DEMPSEY WILL FIGHT IN SEPT.
LOS ANGELES, May 20.—Jack Dempsey, king of the heavy-weight boxing division of the world, will definitely show his stuff next September in New York or New Jersey in a match to be staged by Tex Rickard and Jack Kearns. Dempsey's manager, and his opponent will be either Willis, Firpo or Gibbons.
Kearns put his official O. K. on such an arrangement today.
"In two weeks I'll be headed east," Kearns said, "with the first three of a series of films Dempsey has made here and upon arriving in Gotham will get busy on the September fight for Dempsey."
"Dempsey will take on Willis, Firpo or Gibbons. That much is certain and the odds seem to favor Gibbons as the next man to get a crack at Dempsey's crown. If Gibbons knocks Carpentier over at Michigan City May 31, there will be a popular demand for Gibbons to meet the champion and it will be a demand that we will..."
In two weeks I'll be needed east. Kearns said, "with the first three of a series of films Dempsey has made here and upon arriving in Gotham will get busy on the September fight for Dempsey.

If Gibbons knocks Carpentier over at Michigan City May 31, there will be a popular demand for Gibbons to meet the champion and it will be a demand that we will have to heed. The showing Gibbons made at Shelby, Mont., plus a win over Carpenter would entitle him to a return match with Dempsey.
"The Dempsey defeated Firpo in the Polo Grounds fight, the South American is still a good card and we will try to line up another engagement with him."
"A lot of people think Wills is entitled to a chance, too, and we are willing to give it to him if such a bout can be made a go.
"This much is certain. Dempsey will fight next September and the other man in the ring will be Wills, Firpo or Gibbons."
The part Kearns will take in promoting the fight will be the handling of advertising. While Rickard will officially promote the battle Kearns said he would see that it is put before the public as no other fight has ever been.

SARGUM PROUTINGS
Western track and field tryouts for the Olympic games speak well for the western athlete. World's records have been equaled and broken and in all events the records have been in danger. Saturday at Palo Alto in a great meet Brick Mueller won the honors for individual point gathering and Glen Hartranft was second. Mueller, the renowned football star, is going to be heard from when the athletes of the world meet. Brick is one of the greatest all around athletes of all time. Hartranft, the Pullerton lad, is a wonder weight man. He took first place in the shot put and discus throw at Palo Alto. He is almost sure of a berth on the Olympic team.
Next Saturday will see the So. Calif. Olympic tryouts at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Charlie Paddock will run. That should be inducement enough to pack the big place. Paddock is the marvel of the age. He is not built like a runner, does not run like a runner, but, man, how he covers the ground. He is the fastest human on legs just at present.
Jack Dempsey will be an added attraction to help swell the Olympic funds, Jack will step about in the squared inclosure for the edification of the fistic fan. There are thousands who would pay $2 just for the privilege of seeing Jack in action as well as all of the southland's best athletes. Some more world records are liable to be smashed. Better take a couple of iron men to do your bit toward the Olympic fund and enjoy a great Saturday afternoon.
Salt Lake batsmen still maintain a terrific clip. The six leading home run swatters of the Coast league are Salt Lake swatters. Manager Duffy Lewis leads with 16, Frederick is next with 13; then follow Lazerre with 10, Sheehan B. Vitt and Linde-Blade.
FLOOD TIDE OF BOXING PASSED
NEW YORK, May 20—It has become more and more evident in recent weeks that the flood tide of boxing in New York has passed its peak and that the ebb toward different shows and comparatively small purses has set in.
At this time last year, Willard, Firpo and Johnson had appeared in the milk fund shop; Eugene Crigui and Jimny Wilde were coming here to engage in international championship bouts. Firpo the Purious was being built up toward the great enterprise and Leonard and Tendler were making ready to engage in their second bout for the light weight title.
Contrast that period of vast activity with the supine present, represented by the following facts, to wit:
There isn't a fight of even ordinary moment on the fire with the exception of the proposed Dempsey-Wills affair and not a few authorities sincerely believe this bout will never see the light of day.
The condition is generally traceable to a new policy of retrenchment on the part of the promoters, Rickard included. They are no longer offering fabulous pursues for the simple and sufficient reason that they know the money is no longer there. Boxing fans have turned their backs upon shows where high prices prevail unless the attraction is altogether worthy of their dollars.
They would cheerfully pay $25 to see Dempsey maul Wills or vice versa; they would rise to another Dempsey-Firpo frolic in a manner befitting the occasion. But there isn't another attraction in or out of the book that would prompt the boys to pay heavily, if at all.
The field of cash customers has been bleed white and every one seems to see it with the possible exception of the boxers themselves. They are all waiting on mental tiptoe for the pleasant clink of cool coins, and in consequence Rufus McGoufus is dally-tone dictated cey to guard the honor American home or are that to be laughed at by worn this?' eried Farr during course of his summing finger at
GLORIA SWANSON AT CALIFORNIA
Tonight is "Guest Night" California theatre, so use coupon you have. Glorious Swanson will feature the play in her latest and greatest "A Society Scandal," said even better than "The Hut Bird."
Never in the memory of York society has one of its bers had her reputation as so frankly and vehemently that of Marjorie Colbert's day afternoon by Daniel Lortney for Hector Colbert, suing the very pretty and lovely indiscreet Marjorie vorece. Never have even one scandal publications, exist principally for those of blackmailing society, ever intimate the, to say the lee conventional actions of Farr publicly accused Mertin in summing up for the tiff, her husband. The expected to go to the jury row morning.
"Are the laws dictated cey to guard the honor American home or are that to be laughed at by worn this?" eried Farr during course of his summing finger at

