He said in part, I saw religion the other day, some people think that no one ever gets religion these days. O yes they do. I have seen many such myself and very recently, too, I saw this man myself. I didn't see God rise upon him. I wasn't there at sun-up for him. But I saw him shortly after the great event occurred and I saw the light of the Sun of Righteousness radiating his whole personality. His whole personality had undergone change. He had made radical and instantaneous changes in life-long habits. His mind was at rest and a new light was in his eyes. He had come to a new attitude towards life and the lives of others. He was, in short, "new creation." I know of no other subject upon which we think so laudely, so falsely, as we do on religion. Religion for many is associated with trouble, sickness, death, eternity. It is for them always remore from every day life, almost special for many. But real religion is an everyday, working, practical force in life. Many men and women are firm in the opinion that human nature cannot be radically changed. And they look askance upon any claim on the part of religion to re-create life. How can a man be born when he is old? They ask, like Nicodemus of old. But that nuracia happens every day of the world. Religion for many is an escape from the world. Christianity was that under medieval times. It is that today under Buddhism. And many a Christian is forever talk about being separated from the world. But unaltered by the world doesn't mean retreat from life. new standing before God; a new relationship to God and all things; to a new way of life. The fruit of the Spirit is love, gladness, peace instead of worry, long suffering, instead of empathy, kindness, goodness, meekness, self mastery. Religion is the power of God. It is the higher wisdom. It is the wider sympathy. It is life, light, bread to eat. It is reed. It grows. It leaven. It lifts. It works from within out. It is an awakening and a consecration. Look at a few illustrations. Bishop McIntyre was at an altar. He was praying "God be merciful to me a sinner." An old mother in Israel suggested that he add—"For Jesus sake". Humbly he did and religion' the grace of God flowed in upon his soul at high flide. Wesley had prayed, labored, sought. He was listening to Epistle to the Romans read by Moravik-brother. Suddenly his heart was strangely warmed. Religion had come to home. Before he had been doing religious chores. Now he had it. All at once, while he was walking thru the woods back of Cincinnati, Henry Ward Beecher had the great fact of God's love awoke up in upon his soul and he was made an evangelist of the love of God. Francis of Assisi was kneeling in the village church before the crucifix. The gospel was being read and he heard a voice calling to him to go and preach without script or purse and a new light illuminated his mind. Luther was going up Pilate's stair on his knees in penitence when all at once he saw that could not be of any particular interest to God; saw that the righteousness that a man needs comes by faith. Saul of Targus was on his way with his orthodox for the whole world. He wanted everybody to think about God the way he did, about God and everything else. If they didn't he was going to coerce. Religion for many is an escape from the world. Christianity was that under medieval times. It is that today under Buddhism. And many a Christian is forever talking about being separated from the world. But untainted by the world doesn't mean retreat from life in the world. Christianity was not intended to take us out of the world. Our Lord said that it is not escape but control and mastery. It isn't panic nor is it quarantine. It is the immunity of an inner health and strength. It is never safe to think of religion as consisting in not doing this that or the other for that makes religion a negation. But religion is positive, an affirmation. It is not subtraction but addition. It is the ordinary man, plus. It is man plus God. It is man plus faith, hope, love, patience, courage forbearance. Religion is not identical with sorrow. It is gladness made rational. It is the joy of the Lord. The religious man has come to a Resident representatives with clientele will be given preference.
