MILTON SILLS WITH VIRGINIAVALLI IN "A Lady of Quality" A TREMENDOUS PICTURIZATION OF FRANCIS HODGSON BURNETT'S GLORIOUS ROMANCE A MAJESTIC AND GLITTERING PRESENTATION OF SUPREME GRANDEUR. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY IN ALL HISTORY—AND THE MOST THRILLING. VERNON TAKES THREE STRAIGH Expect Hartranft to Make New World's Records Today STADIUM, PALO ALTO, Cal., April 26—Smash 'em! That slogan brot together on the oval here today Stanford and California tracksters, the west's most bitter rivals, in a dual meet calculated to smash the Bruin's track supremacy, topple over two world's records and establish a new national attendance mark. When the last spiked foot has registered its imprint in the Cardinal's new oval today it was expected Stanford will have triumphed over the Bruins, upsetting their record as three times winners of national track honors; that Glenn (Tiny) Hartranft, premier Red-shirt performer, will have shattered the world's shot put and discus marks and that the big throng of fans will have easily exceeded the national dual track meet attendance record of 11,000. COUNTY Y FIELD MEET POSTPONED Orange-co. Y. M. C. A. track and field meet, which was to have been held at Anaheim May 3 and, which would have drawn over 250 athletes, has been called off, following a meeting of county secretaries, Horticultural Commissionen A. A. Brock and other officials. The medals had been ordered for the honors and a silver trophy purchased. But as everyone else is co-operating against the hoof and mouth disease, officials thought it best to postpone the gathering. "CAMPS OUT" IN "TRUST'S OFFICE" NEW YORK, April 26—Mrs. Orienta B. Aram, a woman tobacco grower from California, was released from custody on six months' probation today, following her arrest at the instigation of the American Tobacco Co. The woman had "camped out" in the company's offices for six weeks, seeking to compel officials to buy her tobacco crop. She said the company was a trust. After a wild first inning with six runs, the Cubs took it easy, downing St. Louis, 7 to 5. Haines did well thereafter, but it was too late. K. of C. benefit baseball dance-Elks Club, April 29. Six doubles, a home run by Speaker and eleven assorted singles were aplenty to give the verdict to the Indians over the Tigers, 10 to 2. Shaute was indiscreet, if not parsimonious, with his hits. Ken Williams came back to the lineup but could not stem the tide of defeat and the Brown dropped deeper into the cellar. The White Sox were outhit 11 to 7, but won handily 6 to 3. The high priced Simmons repaid Connie Mack's large cash expenditure with a neat homer with two on and the Athletics took a close decision from the Senators and Walter Johnson, 6 to 5. Dazzy Vance took a fall out of Young Mr. Deah and Squire Ebbets triumphed over John McGraw, 3 to Nels. VERNON TAKES THREE STRAIGHT LOS ANGELES—Vernon mailed it three in a row over San Francisco yesterday by taking the fourth game 9 to 4. Essick Tigers fatured some hefty stiff work, starting their clouting early. First they hopped on Be Geary and continued their attack when Lefty Williams took the mound, making 17 hits. Geary was easy for the Cat who got four hits and as many runs in the opening canto. For more bingles in the second brw home only one man. The Seals managed to scoot two runs in the sixth when Hibs, Berf Ellison, clouted homer with Mulligan on base. After that Jim Christian seemed to have the Indian sign on the Seal's whiskers and they we held in check. Essick's crew lengthened the margin in the sixth and seventh and called it a day. Pete Schneider home run, which travelled into deep center field, netted hit a ten spot owner Ed Male. It scored two men. San Francisco attempted ruffly in the first of the ninth but that was all, scoring two free runs on a double by Agnale and singles by Valla, Mulligan and Wauer. Ellison ended the performance by forcing Wane at second after clouting a single. Baseball Standings PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W. L. SARGUM PROUTINGS The following from the West-minister Gazette, is a sum up of Johnny Bull on the U. S. Lawn Tennis Ass'n, decree that a player writing the game is a professional, and for once Johnny Bull is right. "Purists in this instance have gone much too far. If such a rule as the player-writer decision were universally applied the public would be cut off from the descriptive and instructive writings of the best exponents of many games, a deprivation which would be seriously resented." The rule has caused William Tilden to withdraw from the Davis Cup team, which is a serious setback to America's chances of again capturing that honored prize. Tilden is one of the greatest tennis players that the world has ever known and his action has caused much comment not only in America, but abroad. He claims to be ready to represent the old U. S. A. just as soon as the association gets over this player-writer hallucination. Public demand should force the association to re-send their ruling. J. Sanders Wilson, a wrestling promotor, is trying to revive the sport in Los Angeles. He has rounded up a bunch of rough and ready guys for his first show. His main event includes Jim Londos, who has been wrestling a great deal in the East in the last few weeks. Jim tackled such men as Strangler Lewis and