'Fryrac Night Guide' Is New Convenience Offered to Fans How the Fryrac Night Guide is Operated Through the Windshield, Shown by Pretty Miss The "Fryrac Night Guide" put on the market by the Western Auto Supply Co. is creating much interest among local fans. This light is accessible on both open and closed cars and, by attaching directly thru the windshield, eliminates glare. With the increasing use of closed cars and the wide-spread adoption of windshield wings on open cars, the "Fryrac" spotlight has become a nationally known product. It is worked entirely from the inside of the car and the platol control enables the driver to direct the light on the road from an angle that removes all possibility of glare in front of his machine. It has many advantages over the out-at-the-side type of spotlight for it can be used at the time when it is most needed—in bad weather when the curtains are IMPROVEMENT TO RIDGE ROAD LAUDED The project to widen the Ridge road, the State highway between Los Angeles and the San Joaquin valley, has the warm approval of local drivers. The $24,000 net inside will be used largely in "day-lighting" and widening curves. It has many advantages over the out-at-the-side type of spotlight for it can be used at the time when it is most needed—in bad weather when the curtains are on the car. The light may be set to illuminate the side of the road, where it is needed, as many accidents are caused by the drivers being blinded by the glare of headlights on an approaching car, and attempting to feel his way and trust in luck that he will come safely through. The Eryrac may be set in any position and it will "stay put" regardless of road shocks. It is said that it will throw a shaft of light for a distance of 1500 feet. The Western Auto Supply Co. are equipped with machinery that enables them to install these light guides at the rate of one every 15 minutes. 100,000 WRONG APPLICATIONS By WILL H. NARSH (Chief Division of Motor Vehicles) Approximately 15 per cent of all applications for renewal of automobile licenses, received by the Division of Motor Vehicles during the 1924 renewal period, were defective because the applicants had failed to comply with the law in the kind of information required and the amount of the registration fee. An idea of the tremendous task facing the division in ironing out the wrinkles from the thousands of applications, held up for one reason or another, can be gained from this condition. Up to March 1 we had registered about a million cars of all types. This meant that we had received, in round numbers, 100,000 applications which could not be filled until letters had been written to their senders and answers received. Some of these applicants had failed to forward the proper papers. Some had sent too much money; others had not sent enough. Others had failed to give us the correct engine number; still others had failed to observe the proper regulations in making transfers. Our cashiers found a considerable number of bad checks had been offered in payment of fees. About the middle of the month we checked over the mail return local drivers. The $24,000 wet inside will be used largely in "day-lighting" and widening curves. The crew which has been busy with a power shovel widening the Mountain Springs grade on the San Diego-Yuma road was to be moved to the road this week. WOOD DENIES HE PLANS TO RESIGN MANILA, April 12.—Governor General Leonard Wood today denied reports published in the United States that he would resign if not supported in his policies by Washington authorities. REPLACEMENTS NIL ON OAKLAND Edward Cordero of Huntington Beach has driven 18,000 miles in his 1923 Oakland sport touring without spending anything for repairs or replacements, he told Harry L. Turton, Northern Orange-co dealer. The same tires were still on the machine. The machine isn't pumping oil yet. His mileage is 25 to the gallon. He runs his car for 1500 miles without change of oil and then changes it completely. A tourist with friends in Placentia has done better still. He has driven 43,000 miles without any repairs, traveling from Indiana all over the east, including Canada, across the country to California and up to the northwest, where he has been recently. The four-wheel brakes saved his life in Colorado, he says. This man is traveling for his wife's health. At 33,000 miles he changed four of his tires. MAY OPERATE ON SENATOR COUZENS WASHINGTON. April 12.—Senator James Couzens, Republican of Michigan, one of the country's wealthiest men, who has been stricken with stomach and intestinal disorders, expected to undergo an operation here today. 14 DODGE UPKEEP COST, 24,000 MILES Spending only $14 and some cents to cover the cost of taking up the bearings and grinding the valves, E. M. Lopez of Taft, oil miller, drove 24,500 miles in the year ending Nov. 14 last without any other expense except for oil and gas, he told Anaheim friends this week. His tires held up as well as the car, and Lopez gives the car and its own care of them credit forast. He changes the tires around every 3000 miles. The expense of going over the bearings and valves was voluntary, because the car would have one long way yet without it, says Lopez. A friend of his, who also has aodge roadster, similarly equipped, has driven 30,000 miles with the same experience, says Lopez. Lopez's mileage is around 29, and on a long trip, including Redlands and Bakersfield, he averaged 35 miles, he declared, the phill climbs being compensated or by coasting down hill. Lopez changes all his oil every 2000 miles, but otherwise doesn't touch it. DISTRIBUTION OF DURANT SPREADING "Seventy-eight distributors in 5 counties outside of the United States now represent Durant products," according to J. W. Hawk, general sales manager of Durant Motor Co. of California. "Argentine holds the lead in volume of purchases. Holland and one Scandinavian countries are also bright spots in the export field, while Senegal in South Africa has developed a good market, and even the Island of Cyprus has applied for a Durant and Locomobile franchise. Fifteen applications have been received by Durant Motors, Inc., of New York from Germany." points out Hawk, and some of these were to have been added to the list on March 1 when the embargo, which has exited for several years, was sched- ROGERS INJURED SEATTLE, April 12.
