Sociage Fr HUDSON BIBLE SENIOR BRIDGE TRANSPORT CO., Hudson Borough now for a Essex coach the public's coach than ever be the maze of price changes, it remains the cylinder enclosed car lists at less than $1000 in Detroit. As nearly everyone wants a air cylinder car, and all but a very small minority prefer the enclosed car unless it is priced too high, the Essex coach has struck the public in two of its strongest preferences. Here in our own city, we have been holding tests with owners to prove the performance, economy and endurance qualities of the car. Anyone who belongs to the Essex four knows what an exceptional car that was in all those respects. But the running tests we have held prove that the present six is its definite all-around superior. Its ability in every really important respect is indeed most remarkable and unusual. We now have a parts price list which is supplied to every owner when he buys his car. This list shows the prices at which genuine Hudson-Essex parts can be bought anywhere. We urge every motorists to look through one of these lists. If he has had experience in buying parts he will see at once that he is being offered exceptionally favorable prices. NO LICENSES EXCEPT ON TESTS (Continued from page one) ed several cases of men driving cars on the public highways who were entirely deaf. Furthermore the law gives us no authority to demand that the applicant have sufficient experience to operate a car without hazard to himself and others. "I shall recommend an amendment to provide examinations for prospective operators. A small fee, sufficient to cover the cost of maintaining examiners could be charged. While it is true that a large percentage of accidents are not due to inexperienced drivers, but to carelessness of good drivers, I believe that such a law would go far toward reducing the death list on the highways." Replies to a questionnaire sent out by the Division of Motor Vehicles indicate that a large number of eastern states have adopted laws similar to that proposed by Marsh. In most of these states an examining fee of from 50 cents to $2 is charged. Requirements in Massachusetts are particularly rigid. In that state beginners are required to demonstrate their ability to handle a car in heavy traffic, turn around in close quarters, control the motor on grades, back the car, etc. Physical fitness and a thorough knowledge of the law are also required. LOTS OF WORK IN COUNTY PLANNED (Continued from Page One) only part of the road has been closed to traffic. The pouring of concrete in Laguna canyon road, which is being improved for a mile and one-half, will start probably on Monday. ANSWER QUESTIONS ON BALLOON TIRES The Goodrich Rubber Co., which now is making the Brunswick tires, has sent a number of answers to questions on the balloon tire to Daniels & Williams, distributors of this tire and the Ajax Here are some of the questions and answers: 1. Do balloon tires help riding qualities? Yes. This is one of the main features. Because of their larger cross section and low air pressure, balloon tires absorb irregularities in the road from which high pressure tires have to rebound. The result is that in most cases roughness and projections in the road are obliterated as far as the occupants of balloon tired cars are concerned. 2. Do balloon tires reduce repair bills for the maintenance of the car? Yes, due to the greater cushioning effect of balloon tires there is less vibration of the car which eliminates to a large extent the frequent adjustment and tightening of parts. 3. Do they make the car easier or harder to stop? Cars equipped with balloon tires are much easier to stop because of their larger area of road contact. 4. Do balloon tires lower the road clearance of the car? In some cases yes, in others, not. It all depends upon the size of the tire replacing your present equipment. 5. Do balloon tires affect the speed of the car? Balloon tires make it possible to travel over rough, winding and otherwise troublesome roads without slowing down below normal speed. The what in most cases rough-projections in the road are good dates to give inspection. Many batteries come into service stations time after time with the water one-half to three-quarter of an inch below the tops of the plates. Then after six months probably a fellow wonders why his battery needs charging. He does not remember ever neglecting to put water, at the required time, into it. That’s true, but he was too long between watering operations. Keep water off the top of your battery and also see that the terminals are well greased with vasoline. Give your battery at least half a chance to do its part. A trombone player is the only man, who by letting things slide makes a success of it. Sometimes the other fellow—gets it switches off his lights and smiles a smile of thanks, but sometimes the fellow disregards all signals—and goes by with a ha, ha, or waves his hand that he knows what he is doing. Few people realize that there are about three reasons why a battery must go to a battery shop for repairs. These reasons are either to recharge, rebuild or a new battery. In many cases the motorist himself is to blame. One of the livest questions today is: (A series of articles on the care and upkeep of the car from the day of purchase. The articles were written exclusively for the Plain Dealer by Joe Nichols. They will appear weekly.) The electric system of an automobile is the most important factor. Its upkeep is dependent upon your knowledge of its needs. The storage battery should be inspected and filled with distilled water every 15 days regularly, the first and fifteenth of each month are good dates to give inspection. Ten events are carded for Sunday. Two motor-bike races to be run on the speedway and another of the “hill-and-dale” chases, up and down the “Targo Fiorio” route will be staged around a portion of the course over which the Thanksgiving day $50,000 road race will be run. With the indefinite postponement of the annual Capistrano classic many noted two-wheel daredevils from other parts of the state who had prepared their motors for the Orange-co climb, will compete at Ascot next Sunday, the entries of these riders adding much class to the hill climb. Arthur Davidson said yesterday that in future he will stick to his new 183-inch Frontenae and turn his Fronty over to Jack Petticord, Canadian national champion, who drove the car to victory on Sunday in the Invitational race. The “jlnx” car, No. 45 of the Johnny Mais stable, has been barred from future competition at Ascot. The technical committee, composed of A. C. Webb, Charles Basle and Teddy Tezlaff, is authority for the statement that all cars participating at Ascot from now on will have to undergo a rigid inspection, especially as to steering knuckles, tires and rims. Few people realize that there are about three reasons why a battery must go to a battery shop for repairs. These reasons are either to recharge, rebuild or a new battery. In many cases the motorist himself is to blame. One of the livest questions today, of interest to the motorist, is the advisability of making a charge for the care and adding of distilled water to the storage battery. The doing of this work free of any charge has been the past custom, but a good many shops are charging for this work. All those who have made this new move are making a charge of 25c for testing, cleaning the terminals, filling of water, etc. This gives the motorist a good serviceable job and not a slip-shod job as has often been done when the service was free. Batteries should be given regular inspection during the summer months, the hot days absorb more water than the cool days. Drush the dust away from the top of the battery when inspecting and examine the rigidity of the carrier frame of the battery. Keep the battery from moving in its carrier, as this would probably break the battery box as well as cause noise to be added to the car. The motor, transmission, propeller shaft are set to straight line drive to read and thus eliminate undue strain.
