The foreign buyer said that Mexico excelled in tropical products but the vegetables and fruits of the temperate and semi-tropical zones did not grow well below the border. Especially strong is the demand for celery, he declared. Celery will grow in his native land but the quality is so poor that it is refused by the better class of trade, he said. FIGHT GASOLINE TAX INCREASE SACRAMENTO, May 24.—It is predicted that the proposal to increase the state gasoline tax from two to three cents per gallon; advocated by the administration, will give rise to a bitter fight during the fall legislative session. W. H. Marsh, chief of the Motor Vehicle Dept., and an appointee of Governor Richardson, favors the measure. Municipalities thrust the state add to the complexity of the situation by claiming a share in the receipts. Draymen and motor carriers are lining up in opposition to the tax and the United Chambers of Commerce of the Sacramento valley today refused to indorse the proposed increase. DEZELL OUTLINES OF CITRUS CHANGE A recent circular to all change shippers by General Manager K. G. Dezell, of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, outlining the changes that have come about in the conditions surrounding distribution of our orange crop with the increased production Florida and of California Valencia and the necessity of ships in both states recognizing changed conditions in their plans for the movement of their crops in different varieties. He calls attention to the peril in 1923 at about this time when the market was broken by great quantities of fruit being warded, when the California Nels and Florida Valencias were winding up and California Valencias starting and the need careful handling of the movement every year at the time of the terminating of these varieties. "We may conclude," he continued, "that each grower or ship or the shippers collectively owe variety or in a district or state are going to do that thing which will bring the greatest return them. This is as it should be the problem is to find the course of action that will bring about in the long run for each of all." Starting at the beginning our season, Florida may be expected to ship her Parson Brownson seen in the Fall as they condition to compete with our Vendices, but should restrict movement to quantities that would not give a total supply beyond demand at that time at a reasonable price, realizing that our Vendices on hand must go to November. The early Navel district generally are waiting until the fruit tests 8 to 1, which must win up. The early navel districts, less their production increases over adversely, can move their fruits best condition and with best saults before the first of the year. Otherwise they go into the mountains with Florida and our other navel districts in position to supply all the markets with gourmet fruit." for Appointment call Mr. Clay, 212 W.
