comes in an hour; even in with outfielder Cruise, who is a has been in the big show, which goes to prove that talent is short in the big show. The big teams are not letting any of their promising rookie talent out for more seasoning. Real money will not tempt them to part with anything that is worth while. Krug is thinking of trying to convert this Cruise who used to be a heavy hitter into a first baseman to take the place of the light hitting Golvin. Golvin is a wonderful fielder and his hitting this season has not been so worse. He is no Babe Ruth but he have getting his hits every now and then and Marty may not improve the situation by placing a weak fielder that can hit a little better in his place.
Salt Lake surely handed the Angel band a package when she got the Angels to give up Lindimore and Ponder for Meyers. Meyers has been of little use to the Angels and shows no signs of improvement. Lindimore has been playing great ball for the Mormans and is one of the leading swatsmen of the league. Ponder has rounded to and is becoming as effective as when he was injured a couple of years ago. These two players would look mighty good to Krug right now if they were in the Angel band.
The wrestling show in L. A. was fast and furious, the longest time required for a fall being 19 minutes. Hussane, the Turk, made the giant sailor cry enough in 14 minutes. This six foot seven inch sailor must not be much of a wrestler. He may be the pride of the navy but I doubt it. The real pride of the navy is too tough for a Turk to make give up in 14 minutes.
Young Stribling won another fight. He made his opponent Ray Neuman, look foolish all the way. This Stribling lad is the logical light heavy champ till some one proves him otherwise.

SEEKING ANOTHER DEMPSEY BATTLE
Calm confidence along with respect for the ability of his principals in the Carpentier-bons fight scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
Each view the other as a size, but not insurmountable obstacle on the path to a world championship.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., May 30.
Tomorrow comes my first chance to eliminate a real considerer for the world's champion since I went 15 rounds with Jack Dempsey almost a year ago. But I shall remove Georges Carpentier the French heavyweight, from my path to another meeting with Dempsey is my firm belief. I do not underestimate the ability of this hard fighting visitor from Europe. I know he can reach, box and that he is also one.
There is one way of drawing a comparison, however, and that is referring to the two Dempsey matches. I stayed fifteen rounds with the champion and was not armed. Carpentier was knocked in four rounds and since then he has lost to Battling Ski.
My training for this bout has been very methodical, slowly adding from ordinary condition to the point where I shall step the ring, trained to the edge ready to go a long way with a boxer.
This match tomorrow will be stepping stone for one of us in meeting with Jack Dempsey. I sure I can win from Dempsey if there is another meeting.
