FORRENCE FIELD
OUTPUT 58,000
By Ellwood J. Munger
That Torrance is fast approaching the former activity and big production of Santa Fe Springs is evident by the fact that Torrance production advanced from 47,000 to 56,000 barrels this past week and the output is still going up. For the first time in the history of the field, Torrance produced a number of 1000-barrel wells, and three went as high as 1600 barrels this past week. The big production the field is now getting is coming from the central west section and the extreme east section of the field.
The Chanler-Canfield Midway, the discoverer of the Torrance field, set a new figure for individual well production with the bringing in of Kettler No. 14 a 1615-barrel well at a depth of 3540 feet. The big well marks something new and startling for the eastern section of Torrance. In the central west section of the field Torrence 41 at a depth of 3740 feet started off and is holding steadily at 1200 barrels. The Chanster-Canfield, in addition to completing two of the biggest wells that the Torrance field has yet had put on production, six other wells, running in output from 109 to 650 barrels, has boosted its field output from 7000 barrels to over 12,000 barrels.
In mentioning and calling to mind the wonderful success of the Chanler-Canfield Midway, the oil fraternity must not lose sight of the fact that Ward Blodgett, geologist for the C. C. M. O., comes in for the honor of opening the field. It was Mr. Blodgett who made careful surveys and studies of the field two years ago, and it was Blodgett who not only discovered the field but picked out for his company the properties and sections of the field from which the record-breaking wells are now being drilled.

By S. W. STRAUS
It is a matter of public interest that marked progress has been made during the school year now drawing to a close in the matter of thrift education. In all parts of the country both urban and rural, schools are introducing thrift in their curricula.
These results have come after eight years of research and industry upon the part of the Committee on Thrift Education of the National Council of Education. The chairman of this committee recently reported a widespread and growing interest in thrift education by schools throughout the nation.
It is to the credit of this committee that definite and concrete courses of study have been mapped out which are receiving practical application.
In other words, thrift in the schools has arrived. From now on, year after year, the work will grow in results. More and more schools will take it up, and a substantial foundation thus will be laid for thrift practices by future generations.
It is worthy of special attention that in the courses of study mapped out by the educational committee, thrift is given its broadest application. It is the thrift that means eliminating waste. It is the thrift of efficiency and progress.
Unfortunately there has been encouragement given to the belief that thrift is merely saving money, but the children of this nation are now being taught the broader principles of real thrift. The results will be that future generations will not only have a better understanding of the value of saving money, but will have at the same time an intelligent grasp of the rightful uses to which their savings should be placed.
It is a matter worthy of public pride that the United States is the first country in which the subject of thrift has been given a definite place in the work of the public schools.

IN THE MATTER OF ROAD
W. M. Keck is covering the Superior Oil Co. with glory at Torrance. The Superior Oil Co.'s No. 19 completed at 3895 feet made the largest initial production of any well yet drilled in the field. Superior No. 19 started off at 3850 barrels and later settled to 1,600. That the Superior's big producer is one of the livest wells in the field may be adjudged by the fact that the casing pressure registers 710 pounds and the tubing is carrying a pressure of 180 pounds.
The Standard Oil Co. put two nice wells on production at Torrance this past week with the completion of Interstate No. 1, a 625-barrel well, and Marble Fee No. 5, a 780-barrel producer. Morbile Lease No. 6 came in at 750 barrels and is making some of the fields' highest gravity oil. New wells started by the Standard include Ellingwood No. 1 and Weston No. 1. In view of the successful development of big production in the central west section of the field the Ellingwood property looks like one of the best in that section.
The White Star Oil and Refining Co.'s No. 2, drilling in the extreme eastern end of the field, has passed the 3750 mark and is showing up splendidly. At the time the White Star took this property it looked like semi-wildest property, if such a name could be so applied, but now it appears that the holding is a full fledged oil property.
SAN DIEGO.-Police Judge Chambers has established the precedent that it is a car figures in an auto collision and is not immediately removed the owner may be fined for illegal parking. A. W. Martin paid $10 because his machine was "parked" more than twelve inches from the curb after an accident.

New French Towns
Appear Near Paris
PARIS, April 11.—Two strange new cities are arising on different Paris hills—both due to the high cost of living. At Parc Montsouris, far beyond the Latin Quarter, the "University City" is appearing, inhabited by thousands of students who have been driven from the city by lack of accommodations and high prices. The students are living in hutments on the fortifications and bastions; both sexes are permitted to dwell in this novel settlement.
On the opposite side of Paris, at Montmartre, artists and theatrical people have decided to move out on the open ground beyond the famous hill where a city like that on Montsouris has been planned. The artists met in a dozen cafes to put the scheme on a practical basis. This "City of Artists" will be made up of 1200 houses, consisting of a studio with small rooms attached.
The new craze, in the theatrical way, is a dwarf's theater, which is featured in an apartment in the Avenue Wagram. Four tiny women and three little men are appearing in plays translated from the Russian. The local Heywood Brouna is quite enthusiastic, and the Lilliputians propose to carry their talents downtown.
