FORD'VEHICLE SALES, RECORD DETROIT, Mich. May 17.—Retail sales of Ford cars and trucks in the United States rose to 211,410 during April, a substantial increase over the record-breaking deliveries of March, the Ford Motor Co. announced here today. At the same time, it was stated that sales of Ford tractors, which have been steadily increasing since the first of the year, exceeded 12,000 in April. Further, in the high-priced car field, sales of Lincoln cars, which are produced by a division of the company, reached a new monthly record with a total of 762 retail deliveries. During the first four months of the present year, Lincoln sales showed an increase of approximately 55 per cent over the same period a year ago, the company says. While the sales figures of the company graphically illustrate the constantly growing popularity of all Ford products, they likewise present an optimistic business outlook. A review of the sales records shows that for two years retail deliveries of Ford cars and trucks in the United States have exceeded 100,000 a month, the company says, while for nine of the months during the past year sales were well over the 150,000 mark, and the big demand during March and April this year carried sales for each of those months considerably over 200,000. Despite late spring weather in many sections, the demand for Fordson tractors for agricultural use continues to grow, while a noticeable increase in the percentage of Fordsons going into industrial use is accepted as reflecting generally prosperous conditions. FULLERTON ROTARY CLUB TRIMS LOCALS YORBA LINDA, May 17—(Spl) The Yorba Linda Woman's Club had a very interesting meeting on Tuesday when the regular meeting was held in the club rooms. Quigley occupied the president's chair in the absence of Mrs. Acker who has been ill. Plans were completed for the C. of C. dinner to be held the latter part of the month. Mrs. B. M. Selover was appointed as delegate to the state convention to be held in Pasadena the twenty-third and twenty-fourth with Miss Martha Vernon as alternate. The serving of ice cream cones to the children concluded an interesting children's program. Several ladies became new members. These included Mrs. Chas. Goodrich T & Rubber Co. and released Daniels & Williams, Brunswick and Ajax distributors: Not when the car is in motion but when standing still the turning effort is greater, but not any serious extent. Wheels equped with balloon tires follow road with less effort at the steering wheel than high pressure tires. How about wheel shimming? Shimmy rarely occurs under speed of 60 miles per hour; this condition becomes manifest high speeds; it can generally be remedied by balancing the wheels assembly and making other minor adjustments. Is there really any advantage in equipping small cars with balloon tires? Balloon tires are really advantageous on small cars; more than large cars, as they give smaller car the riding qualities a much heavier car with a larger wheel base. Should chains be used in balloon tires? With balloon tires there is tendency to skid sidewise in applying the brakes or in round corners. On snow and ice any is likely to slip without chains. CUSTODY GRANTED TO GRANDMOTHER The two little children Floyd E. Hatch, ill treatment whom brought about the condition of their father and the story book stepmother, M Bertha Phares, on a charge contributing to the delinquency minors, were to be established. FULLERTON ROTARY CLUB TRIMS LOCALS Fullerton Rotarians trimmed local clubmen in a baseball game 5 to 3 on the city park diamond. "Doe" Barnes brought in a run much to his sorrow, it was said. Pay Lewis knocked a three-bagger when "Doe" was on first, and he had to make tracks to get home before the ball got there. He did, and it took Harry D. Riley several minutes to relieve the furniture man. Hitchcock made the alteration. Carl Leonard started to pitch and stumbled thru two impressions when he was relieved by Ed Schneider starring in the lineup were Berger, Shpke, McFadden, Eicholtz, Elley, Baines, Hitchcock, Lewis and Leonard. L Selover of Garden Grove Yorba Linda visitor Thurs- RACING MODEL REAL OAKLAND When Ira Vail rolls out into the Indianapolis track for the big race Memorial Day he will line up with a contingent of high-speed buggies, many of which are the product of Harry Miller, the well-known Los Angeles motor and racing car builder. There is a far deeper significance to the fact that Miller cars are the most feared of racing cars today, than the fact that they are built in Los Angeles," says Harry L. Turton, Anaheim Oakland dealer. "At first glance