EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester Editor and Publisher DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS God would have you remember, in bidding you praise that which you enjoy, that which exhilarates you, is His good gift to you.—James Baldwin Brown. LAW IS INEXORABLE IN NOTABLE CASE That persons of prominence and influence can be, and are, convicted of law violations, and are punished therefore, in this country, is demonstrated frequently. The sentencing of Conpressman Langley, of Kentucky, is a case in point. He was convicted, in Federal court, of conspiracy in a liquor transaction violation federal law. He is sentenced to two years in the Atlanta penitentiary. There is not so much favoritism, even in appearance, in administering justice in this country as some cynics would make appear. It is true that a person of means and of influence, employing talented lawyers, may be able—and oftentimes is able—through technicalities, to delay the processes of courts and in some cases escape punishment altogether. These cases notwithstanding, the course of justice proceeds without respect to persons. The processes should be even more effective and even-handed, when there is simplification of legal procedure, for which reformers are striving. Justice, of course, should be blind to all distinctions. No one should be so rich or so powerful, in this land, as to turn aside the course of justice or escape the penalties of violated law. And no one should be so poor-or so humble that the law would not throw around him or her its protecting arm to shield it innocent. * Sow unkindness, reap remorse. GLEANINGS FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE MEN AND MOTIVES He believed, did La Rochefoucauld, that the vices await us in the journey of life hosts with whom we must successively lodge; and he doubted whether experience would make us avoid them if we were to travel the same road a second time. La Rochefoucauld, cynic, held that men are actuated by one motive—that of personal gain, aggrandizement. Yet, he said, "There is an infinity of modes of conduct which appear ridiculous, the secret reasons of which are wise and sound. However brilliant an action may be, it ought not to pass for great when it is not the result of a great design. The world more often rewards the appearance of merit than it does merit itself. Hope, deceitful as she is, serves at least to conduct us through life in agreeable path. Indolence and timidity often keep us to our duty, while our virtue carries off all the credit of doing so. PERseverance deserves neither blame nor praise inasmuch as it is merely the duration of tastes and opinions, which we can neither give nor take away from ourselves. Our repentance is not so much regret for the evil we have done, as fear of its consequences to us. The health of the soul is no more secure than that of the body; and though we may appear free from passions, we are in quite as much danger of being carried away by them as we are of falling sick when we are in health. It belongs only to great men to have great faults. When our vices quit us we flatter ourselves with the belief that it is we who quit them. We easily forget our faults when they are known only to ourselves. POEMS THAT LIVE "LET ME ENJOY" Let me enjoy the earth no less.
