NEW HIGH SALES MARK FOR FORD CO. Sid McGraw just received the following from Los Angeles: "The Los Angeles Branch of the Ford Motor Co. has received word from Detroit to the effect that Ford miles for 1924 have already passed three-quarters of a million. Car and truck deliveries alone show an increase of 102,158 over 1922. The present month opened with a bigger demand for Ford products than shown any month this year. Ford retail sales in the United States during the first 10 days of May averaged 8285 daily, which exceeded the last 10-day period of the record-breaking sales month of April. This clearly indicates a continued upward trend of the market." "Figures just compiled show a total of 757,023 Ford units having been retained to customers from January 1 up to and including May 10. Of this number, Ford car and truck deliveries alone show a gain of 102,158 over the same period a year ago." "With the increase attained, accompanied by the present outlook for business, the company anticipates a new high sales figure this month." PARA-BELL BALLOONS SOON The Para-Bell tire, always of the balloon soft in that low air pressure, was possible without injury, will be in the real balloon form next month, although the standard tire still will be available. Roy Mendoza of the Reliable Tire Co. announces. Mendoza has driven his own standard Para-Bells 14,000 miles at pressure of 22 to 25 pounds, and these tires still are good for an equal distance, he declares. The makers have been working to improve the Para-Bell balloon for some time past. The time payment system is working out splendidly, many purchasers taking tires on install- KEYS OF CITY GIVEN COOPER INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 24 — Earl Cooper, in his new Studebaker special, is giving the railbirds at the Speedway a thrill these days in the early speed trials for the annual international 500-mile race, May 30. Cracking off five laps at an average speed of 100.3 miles an hour in his first tryout, Cooper demonstrated what a clean pair of heels the little Studebaker special has, when Mayor Lew Shank headed a delegation welcoming the veteran driver. This was the first time, in recent years, that Indianapolis has given a municipal reception to an arriving Speedway contestant. The occasion was in honor of Studebaker. For it is the first time that the Studebaker Corporation's house flag will flutter from the track pits, when the $1 speed busses scuttle across the line at 10 o'clock on the morning of the great annual gasoline derby. "The city is yours," said Mayor Shank, when he officially welcomed Cooper. "From all indications this 1924 race will eclipse them all. Every day I am receiving word that motor caravans are getting out from every corner of the country to arrive in Indianapolis in time for the race. I hope you win. We have to keep the first prize in Indiana." The mayor was alluding to the fact that Studebaker for 72 years has been located in Indiana. Impacts to move his used car Oakland Victory Acclaimed The Oakland sedan carried off the premier honors in the closed car class as well as winning the silver mug for the best economical performance in its price class, says Harry L. Turton, distributor. This was Driver E. L. Peterson's first economy effort and he piloted his mount in splendid style as the records show. The car averaged 18.18 miles on a gallon of gasoline for the hard 400-mile trip and used but one pint of oil, a 19 IN MONTH KILLED IN L. A. An idea of the toll of human life constantly being exacted by motor vehicles in all parts of the country can be had from the report of fatal accidents in Los Angeles-co during April. These are compiled from transcriptions of coroner's inquests by the public safety department of the A. C. of S. C. The record is an impressive lesson for care in driving. Of the total deaths from accidental causes in the county, 48 were traced to motor vehicles. There were 100 in all, an increase of 32 over the corresponding month last year. The car averaged 18.18 miles on a gallon of gasoline for the hard 400-mile trip and used but one pint of oil, a very remarkable showing for a closed car and one that few open cars ever equal. Oakland's four successive Grand Sweepstakes victories and one Closed Car Sweepstakes victory out of five starts in the last three years in Southern Calimornia economy runs is a record of which every Oakland enthusiast can well be proud. LIGHTS RIGHT ON DODGE CARS Dodge cars come with the regulation headlights, says Charley Mann, local distributor, and the lamps, like everything else on the car, are substantially built and do not get out of adjustment easily. Service records continue to multiply. Any number of Dodge owners in Anaheim and vicinity are getting 30,000 miles with their tires, and gas and oil mileages often equal to that of much smaller cars. The factory output now is 1000 cars per day, since the recent fully equipped addition to the plant at Detroit was completed. Sales in May, both here and elsewhere, are excellent. OVERLAND OWNERS IN TEST RUN HERE Anaheim is going to have an economy run all its own. W. R. Schanhals, Overland and Willys-Knight distributor, has planned one from May 26 to June 5, open to any driver of an Overland. The prizes will be two—a new tire, tube and cover and a Boyce motormeter. The start will be from the big garage at Olive and E. Center streets. A two quart jar of gas will be placed at the windshield and connected with the carburetor. The clutch must be engaged at all times, except within fifty feet of the point where a stop is to be made, and the driver must start from low gear, change to intermediate and then to high gear. country can be bad from the report of fatal accidents in Los Angeles-co during April. Of the total deaths from accidental causes in the county, 48 were traced to motor vehicles. There were 100 in all, an increase of 32 over the corresponding month last year. Collisions between motor vehicles and pedestrians continued to hold first place among the fatalities. There were 19 of the 48 deaths attributable to this cause, and increase of 11 deaths in this classification over the corresponding month last year. Cutting in ahead of other cars also is providing a prolific cause of loss of life. There were 10 fatalities under this heading. Five children lost their lives while playing in the street, and five persons were killed crossing the street not at cross walks. Incompetent handling of cars caused eight deaths, and two more fatalities resulted through driving to the left of a street car. Only one of the ftl accidents was attributable to weather conditions. LOW PRESSURES DON'T HURT AJAX Daniels & Williams, local distributors of Ajax and Brunswick tires, report selling a number of Ajax balloon type tires. Owing to the fact that Ajax tires are naturally of the balloon type—that is, can stand a much lower air pressure without injury than other makes of tires—the trade in rfstandard Ajax tires is good. The company has made out a chart showing the pressures at which these standard tires may safely be used. It took the United States 41 a traveling library of 2,000,000 volumes.* TAGGART'S DEPENDABLE USED CARS '23 Chev. Touring.....$400 '23 Chev. Coupe .....550 '23 Chev. Sedan.....700 '22 Chev. POLICE REQUIRE FAST CAR: CROMER Police departments require a car which can be driven, if necessary, at high speed and stand up under strain, said C. F. Cromer, local branch manager of Dale & Co., in commenting on the purchase of a Reo by the city for the use of City Marshal Bert Moody and his men. Cromer has just received one of the new Reo sedans, which is the finest piece of work the company has ever turned out. This car, equipped with full size balloon tires, front and rear bumpers, disc wheels all around, heater, motorometer and the dozen and one other things that intangibly make for comfort, is as fine in mechanism as it is in quality of general workmanship.
