WOMEN of the Prebyterian church were highly entertained yesterday when women from different districts told of the wonderful Americanization work which is being done for our neighbors. Miss Clement Allec talked of her work among the more than 700 Mexicans in Placentia and Mrs. Roy, who teaches the Mexican children in the daytime, holds eight classes for men of the Bastanchury Punch. Miss Eleanor Hazen in charge of the LaHabra district, told of her activities and work, and adding interest, showed a beautiful display of embroidery, drawn and wood carving work and excellent paintings by the Mexicans of that locality.
Miss Tracey, a teacher in Anaheim school, spoke forly of the needs of these children in the sugar factory district and made a strong plea for a friendly house, properly furnished and supervised, where they may have recreation and social gatherings.

The final general meeting of the Celebrates Birthday
Having arrived at his sixteenth birthday anniversary yesterday, Lyle Pember, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pember, of North West-st, was "treated" to a delicious dinner at his home.
The dinner was served from a beautiful decorated table with flowers and ferns, the crowning feature being a big white birthday cake with the required number of pink candles twinkling out their information.
After dinner group singing, dancing, games and music diversified the entertainment program.
Guests at the pretty affair were the Misses Gail Pember, Erma Pember, Emily Geise, Ray Grover, Rose Wagner, Emily Geise, the Messers Cecil Chambers, La Habra, Marvin Middleton, Hervy Pomber, Bill Stachley, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Pember, an aunt and uncle from Los Angeles, who, with the honoree and his parents, made a very jolly group.

BILLY WHISKERS
BY FRANCES TREGO MONTGOMERY
You remember a big dog had just come up to Billy who was very much in need of help and barked, "Follow me unless you want to be blown to pieces."
And Billy started after the dog, but he had a hard time to even keep him in sight, let alone keep up with him, fast runner as he was, for the dog stretched himself out and ran close to the ground. Being much the same color as the ground—brown mixed with black—it was almost impossible to see him in the unseen light. For the only light there came from the bursting shells bombs and searchlights. One minute there would be a glaring light from the search lights that nearly blinded one, the next total darkness as its rays moved on. And Billy was just about to give up trying to follow the dog when he stopped and waited for Billy to overtake him.
"Excuse me friend, for running away from you. I forgot I was travelling so fast. I was thinking so hard, that, for the minute, I forgot everything but the terrible slaughter and damage those big guns are making, and what a lot of soldiers I shall probably find wounded and needing my help in No-Man's Land when the firing ceases."
"Oh, you are a Red Cross dog then aren't you? I have heard the soldiers telling about you dogs and what wonderful work you have done on the battlefields. And I want to tell you how delighted I am to meet you."
"And how comes it," asked the dog, "that a goat of your size and handsome appearance has escaped the butcher's knife, and the camp cook's when they are so in need of meat."
"I'll tell you. I only arrived in France a short time ago, and I am with the American soldiers. Besides, I am the masseot of a regiment, and the soldiers have protected me from the butchers, cooks and others who would kill me."
"Well well, well! I am more than pleased to make your acquaintance. I too have heard of you since your regiment landed. If I am not mistaken you are the celebrated Billy Whiskers, mascot of Company —"
"You have struck the nail on the head! That is just who I am."
Whiz Bang! Bang! sounded near them.
"We better get out of here and find a safer place to talk," said the dog, "Follow me, and I will take you to a high hill that overlooks the battlefield, from the top of which we can see our line of battle and the enemy's as well. I won't run so fast this time."
"I thought I was a fast runner, and that I could keep up with any dog that was ever born." said Billy, but I can't keen up with you."
That is not strange, as I was trained to run fast to catch criminals, and I have a medal for being the fastest runner of all the dogs in the kennels around New York City."
"New York City? Why, what do you, a French dog, know of New York City?" (Tomorrow the dog will tell Billy his story.)

Mrs. Horracks, called in La Ha-more backbone urged in voting
The following inspirational bit is taken from Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt's address before the National Law Enforcement Convention held in Washington, D.C., April 10 to 11:
"Ending on the high note of Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt's ringing appeal to 'give yourselves,' the 1500 United States delegates and representatives of five foreign countries concluded their program Mrs. Catt declared:
"Your vote with righteousness on your side can bring about anything you want in this Republic. What we need is not so much intelligence or more education on this question, but more backbone. I ask you to join me in the vow which I took 35 years ago to be a total abstainer, and in the vow which I later took as a voter not to cast my ballot for any member of a legislature, governor, senator, president of the United States, or anyone who had any power to appoint prohibition enforcement agents until I knew him to be dry. Does that mean that you must leave your parity?
"No, I mean that if enough of you demand it, there will be dry candidates on both tickets. The trouble is that the people do not respect us, the people who make and enforce the laws. Just as soon as we gain in this respect for ourselves as the lawmakers of a republic we will have a law enforcement country. We must take the whole prohibition machinery out of politics. We must talk prohibition, not in parliaries but in numbers, not to ourselves but in political party conventions, everywhere every day. The way to keep our opinions from counting is to talk and not work. Our opinions organized are worth dozen not organized."
