Tilden, II, national singles tennis champion, today added a word of testimony to his letter to the U.S. Lawn Tennis Ass'n, declaring that only the most complete vindication of his and tur status would persuade him to compete in the Davis cup match and others under the auspices of the body in question. Tilden made it very clear that unless this vindication is forthcoming he will no longer be seen on the tennis courts under any tour guise. "The report of Holcome Washmade public on Saturday, leaving me no alternative but to tend my resignation as a member of the Davis cup team and other teams promoted by the U.S. Lawn Tennis Ass'n," Tilden declared. "He and they have declared that an 'evil influence' to the young generation in tennis. Rather than be that, I will step out of competition altogether. Upon being assured that Mr. Ward has made mistake in his phraseology or that he was not justified in writing what he did, I will be only glad to resume my tennis playing in defense of the Davis cup. Otherwise, I am through and glad of it." Tilden was exercised over certain paragraphs in Mr. Ward's report to the amateur rules committee, referring to the champion name as a "bad example to the younger generation, by the fact that he made money out of tennis writing." He seemed to think that Mr. Ward exceeded the bounds of pliable ethics. "Mr. Ward is an estimable gentleman and undoubtedly knows very much about lawn tennis," the champion said. "As a rule, he makes exceedingly good reports. In this case I do not agree with what he says. He has characterized me by name as a manacee the game and if I cared to, I could riddle his report full of holes, what no care to. I have been cared for." BIG PRODUCTION COMING TO UNITED Life in another world, the world of yesterday, is pictured dramatically in "A Lady of Quality," the Universal-Jewel screen transcription of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel of that name, coming to the United Theatre for an extended run, next Sunday. London of 1700 is far away from the modern world of 1923-4. Customs, manners, clothes, architecture and beliefs of that day are little like those of today. Yet the basic elements of human nature as the photoplay reviews them, were much the same. Men loved women, and conquered kingdoms for them. And men made love to women and forgot them, quite in line with inexplicable but unchanging laws of human nature. Virginia Vaill is the star. She is the exquisite leading woman who gained exceptional honors for her work in "The Storm," and other big Universal specials. AZUSA "DIXIE" Hello, send me for year, and Tuesday, April 22nd, 1924 ALLEGES PRAUD IN EVICTING TENANT Claiming he suffered heavy loss of profits from lease on acreage near Bolsa when the owner, he alleged, tricked him into giving possession of the property, George Ketschener, 1101 East Fourtn- Santa Ana, today brought an action in the superior court against J. A. Simpson for $25,000 damages. Ketschner leased the land in 1922 from Irn-Leek of Escondido under an agreement whereby, if he sold the property within a year and Ketschner was forced to hold possession, he would receive bonus of $500. Early in 1923, Ketschner sets forth in his complaint, Leck sold the land to Simpson, but Ketschner, he said, was told that he need not give up the lease. However, in December, 1923, Simpson notified Ketschner that he had sold the property and that possession would be required. Ketschner stated. The $500 bonus was paid to Ketschner and accepted, he said, the land then being given up. Later Ketschner alleges he learned that Simpson had not sold the land but merely worked a farm to sell Ketschner. In his court action, Ketschner demands $100 for loss of profits from its alfalfa crop and rental of a house on the property, and asks 10,000 exemplary damages. LAIM PEDDLERS HAVE ADVANTAGE OF RETAILER By getting one’s business classified under one section of the ordinance governing the occupation of license tax one pays $10; under another section $10, etc., etc. Peddlers also have an advantage over established businesses. These are some of the charges made at last night’s monthly dinner of the Merchahts’ Section of the C. of C. at the Elks’ club. Doc” Barnes, chairman of the committee, was instructed to consult with the new city attorney regarding the correction of such alleged injustices. In the Herbert Brenon Paramount production of "Shadows of Paris," which opened at the California today, the star once more comes into her own. She is quite her old self as Claire, leader of the Apache bands of the Parishian underworld. Then there is Chas de Roche as her Apache lover, who is called away to war and falsely reported killed; Huntly Gordon as Raoul whom Claire posing as a Polish war widow, married; and Adolphe Menjoups Raoul's secretary and friend—all are featured and all give excellent account of themselves. The story is one of the upper and lower world of Paris, the playground of the entire world. It is a colorful and appealing tale, an adaptation of the French play, "Mon Homme," by the author of "Kiki." Gareth Hughes and Vera Reynolds head the strong support.