Ira Vail's car bears a family resemblance to the Oakland sport model. Both are finished in the Oakland True Blue Duco paint, which has made such a hit the country over. Both cars are equipped with four-wheel brakes for safety and positive control at all speeds. "While these two features are apparent at a glance, there are many more important points in construction that are parallel. Oakland has always advocated the small bore long stroke motor, and until very recently it had the smallest cubic displacement six-cylinder motor used in standard construction. Racing cars have constantly been reduced in size and at the same time increased their speed and endurance. Present day racers travel 500 miles without a stop at more than 100 miles an hour as against the frequent stops made in past races in which the time was far slower. "小aller motors mean smaller and lighter reclocating parts and this in turn reduces motor strains, bearing troubles, and faster time. The Oakland has been able to give a good account of itself in speed trials and hill climbs. A stock model coupe Oakland still holds the record to San Diego from Los Angeles, recling off this stretch in 2 hours and 52 minutes." "WATCH FOR THE DATE" Greatest Bargain in Suits, Clothes and Haberdashery Grow Smaller TAFT CONSIDERS PARDON POWERS WASHINGTON, May 17—The controversial question of whether a president of the United States has unlimited power to pardon law offenders, is to be threshed out in the U. S. supreme court, the chief justice of which is himself, a former president. This was virtually assured today when it became known that Attorney General Harian P. Stone will uphold the power of the president to pardon Phillip Grossman, Chicago saloonkeeper, sentenced for contempt of federal court, against the order of Federal Judges Carpenter and Wilkerson, denying the power of the executive to override the courts in contempt cases. Department of justice officials declared today the constitution reposes in the president power to pardon all offenses against the government except treason. Attorney General Stone was busy today looking up precedents and studying the whole matter. His predecessors in office have invariably held that the president possesses power to pardon contempt cases, the last instance being Atty. Gen. Daugherty in the case of Comptroller Charles L. Craig of New York, who was saved from a 60-day sentence for contempt by President Coolidge. SENATORS CHEW GUM TO INSPIRE HEAVY THINKING WASHINGTON, May 17—Pernickety persons who claim the chewing of gum is fit only for the vulgar and uneducated will find no support for their contentions in the United States. Two of the brainiest and most refined men in the Senate—Senators Wadsworth Rep., of New York, and King, Dem., of Utah, are confirmed gum chewers. When either has a particularly baffling problem on his desk in the chamber he usually is seen thinking "Beware of buying unknown batteries," says Robert Jensen, Prest-O-Lite battery distributor. Mr. Jensen says: "When a manufacturer succeeds in producing a high quality product that fulfills a demand of the consumer there are always small people trying to counterfeit the product. Some of them even go so far as to put the name or a similarly sounding name on the counterfeit and sell it as the original make. "This may be a sinister form of flattery, but it means a loss to the purchaser. The man who really suffers is the man who buys it. The manufacturer puts out such a quantity of his own make that he will not feel the loss of the sale of which this counterfeit robs him. "The only sure place to buy a battery is from a recognized dealer. This dealer will give you service and expert advice which will keep your battery in service as long as it is economical. By all means buy an advertised battery whether it be a Prest-O-Lite or any other well-known one. By doing this you buy a battery of high quality and you assure yourself of dependable service." In every case where a man puts up a counterfelt battery and proceeds to sell it under a nationally advertised name he will be prosecuted. The greatest trouble, however, comes from the no-name battery which is sold to the customer as the good product. In this case the buyer must watch out himself and examine it. If the name Prest-O-Lite (or other nationally known name) definitely appears on the battery itself, the buyer can be sure that he is getting the right thing. "My advice is—get your battery from a recognized dealer. He will give you the best you can buy, and he will give you expert advice and service." POLICE RIDE IN NEW REO AUTO Hey, boy!
