ENGLAND DRINKS
MORE LIGHT WINE
LONDON, May 26—England is drinking less "hard liquor," but is increasing its consumption of wines and beer, according to George B. Wilson, secretary of the United Kingdom Alliance, which is the British counterpart of the Anti-Saloon League. The increase in the consumption of "light" liquors is sufficiently great. Wilson points out in his annual report, to result in an increase of about 3 per cent in the consumption of absolute alcohol, despite the falling off in the use of high alcoholic content.
In 1922 England consumed 18,700,000 standard barrels of beer. Wilson estimates, while in 1923 the consumption increased to 19,495,000 barrels. The nation drank 981,000 proof gallons less spirits in 1923 than in 1922, but drank 900,000 gallons more wine.
Because of the falling off in the use of high-priced drinks the total expenditure for liquor in 1923 was less than in 1922. In 1922 the total amount spent for intoxicating liquor in Great Britain was approximately $1,165,000,000 as compared with $1,537,500,000 in 1923.
MONSTER GRIZZLY
SEEN IN SEQUOIA
THREE RIVERS, Calif., May 24—Although there is but one record of a grizzly bear being killed in this locality since 1850, Foreman James Clark, who is supervising construction of a road in Sequoia National Park, declares he saw a huge monster of the species near Moro Rock recently.
This survivor of a supposedly extinct species in California appeared feeding on a green spot below the road and in the eyes of Clark and his men assumed the proportions of a buffalo. Clark, who has lived in Yellowstone Park declares the bear was the largest he had ever seen. It appeared at the camp "dump" later in the evening and drove away several brown bears, which have been in the habit of feeding from the reef.
This bear also was observed by Chief Park Ranger Guy Hopping last year, who reported that a monster animal was roaming the forest.
Judge Walter Fry, park naturalist, says the only grizzly to fall victor to a hunter was one which Joe Palmer, a prospector, killed on the old Blossom ranch in this vicinity in 1855.

WILL GOLF BECOME NATIONAL PASTIME?
SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 — It is only a matter of time until golf will be America's national game.
Golf interest is growing by leaps and new clubs are dotting the countryside everywhere.
California, where all-year golf makes a heaven for the fiends, leads the country in the number of links per capita and California's courses are becoming more thickly populated every month, showing the increasing demand for more playing space.
Whether golf will ever become chief in the interest of American sport fans is doubtful. More persons may engage in actual playing of golf than in any other sport within a very few years, but if the heights in popular interest now attained by the lords of baseball are ever reached by a golf champion is a question that at this time has a decided negative tinge.
Take Babe Ruth!
All America knows him. Every schoolboy follows his doings from April until October. And at the schoolboy's elbow is the man of business.
Then there's Gene Sarazen, Arthur Havers, Chick Evans. The names of these leading golfers are known to a small minority in contrast to the popularity of a Ruth, a Slater or a Bert Ellison.
Aside from popular interest, however, golf is taking a hold in many communities never attained by any other sport.
This is due to the clubhouse. Here is found headquarters of much of the community life. The importance of the game as a social factor is unbounded. Sports of all kinds have been known for years as the makers of life-long friendships. In sports, men find themselves "akin" more than anywhere.
Golf, in this respect, as a builder of friendship and closer community relations already stands supreme in American sports.

PREFER SUICIDE TO SCHOOL LIFE
SACRAMENTO, May 26 — Rather than attend school, Takeo Takamoto, 14-year-old Japanese school boy, committed suicide, according to the testimony of Deputy Sheriff M. V. Robbins, who said that the youth just before he died of a bullet wound in the abdomen, told him that his father had ordered him to go to school.
The youth was found in a field with a rifle by his side and blood flowing from a severe wound in the abdomen. Medical aid was summoned but death was inevitable. Takamoto's last words were that he secured the rifle and shot himself, following reprimand by his father for not attending school.

WOOD SPENDING AT MONTE CARL
LONDON, May 26—Lieutenant Ost, son of Major-George Leonard Wood, is giving the visitors at Monte Carlo a thrill, according to a dispatch to the Dalton Express.
The story asserts that Lieutenant Wood, who recently resigned from the United States army, spending lavishly the money he made in Wall Street, Lieutenant Wood, the dispatch declares, came to Monte Carlo with a Chinese servant, who acted as a bodyguard and accompanied him wherever he went. The Chinese always carried a large bag filled with 1000-franc notes, and whenever Lieutenant Wood desired to spend money which was frequently, the servant would open the bag and produce the cash required.
The Southern California International Revenue District embraces only 10 of the 58 counties in the state, led every state west of the Mississippi in receipts from income taxes for the first quarter of 1924 with a total of $16,756,000.

EXPECT GERMAN CABINE 1 TO QUIT
BERLIN, May 26.—Chancellor Marx's cabinet is expected to resign tonight on the eve of the assembling of the reichstag to consider the Dawes reparations report.
Resignation of the Marx ministry has been expected for a long time. It is understood that it was held up only by the failure of the Borgeolse parties to form a coalition strong enough to support any new cabinet that accepted the Dawes plan.
Two main possibilities arising from the resignation of the present cabinet will be:
1. President Ebert might charge Herr Hergt, leader of the German nationalists (the strongest party) with the task of forming a new government.
2. President Ebert might ask Chancellor Marx to remain and develop a program for the new reichstag either to approve or reject.
Tomorrow's meeting will be the first plenary session of the new reichstag. If the Dawes plan is approved the reichstag will be called upon to amend the constitution so that the plan can be put into execution.
The Marx government already has notified the inter-allied reparations commission at Paris of its acceptance of the Dawes plan, but the reichstag has not yet had its say.
STRENUOUS DRIVE AGAINST FIRES
SACHAMENTO, May 26.—Following a series of fires in northern California during the past week, several of which were traceable to carelessness, State Forester M. B. Pratt today issued a statement today describing persons who allow fires to escape or spread through carelessness are criminals and should be accorded the same treatment as criminals."
"Fire hazard this summer is the most serious in the history of the state," said Pratt, "and drastic measures must be taken to reduce to a minimum man-caused conflagrations. Our fire fighting organization will be kept busy suppressing fires resulting from natural causes and all other blazes will add to this."
