It, however, one asks almost any fashion designer what causes Madame's curry she is apt to attribute it to quite a different motive. One may wager she will say, "It is to greet her old favorite, of course." So the secret's out—Madame is off to her milliner to watch as eagerly as fond parent for its offspring for the return of the small, close-fitting cloche. She may rightly expect her modistise to produce new modes—large hats, off-the-face models, but inevitably she will turn back to the cloche.
History of the Cloche
Since its first appearance several years ago the cloche, as it is popularly known, has undergone some serious changes. A coquettish upper tilt; tiny brims; sides extended slightly down; each has been added, and approved. Repeatedly modistes have tried to effect its entire removal but insistently it has been given new life—by unanimous verdict of its patrons.
This spring fashion arbiters, resignedly accepting the verdict, have set about creating new and charming variations—formal rivals of the cloche. One need glimpse the entrancing new collections with their fresh, vivid colors and exotic, Oriental embellery, to be assured that there most interesting range to choose from.

New Color Tones and Fabrics
Once again cool, refreshing
shades of green promise to be

PHYSICAL TEST FOR 1st GRADERS
The Bureau of Child Hygiene of the California State Board of Health and the State Department of Physical Education are planning a month of physical examinations of children who are about to enter school. These examinations will be conducted by qualified physicians, dentists and nurses in nearly every county in the state during the month of April 15 to May 15. Children residing in the rural districts may take advantage of this opportunity for determining, without cost, if they are physically fit for the first grade. It is an established fact that large numbers of children suffer from defective teeth, enlarged or disused tonsils, adenoids, undernourishment and many other common defects that hinder their progress in school. A physically handicapped child cannot be educated properly. Making a good start in school life is an important factor in determining his entire school life. Announcements regarding the time and places in which these physical examinations will be provided will appear in the county newspapers early in April.

Paris has given a new style trend in the many new models that feature plaid or Roman striped ribbon in bright, warm colors. High standing bow effects of the ribbon form the only trimming on the smart plain shapes. It seems doubtful as to the popularity of this new mode in America except perhaps, for sports wear.
Milliners are placing most unusual emphasis on the veilings that are destined to play an important part in Milliners' spring.
Let us liven up our interiors with some of the fine wares from the land of Mah Jongg, Pung Chow, Egg Foo Yong, and Foo Dogs. There is such vigor and imaginative vitality to the Chinese and Japanese decoration that it makes a very distinctive environment when carefully blended with our modern scheme of home building. Of course restraint and discretion must be used abundantly, when handling the subtle Oriental combinations of line and color. Like their precious game which is all the rage, it requires careful thinking and planning.
My friend, Mr. W———, has inspired with many unusual ideas, which he has been carrying out in the homes of his friends, a hall here, a living room there, a studio for one, a bedroom for another.
Use Teakwood Candlesticks
On one side was the entrance to the living room. Standing like sentinels at this doorway, were two tall teakwood candlesticks with pewter candle holders, each with its spike upon which was fixed a large square shaped candle, with black Chinese characters upon it.
Opposite he had made a very interesting arrangement of chairs and tables, with a great antique gold brocade hanging for a background. Teakwood chairs without arms stood between tables of the same wood, with their familiar open work borders. Each table held a Ming blue lantern, octagonal in shape, lighted, Ming blue glaze filling the interstices in the openwork, through which the light shone.
This elaboration of treatment responds with a red pigskin chest. Balloon lanterns were suspended from the high ceiling, reflecting soft light on a wonderful spun-glass screen. A shrine with a life-size Budda held fascinating incense burners placed below the great god.
For my bedroom Mr. W——— suggested Pekin glass scent bottles, and lamps, such charming lamps! A quaint pair of jade trees in enamel pots were mounted for lamps with shades of georgette in tints of orchid, hello-trope and green to match the sweet colors in the little trees.
COLLEGE MEN BUILD CO-EDS’ DORMITORY
CARLINVILLE, Ill., March 24. Students of Blackburn College, here, have put the theory of "earn and learn," upon which the institution is founded, into actual practice.
Between classes of Greek and higher mathematics a new women's dormitory has arisen on the college campus, every stick and brick of which have been placed and laid by students, who donned overalls and "fell to" like paid workmen.
The need of a new dormitory became pressing. There were so many co-eds at the institution that two Pullman cars had to be placed on a nearby siding and fitted up for the girl students. There was no money to build a new dormitory, in view of present high costs of material and labor.
"We'll build it," the male students said.
They did. In a comparatively few months the structure has

Milliners are placing most unusual emphasis on the veilings that are destined to play an important part in Milady's spring wardrobe. It is safely predicted that the smartly stylish woman will have at least two or three veils for every hat.
The "Butterfly" Vell
This is a two-in-one combination of hairline mesh on one side of which appears black velvet appliques, with black and white combinations in corresponding positions on the other side. Square veils in the many shades of brown and two-toned effects as well as nose veils in chenille dots are favored.
Fine Chantilly lace veils with the two ends worn over the shoulder; some edged with fine Beauvais embroidery, are being sponsored by a leading French milliner. For the woman who appreciates the chie charm of a veil and the very marked service it renders in preserving the beauty of a careful soffure this spring's vogue for veils will be warmly welcomed.
This elaboration of treatment was very effective against simply treated walls. From this beginning one might view his further work in the living room, combining as it did so skillfully, every element of cheer, comfort and interest.
Across the room two long tables stood each with its background of hangings, which were Italian cut velvet scarves of red and gold in Oriental design. Lamps of Japanese porcelain with pagoda shades in gold stood on one table. On the other a fat god of prosperity held the center flanked by soap stone "chops" for book ends. A "chop" is an official seal and stands about seven inches high. Each held a carved Foo dog.
Like an Italian Wall
Among the interesting features developed in a studio by Mr. W——were built-in bookshelves with red lacquer trim to cor-
and laid by students, who donned overalls and "fell to" like paid workmen.
The need of a new dormitory became pressing. There were so many co-eds at the institution that two Pullman cars had to be placed on a nearby siding and fitted up for the girl students. There was no money to build a new dormitory, in view of present high costs of material and labor.
"We'll build it," the male students said.
They did. In a comparatively few months the structure has grown to a modern, fire-proof building. Second-hand lumber, material bought at reduced prices and a willingness on the part of all at the school to aid lent to the success of the venture.
AMERICANS IN CHINA
The American population of China is estimated at 12,000, about four times as large as it was 20 years ago.
The ordinary taxpayer isn't hard-boiled. He is merely soaked—Peoria Star.
Births exceed deaths two to one and there's a marriage every ten minutes.
TO OPERATE AWNINGS
Crank-operated mechanism has been invented with which window awnings can be raised and lowered from inside a room with otu opening a window.
