SCHOONER WILL BE FLOATED TODAY REEDSPORT, Ore., May 17.—The steam schooner Admiral Nicholson, one of the two freighters which went aground on the south split here yesterday, was expected to be floated this morning at high tide. Captain Enricson and the crew remained aboard the Admiral Nicholson throught the night during a heavy sea and strong wind. The schooner was not hard ground, owing to the light cargo it carried. The schooner G. C. Lindauer is a total wreck. She broke up last night during the battering of the waves, while fast aground on the split. A large cargo of lumber, assigned to San Francisco, was lost. The crew was taken off in a preaches Buoy and small boats yesterday. Exact cause of each of the unusual accidents was still somewhat of a mystery today. The Lindauer was first to go around. She left Reedport about 11:30 a.m. yesterday and when in the channel was seen to swerve, turn broadside and land on the Umpqua bar. The steering gear was believed to have failed to function properly. The Lindauer is of the A. F. Mihoney Steamship Co. of San Francisco. The Admiral Nicholson, owned by the West Coast Navigation Co. of Portland, went aground two hours after the Lindauer. The Nicholson, steaming into Reedport, was caught in the tide and heavy seas and grounded on the bar. She was seen to slow down and apparently attempt to back up but was too late. NEW TODAY PLANE ENGINEER PREFERS FRANKLIN Many folks have no doubt wondered just what kind of a car Donald W. Douglas, designer and builder of the famed round-the-world planes, drives. The answer is—a 1924 Franklin sedan. The fact that Douglas, after he and his wife had taken a ride in the air-cooled car, signed on the dotted line is undoubtedly a tribute to the principles of light weight and comfort as exemplified in the Franklin. Douglas purchased his sedan in November, 1923, when the '24 Franklinins were first brought out, Chas. J. Carr, Franklin dealer at Ocean Park, being the fortunate party to add such a distinguished engineer to the roster of Franklin owners. The fact that the Franklin is the outstanding success in the air-cooled field of motor cars was quite a factor in determining his choice; for Douglas is very much interested in the progress of air-coooling, both for airplanes and motor cars. Other engineering features, such as the case-hardened, seven-bearing crankshaft with two flywheels and the duralumin connecting rods held a particular appeal for him, but after all the comfort and roadability features of the Franklin were the deciding factors. Douglas is president of the Douglas Aircraft Co. of Santa Monica, which has been featured in the newspapers of the country recently due to the building of the round-the-world planes known as the "Douglas World Cruisers." However, previous to organizing his own company, he was chief designer for the Glenn Martin Co. USED AUTOS HARRY D. We can fulfill the needs of the most particular and our prices have been materially reduced. See them drive them, compare them, and we know you will buy from us. COMMUNISM ON WAYNE IN BRIRTISH ISLES, SAYS EXPARLIAMENT MEMBER That the new British Labor Party is more interested in keeping the prince on his horse than in overthrowing the king," is the cryptic clew of the British situation, expressed by Phillip W. Wilson, former member of the British parliament and now in the U.S. He emphasizes the fact that communism is on the wane in the British Isles. "The genesis of the Labor Party," said Wilson recently, in New York; "was in the social and religious movements after the World War and the two principal acts of the Labor Party have been the cancellation of plans for the creation of the Singapore naval base and the recognition of Russia. England is fortunate to have as head of the Labor Party Ramsey MacDonald, whose sympathy for the Dutch in South Africa is a distinct benefit." In tracing the history of the Labor Party, Wilson said it dated back 40 years; and as significant of the social revolution now under way in England, he cited the appointment of James Brown, miner, as Lord High Commissioner of Scotland. The victory of the Labor Party, he explained, was due largely to the fact that the British had come to look upon the coalition government as "organized hypogrym" and one of the greatest benefits to accrue from the victory would be the sobering influence that responsibility would have upon Labor. He said that the unprecedented role now played by the Labor Party was an example of temporary opportunity, but he ridiculed a surrender to Bolshevism. At this election, he said, there were nine candidates for Parliament who were classed as Communists and not one was returned a victor. HARRY D. RILEY Studebaker Dealer 151 So.