Salt Lake batsmen still maintain a terrific clip. The six leading home run swatters of the Coast league are Salt Lake swatlers. Manager Duffy Lewis leads with 16, Frederick is next with 13; then follow Lazerre with 10, Sheehan 8, Vitt 7 and Lindemore 7.
No wonder the other Const teams dread that Salt Lake wrecking crew. Lewis and Frederick top the league in batting. If the Mormona' pitching holds up, those Mormon swatsmiths will batter their way into a pennant.
The last two weeks have been disastrous for the Vernon Tigers. They have won but four games out of 14. They dropped from a tie for first place to fourth. Red Killifier's Indians are in third place and the swatting Mormons in second. The Seals have a comfortable lead, but are liable to have that lead whittled down considerably this week as they battle the stinging Bees on the Mormon lot. The Bess had a much calser time in taking 5 out of 7 from the Tigers than did the Seals so it looks as if the Seals are in for a tough week.
The Angels braced a wee hit last week and battled the Ducks to a 3 to 3 tie. Pain and Ramsey turned in a nice game each last week, which helps the appearance of the Angel pitching staff quite a bit. Durst, Angel center fielder, has found himself and has been playing good ball lately.
Ray Jacobs, the Angels' youthful third baseman, is causing the big league scouts to take notice. Jacobs has been fielding far above expectations and his hitting has been the most consistant of the Angel band.
There will be another real scratch'um, goug'um wrestling show at the Philharmonic Auditorium Wednesday evening. Anderson and Mulligan are good wrestlers. Miller threw Mulligan at Fullerton some weeks ago. He is a good clean wrestler. Mulligan and Anderson will open the show, and their meeting may be called a wrestling match. The next event will be between Constanorus, the Spaniard, and Koak, the Armenian. Judging from the Spaniard's reputation and the Armenian's exhibition at Fullerton a few weeks ago their meeting should satisfy the most blood thirsty. Palmini, a giant Italian, wrestles Hussane, the Turk, in the main event. This should be another hair-pulling, ear-twisting event to set the garlic-eating field.
The field of cash customers has been bleed white and every one seems to see: with the possible exception of the boxers themselves. They are all waiting on mental ticte for the pleasant clink of cool coins, and in consequence, Rufus McGoofus is dallying with Kid Kake-eater in so-called star bouts.
What, for example, has become of the flyweight championship joust that was to bring together Pancho Villa and Frankie Genaro. Pancho's manager declined to be a party to an indoor meeting on the theory that the great outdoors is a fine place for cash customers. He is waiting to be seduced by the big money and probably will continue to do so indefinitely, unless he alters his estimate of values.
They are talking of matching Benny Leonard and Mickey Walker for the welterweight title. Talk was never expensive. Leonard has publicly stated that he wants $200,000 for his little end; Walker, no doubt, has similar ideas. That being the case, any promoter who attempted to put on a Leonard-Walker match would find himself holding a hollow bag.
Wills and Firpo would have made another first class attraction—within reason. But Firpo held out for $250,000. Therefore Rickard held out his empty hand.
We presume, however, that this kind of malarky is to be expected from certain quarters. The turn of the tide often catches the fool-hardy swimmer going the wrong way.

Los Angeles offers a great opportunity for the promotion of wrestling bouts, but all attempts to put the game over big have failed so far. A promoter who would put over high-class wrestling shows in Los Angeles and establish a reputation for such would make a world of money, but this rough stuff with Greeks and Armenians and whatnots pulling hair and twisting noses will never go over with the Angel City. This punk stuff has caused the newspapers to fight wrestling and give the game a black eye. The wrestlers and their promoters are to blame.

principally for the purpose of blackmailing society, ever dared eliminate the, to say the least, unventional actions of which Mr. Colbert publicly accused Mrs. Colbert in summing up for the plain-faced husband. The case is expected to go to the jury tomorrow morning.
"Are the laws dictated by necessity to guard the honor of the American home or are they made be laughed at by women like us?" cried Farr during the course of his summing up, pointing an accusing finger at Marjorie Colbert, who looked extremely lovely in chic gowns and furs and wearing the famous Colbert jewels. However, she was visibly annoyed and somewhat worried as Mr. Colbert's attack grew in violence, and at one moment her mask of difference dropped abruptly and she looked ready to spring up and tear the lawyer to pieces.
But why tell you the whole story and spoil it for you? If you really wish to know how Marjorie Colbert got into this terrible pre-cament and the amazing thing that happened after the jury's verdict, come and see the production. Added to this great feature is Jack Sennett's latest laugh riot, Down to the Sea in Shoes," a clever comedy that would make a wooden Indian laugh.
