LA HABRA LA HABRA, May 29.—(Spi.)— One of the most interesting events of the week was the announcement of the engagement of Miss Josephine Esservari, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dolores Esservari of La Habra Heights to Gold Lindauer, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Lindauer, also of La Habra. Asked in a card party honoring Mrs. E. C. Hallock of Wisconsin, who is the house guest of Mrs. Luther Lindauer, at the Esserveri ranch home Saturday, the guests little dreamed that such a delightful surprise was in store for them. Five hundred was played during the afternoon, with high honors going to Miss Josephine Magre of Fullerton, while Mrs. Fred Lindauer received the consolation prize. Refreshments were served in the dining room, where baskets of spring blossoms in shades of blue, pink, yellow and green, added to the attractiveness of three tables on which candle sticks also in pastel shades were arranged. At each plate was a dainty basket of candy, with a beautiful rose bud, little guessing what it contained, one guest examined here and the others followed suit, discovering the news, which came as a surprise to all. Miss Esserveri then showed her friends her beautiful bethrothal ring, and the remainder of the afternoon was devoted to chatting of the approaching event. Guests who had the pleasure of enjoying this affair were Mrs. Luther Lindauer, of La Habra; Mrs. W. T. Teeney of Whittier; Miss Nell Robertson; Miss Alberta Rothaermel; Miss Josephine Magre; Misses Mulele and Laura Yaeger; Miss Clara Stephenson; Mrs. Fred String; Mrs. Sam Oxarart all of Fullerton; Mrs. B. Albasso and Mrs. R. Albasso and PREPARES APPEAL ON NOVEL GROUND EVERETT, Wash., May 29. Found guilty of second degree murder and facing a sentence of life imprisonment, Carl Ryberg was preparing today to appeal to the supreme court on the novel ground that testimony introduced against him by the state tended to show that he was guilty of murder in the first degree instead of the lesser offense. A motion for a directed verdict of not guilty on the same basis was denied yesterday before the jury retired. Ryberg was accused of killing his grandmother-in-law, Mrs. Laura Mummy, at Seattle Heights last February and then soiling fire to her home. He is also alleged to have attacked her husband, Joshua Mummy, with an axe, inflicting injuries from which the aged man only recently recovered. It is claimed that during the height of Greece's power, the records made at the Olympiads were twice as remarkable as today. The Yellow River of China changed its course so that it now empties into the sea nearly a thousand miles from its original mouth. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Walker are the proud parents of a baby boy.
