WONDER RECORD MADE BY GRAY Wettumpka, Ala., Jan. 18, 1924 "Several days ago after I bought a Gray one ton truck from you on Nov. 3, 1923, I decided to take a trip to Florida, so I got a party of three friends, my son and myself and started for Florida, going down the west coast. One of the men with me agreed to furnish the fuel for the trip and therefore kept an accurate check on it. We returned from our trip the other day after covering a total road distance of twenty-six hundred sixty-six miles with a total expense for operation of the truck, of only $18.75. The distance covered while in various towns is not included in the twenty-six hundred sixty-six miles which I estimate would run the total way over twenty-seven hundred miles. The total operating expense of the Gray truck for the entire trip was only $18.75 and we paid as high as twenty-six cents per gallon for gas in lots of places throughout Florida. "We traveled all kinds of roads from the worst to the beat, and had no trouble of any kind. We came to one place that we had our doubts about getting through. This was where the road led through a pond and we would see a number of cars hopelessly swamped in the water, which was almost half way up to the radiator in some places, and water came all over the floor boards of the truck most of the time. I had disconnected the exhaust pipe from the motor to keep the exhaust from choking and we went right around the other cars without any difficulty. "I want to say right here, that my experience on this trip was a revelation as to the good qualities of Our Gray. Some people may be skeptical about the truthfulness of this statement, but I have four eye witnesses to back me up, and I will bet money that I can take the same trip again for less money as the truck is thoroughly broken in now, while..." disconnected the exhaust pipe from the motor to keep the exhaust from choking and we went right around the other cars without any difficulty. "I want to say right here, that my experience on this trip was a revelation as to the good qualities of One Gray. Some people may be skeptical about the truthfulness of this statement, but I have four eye witnesses to back me up, and I will bet money that I can take the same trip again for less money as the truck is thoroughly broken in now, while it was brand new when I started on the trip. If you will do some figuring you will find that my transportation for this trip cost less than eight-tenths of a cent per mile. I know my Gray will give me even better service from now on. I just wish everybody could own a Gray. Yours for much success. Name furnished upon request. The above letter was handed West Bros. the past week by a member of the above firm. They have many such letters on file. See this wonderful car at Los Angeles and Chesapeake, Anaheim. FEW USED CARS LEFT The Appleby Motor Car Co. still has a few cheap cars on its lot opposite the North Lemon street showrooms. The firm is a member of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Ass'n, and markets nearly all its cars there, but these are a few of the ones below the price level fixed by the market. CARAWAY ATTACKS SPEAKER GILLETT WASHINGTON, March 22—With the traditional friendship between the two branches of congregants tossed to the winds, Senator Caraway, Wem., Arkahasas this afternoon in a speech in the senate bitterly denounced Speaker Gillet. PRODUCTION DROPS TO 215,000 The field production of Long Beach dropped to 215,000 barrels last week, and the figure represents the lowest level the famous oil field has had in two years. For the first week in a number of months the new production did not take care of the decline. The future production of the field it seems must come from the southeast slope of the hill where for a number of weeks past some of the biggest producers have been completed. Notable work on the southeast slope of the hill is being done by the Shell Co., the San Martín Oil So. and W. R. Ramsey private operators. These three operators have been bringing in wells running from 25e0 to 4500 barrels. The only new producer of consequence completed at Long Beach during the past week were the A. T. Jergins Trust No. 9 a 100 barrel well, the Laddie Boy Oil Syndicate's 600 barrel well that sanded up, the Mission Bell's 400 barrel well and the Shell Co.'s 250 barrel producer on the Mills lease. The outlook for a western extension of the Long Beach field has not improved in spite of the fact that Silverado No. 1 of the Scheider Corporation is down 5235 feet. Neither has the outlook for a northwest extension of the field improved with the United Oil Co.'s Bixby No. 1 making hole at $330. PLAIN DEALER CLASSIFIED ADS PRODUCE RESULTS The motorist may now light a cigarette without even taking his eyes from the road by the aid of the combined cigarette container and lighter plotted above. These lighters, marketed by the Western Auto Supply Co., require but three operations to obtain the desired "smoke"; (1) Dispense cigarette (2) lights and puffs it, (3) remove lighted cigarette. Among the many new innovations that have been produced during the past few months