EXPECTED TO GET POST IN CABINET (By William K. Hutchinson) (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, April 11.—The late Jake Hamon, one time Republican national committeeman, expected to get a cabinet post as a result of the nomination of Warren G. Harding, for the presidency in 1920, E. G. Costello, a Chicago newspaper man, today told the senate public lands committee. WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE Ohio, April 11.—With its torchlight of investigation turned away temporarily from the nation's capital, the Wheeler-Brookhart committee today followed a trail of alleged corruption to this Ohio town on a "tip" that evidence of a sensational character is locked within the vaults of the Midland National Bank. Senator Burton K. Wheeler, Dem. of Mont., acting prosecutor and Senator Brookhart, Republican of Iowa, chairman, arrived here this morning from Washington, D. C., to conduct a personal examination of the bank's records. The investigation was prompted by secret reports that thousands of dollars were deposited in the bank by men high in public life, under circumstances which could not easily be explained. The visit here marked the second attempt by the committee to obtain possession of the bank records. Previously M. S. Daugherty, president of the bank and a brother of the former attorney by Harry M. Daugherty himself. In event the committee's request for an inspection of the bank's records is refused, the committee has indicated it will recommend to the senate that Mel Daugherty be cited for contempt. President Defends Mellon WASHINGTON, April 11.—President Coolidge today came to the defense of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon, whose private business affairs are being investigated by a senate committee. In a special message to the senate, the president raised strenuous objections to the efforts of the committee to obtain from the treasury department the secret rolls of companies in which Mellon is interested. Transmitting a letter from Secretary Mellon and a letter from the senate committee to Mellon, the president declared it was "incredible that the senate of the United States would knowingly approve the past and proposed conduct of one of its committees which this letter reveals." The committee to which the president referred is that investigating the bureau of internal revenue. The leader of the probe is Senator James Couzens, Republican of Michigan, while Senator James E. Watson, Republican of Indiana, the committee chairman, already has introduced a resolution in the senate proposing that the committee be dissolved so that the investigation will come to an immediate end. PAID $7500 FOR FIGHT FILMS WASHINGTON, April 11.—Another effort to prove that a conspiracy, involving federal officials existed for the purpose of exhibiting the Dempsey-Carpentier fight pictures thruout the country was made today by the Daugherty investigating committee. William Tightman, a special officer employed by the governor of Oklahoma, testified that he paid $7500 to F. C. Quimby of New York, for the right to exhibit the fight films in Oklahoma. SINCLAIR POSTPONES PLEAS CHEYENNE, Wyo., April 11.—Pleadings of counsel for Harry P. Sinclair, in reply to the federal government's suit charging fraud and corruption in obtaining leases to the naval oil reserves of Teapot Dome have been postponed a week, according to announcement here today. Later it was announced that the Sinclair Crude Oil Purchasing Co., and the Sinclair Pipelines Co., which were made defendants in the government's suit, have filed formal answers in the local federal court. Both companies disavow the knowledge of all the material allegations in the government's petition in the Teapot Dome suit. Dismissal of the bill of complaint of the United States is petitioned for in both answers.
