OAKLAND AGAIN IN YOSEMITE RUN
The first car to signify its intention to again enter the annual Los Angeles to Yosemite economy run is the two-times winner, the Oakland six, according to Harry L. Turton, Anabeins Oakland dealer.
"The Oakland six is to be entered in the Yosemite economy run this year," says Turton. "Oakland has won the sweepstakes cups for two years straight, as well as walking away with the class cups, and the performance will be kept up until some other car comes along and surprises us by keeping the big honors.
"I feel that the regulations for the run this year merit the consideration of everyone interested in the economical maintenance of an automobile. The old method of running and coasting has been ruled out, and the car must now be driven just as any owner would drive it under normal conditions. We have been strong advocates of this method, as we feel it will have the effect of showing the public exactly what the various cars can actually do on gasoline saving as well as oil."
"It is the plan to enter two cars this time, one a closed car and one an open model, to give Oakland enthusiasts the opportunity to draw direct comparisons between open and closed car economy as a balance against the greater comfort. We believe that a closed car can be operated at about the same cost, and this test will give us the answer.
"Last year the Oakland broke all existing records by averaging 36.2 miles on a gallon of gasoline, using less fuel than a car has ever used on a trip from Los Angeles to Yosemite valley, regardless of size or price. It set up a tom mileage that should stand for all time, and I believe that the stupendous mileage made by the Oakland last year was one of the outstanding reasons for the change in the driving rules. We are glad of the success."
RIGID INSPECTION IN SANTA BARBARA
Motorists into Santa Barbara may expect delays of one to three hours at the county line, where cars are impeded for pets, fruit, vegetables etc., and sprayed inside and out besides run through a solution of disinfectant. The finish on cars is likely to be hurt, says the statement to the Auto Club of So Calif., received this morning.
Travel in Yosemite valley is temporarily suspended, but tourists can enter by train from Merced.