Zyblaiko and many others. Jim is up with the best there is. His opponent for the evening is Yussif Hussane, supposed to be the champion of Turkey. These foreign wrestlers are all champions. I'll bet Bool Montana is as near-champion of Turkey as this Yussif of guy. MISS LUCAS WINS COUNTY CONTEST Miss Marjorie Lucas, representing Fullerton High school, took first place in the National Oratorical Contest held at the First Congregational Church, Santa Ana, last evening. Her oration was on "The Constitution." Frank Watson, Orange, won second place with his talk on "The Constitution," the Bulwark of Freedom. Miss Edna Baungardner, of Anahiem, took third place. She delivered an address on "Our Constitution." There were six schools represented. Miss Lucas will go to San Bernardino May 2 to compete with other So., Calif. schools. RAIN INTERFERES AT DRAKE RELAYS DES MOINES, April 26—Posibilities that the Drake Stadium track might be in such condition this afternoon as to prevent holding all of the finals in the fifteenth annual relay meet loomed today as rain fell intermittently from overcast skies. The two races which Charlie Paddock, foremost star at the gathering of athletes announced last night he would run today "If conditions were right" were almost conceded to be out of consideration. Following his tying of his own world's record for the 100 yard dash at yesterday's meet the California sprinter announced that he had convinced himself of his fitness and that he would run today in the 125 and 100 yard dashes, giving Everingham and Phelps of Iowa a further handicap than he gave them yesterday. This decision was not affected by an official announcement that in his 100 yard special yesterday in which he was clocked at 99.6, the world's record, he had beaten the starting gun by a fraction of a second. He offered to re-run the race but weather conditions yesterday prevented this. NON TAKES THREE STRAIGHT ANGELES—Vernon made in a row over San Francisco yesterday by taking the game 9 to 4. I'll bet Bool Montana is as near champion of Turkey as this Yussifol guy. The semi-windup brings together Bool Montana and Sailor Mulligan. Both have fallen before our Orlando Miller. They should make an interesting match as they are of about the same ability. Bool may be able to rough the sailor into submission but the sailor has more science and is younger. The card should be a rough, tough affair. These foreigners seem to think the rough stuff is wrestling. Jim Londos is noted for his rough stuff and we all know Bool. These dirty little tricks displayed by the foreign wrestlers do more to ban the game than any other thing else does. The Peerless Leader, Frank Chance, is back in California from Chicago where he went a few weeks ago to take charge of the White Sox. Chance was unable to stand the climate in the windy city at this time. He is going to rest up a bit and then spend several months down at Palm Springs. The climate worked wonders for him down there early this spring and he expects to stay there till he has fully recovered his health. Cominsky informed him that his job would be held open for his return. Babe Ruth has three home runs to his credit so far. The Babe is starting early this season to clout his long ones. Romero Rojas, the Chillian that made Louis Angel Firpo sidestep, is creating quite a bit of excitement in his training camp. He is training for his coming fight with Floyd Johnson. Floyd will make the Chillian prove what he is worth. Floyd is not a bum by any means. He was rushed along a little too fast or he would not have fallen victim to old Jess Willard and Jack Renault. If Johnson gets by this Chillian his stock in trade will raise again and they will be grooming him for a championship fight. They say that he can not hit but he has knocked out a few that can hit. He has nerve and considerable science. He is liable to make the fight world set up and take notice yet. SIMONICH GIVEN BOXING LESSON PORTLAND, Ore., April 26. Joe Simonich, a scowling wild man boxer, from Butte, went ten rounds to a draw with Pinky Mitchell, junior welterweight champion, here last night. Mitchell gave Simonich a boxing lesson and simply tied him in knots in the infighting and clinches. The Butte boy was tough and rough and able to take them. He was overweight, but Mitchell's title was not at stake. Liquidat Full Bearin WHEAT MARKET HIGHER CHICAGO, April 26.—Too cold weather in parts of Europe gave a slightly bullish tinge to European news and lack of any important domestic events resulted in higher wheat today. Wheat closed the short session up ½ to ⅔; corn down ¼ to ¾ and oats ½ to ½ lower. STOCKS ADVANCE FURTHER NEW YORK, April 26.—Further progress toward recovery was made in the abbreviated session on the stock market today. Trading in general was quiet but steady, gains ranging from a fraction to over one point. Oils gave an excellent account of themselves. Pacific Oil rose ⅓ to 50⅛ and Houston 1 point to 66⅜. Steel, altho quiet, showed good fractional gains but railroad shares were neglected, but held fairly steady. Equipment, sugars, shipping, motors and industrials showed consistent strength. Government bonds unchanged; railway and other bonds steady. Stock sales today totalled 430,-200 shares; bonds $6,713,000. Stock sales for the week, $.652,-300 shares; bonds $88,885,000.
