DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS

BE NOT EXTREME AS TO ANIMAL PLAGUE
In the grave situation which exists in California as to the malady which is attacking herds of livestock, it is well for the people to avoid two extremes—extreme alarm about it, and extreme indifference to it. The situation is grave enough to warrant the most drastic measures to eradicate the plague. But there is no reason for giving way to pessimism. There is reasonable hope that the plague will be conquered in due time, and that the livestock industry of California will be restored to normal.
Assuredly the people should not give way to extreme indifference, or open hostility to the preventive measures which are being taken under auspices of federal and state authorities. The battle which is being fought is hard enough, at best. It should not be made harder by obstacles deliberately or thoughtlessly thrown in the way of those who are combatting the disease.
Whole-hearted practical co-operation all along the line should result in very good results quickly in subduing this plague. Let it be urged upon the people that they avoid the two extremes—extreme pessimism and undue alarm, on the one hand, and extreme indifference or hostility to the pre-
difference, or open hostility to the preventive measures which are being taken under auspices of federal and state authorities. The battle which is being fought is hard enough, at best. A Little Talk on Thrift
(By S. W. STRAUS, President American Society for Thrift)
It is interesting to note the many experiments now being made by scientists to utilize the forces of nature that have for centuries been wasted. The successful outcome of these efforts will effect important economic changes in the future. They involve gigantic problems in thrift, for just as a successful business concern is constantly seeking to eliminate unnecessary expense, so these efforts represent the endeavors of mankind to live more efficiently and economically.
Eighteen years ago an Italian manufacturer, noting the steady column of volcanic steam coming from the ground in an Italian mountain valley, conceived the idea that this steam could be made to drive an engine. He set up the necessary equipment and soon was running the machinery in his plant with power which nature had been wasting.
This experiment in the utilization of volcanic steam has been successfully followed in many parts of the world. In Bolivia the government has granted a concession through which steam from Mt. Tatio will be made use of in generating electrical energy for Bolivian railroads.

THE DRIVE AGAINST SECRETARY WEEKS—Boston Herald
The Republican cabinet and officials are apparently the object of attack before the Democratic-Progressive Daughters committee because they are alleged to have failed as yet to recover from certain aircraft corporations, monies paid to these aircraft corporations during the war by Democratic officials. We hear nothing of any attempt to prosecute, indict, or otherwise complain of Secretary of War Baker or any of his officials for making the payments, the failure to recover which excites so much notoriety and attack on the part of the investigating committee and its so-called expert witnesses.
Why is so much stress placed upon the failure of Republicans to recover monies paid out by Democrats, as it is alleged improperly, if not corruptly? Why is there not the same hue and cry made by this investigating committee against the men who paid the money as is raised against the men who, it is claimed, ought to try to re-that Secretary Weeks or other Republicans are accused of not getting cover the money? Our readers should remember that all the monies Secretary Weeks or other Republicans are accused of not getting back, were paid to the various war contractors by the Wilson administration. It is much easier to stop paying money than it is to recover it after it has been paid.
Before a Republican administration should attempt to get back money paid by a Democratic administration, it should clearly be sure that the payments ought to be recovered. It ill behooves the investigating committee, or the public generally, to make accusations against Republicans for failing to get the money back unless they are ready at the same time to make at least equal accusations against the Democrats who paid out the money.

Mechanical engineers are becoming more and more interested in the problem of utilizing the tides of the sea for generating electric power. English engineers have stated that it is only a matter of time until the tidal activities in the harbors of Southern England will be made use of, while engineers in the United States and Canada are interested in studies being made of the problem of making use of the tides in the Bay of Fundy.
The development of hydro-electric power, which in recent years has reached large proportions, is, in the opinion of many experts, only in its infancy.
Scientists are experimenting with apparent hope of success, in utilizing the sun's rays and the wind as sources of power.
The development of these projects not only provides an interesting study as to what the next 50 or 100 years will bring in the daily lives of the people, but they illustrate the great fundamental truth that thrift, conservation and efficiency are among the impelling factors in all human progress.
According to a Japanese experimenter the light emitted by glow worms has some of the radioactive properties of X-rays.