in the way of cigarette lighters, the one that is rapidly gaining favor with the motorist is the combined cigarette case and lighter called the "Cig-a-Lite." Many accidents have occurred when the driver attempts to "light up" while driving at a high rate of speed. When he lights a match at night and holds it before his eyes for the few seconds necessary to light a cigarette, it is several seconds before his eyes again become accustomed to the darkness... In the few moments that his eyes are turned from the road, and his hands taken from the wheel, a serious accident could happen. With this unique cigarette dispenser and lighter many accidents are prevented as it is not necessary that the driver remove his eyes from the road. It saves the trouble of searching through his pockets for the pack and for a light as they are always neat container before his operations are necessary. A lighted cigarette. The coroner's inquest into the path of the pretty divorcee who is found slain in her home here tuesday, was to be continued to when six more witnesses were be interrogated. Davis gave an unsatisfactory count of his actions from 3 clock Saturday afternoon until on Sunday, during which time lice believe the wealthy widow was slain. While being questioned, the egro related how numerous "mysserious patients" of the slain ostemath called at the house and were immitted by Mrs. Wilkins at every journ in the night. The character of D. F. Tarpley, fullroad employee, who admitted being at the Wilkins home early saturday, also was assailed by the egro. Davis refused to say what as Tarplay's mission to the Wilkins' home. A rusty knife found near the unfilled body had been identied as Davis'. H. G. Wilkins of Willard, Ohio, brother of Dr. Wilkins, today allied to the defense of Charles Wilkins, another brother, who was hold following reports of a quarel with the doctor. "Our sister was driven insane by liquor and drugs," H. G. Wilkias declared, tearing the veil from the life of his sister to defend this brother. ASK INDEPENDENCE MANILA, March 22.—The American Democratic territorial convention adopted resolutions today calling upon the United States for the adoption of the following independence program: Declaration of intention to withdraw American forces. Recognition of Philippine independence when constitutional convention adopts constitution which in the president's opinion "can maintain government and adequately protect personal and property rights." This done, according to the program, treaties will be drawn up governing the future relations POSTAL WORKERS, SEEK MORE PAY A 25 per cent increase in wages to meet a 100 per cent rise in the cost of living—that's the condition the postal employees are facing today, according to one of them. Four years ago the boost in pay came, and then the men were assured that the cost of living would decline enough to make up the difference. But it didn't. During 1918 thousands of men resigned, and that's what induced the government to advance the general pay. Average living costs in Decenber last were 72.2 per cent higher than in 1913, when the rise seriously began. The employees estimate that they have suffered an average loss of $5,000 since 1913 thru deficient salaries. The postoffice expenses are paid for out of the revenues, so that employees can be accommodated without any larger or special appropriation. The unnecessarily low parcels post rates are chiefly responsible for the deficit. The efficiency and productivity of the Post Office Department has increased greatly during the past 10 years. The service is worth more. Every man and woman in Anaheim should immediately write to one or all of the following persons urging their support of House Bill number 4123; Pres. Calvin C. CANAL REJECTED WASHINGTON, March 22.—A proposed canal project in connection with the Colorado River development, aimed at irrigating 500,000 acres of land in southeastern Arizona, was rejected today by a special board of engineers in a report to the department of the interior. The promoters of the project estimated the cost at $290,000,000 but the engineers declared the cost would far exceed this amount and they condemned the whole undertaking as "inadvisable and unworthy of serious consideration." Light as they are always in the neat container before him. Three operations are necessary to secure a lighted cigarette. The first consists of pressing a lever that releases a trap dispensing a cigarette into the tray. The next step requires the pressing of another button on the opposite side of the container. This opens a valve in a pipe leading from the intake manifold which causes a suction through the cigarette. At the same time the valve is opened a small resistance coil gets red hot and lights the cigarette. All that is left for the motorist to do is to take it from the tray—evenly and well lighted. The entire operation requires but from 5 to 15 seconds' time. Aside from this "matchless" device, the Western Auto Supply Co. offer many accessories in the way of ash receivers, cigar lighters, cigarette and match cases for the motorist who likes to smoke when he drives.
