GOD DOCTRINE OF CHRISTIAN FAITH Dr. J. A. Geissinger spoke at the White Temple Sunday morning upon "Contending for the Faith." He said in part: Our Scripture this morning insists that there is a faith and that it must be contended for. That is that it is worthy of our loyalty and of every man's loyalty. What is that faith? The fundamentalists think they know. The Modernists think they know. The Roman Catholic would give you one answer. The High Churchmen another and the Dogmatic Theologian another. Most persons using this text identify the faith with the entire round of doctrine as it is popularly held today and are certain to slip in their own particular beliefs. The quick answer to all such persons is that this Scripture was spoken before the fall of Jerusalem. That is before the formulation of any of our creeds, even before the formulation of the so-called Apostles' Creed and long before any of our existing ecclesiasticalisms. It is rightly held that the faith does not refer to any doctrine at all, simple or complex. The Christian faith has not for its object any doctrine but God himself as He speaks and moves and shines in the soul of Christ. The apostle, the true Christian, never says; I know what I believe. But "I know whom I have believed." Christian faith is not in the region of the head, a belief held at the end of an argument. It is the commital of the soul. It is the venture of all on God. Donald Hankey said: "It is batting your life that there is a God and that He cares." It is believing on Chirst, not something about Christ. Still back of all this there is a sound of truth that speaks to us makes such truthfulness rational. The apostle says in Hebrews—"The great salvation began to be spoken by our Lord and the world to Himself. But we enter into Christianity only as by faith, by the venturing our whole being upon that deed of God, we appropriate the cross. So that in the last analysis Christian faith is more than a belief. It includes certain truths. But it ultimately an act of self-committal. It is the soul flinging itself into the bosom of God. So that the faith for which we are to contend is not gone doctrine. It is a way of life—Jesus' way. As Jude plainly says unless we go on from the great revelations of Christianity as given us by our Lord and illuminated by the Holy Spirit and vindicated in our experiences, unless we go on from these to the life of child-like trust in Christ, of Christ, we are clouds without water, trees without fruit, stars out of their orbits wandering aimlessly, and for us will be reserved only bitterness and the moistness of darkness. Let us welcome every help, ancient and modern, that makes this way of Christ clearer, that helps us to see that there is no other way. But then at the end we must walk in the way and not simply talk about it. At the end of the discussion Christ always says: "Go thou and do likewise." How shall we contend for this faith? By the appeal to reason. By the appeal to experience. By praying in the Holy Spirit-praying and following the light as it is given us. By keeping ourselves in the love of God. By building ourselves up in the fellowship of Christ. By patiently and lovingly trying to lead others into the deeper knowledge of God. Christianity, the Christian life, is a great and glorious way of life as we see it illustrated in the New Testament, especially in the great examples given us in gospel and as it is set forth freely in the lives of the more distinguished Christians. I mean those who have risen to great spiritual levels. Much has been done in the last few years to make the outstanding features of this life stand forth clearly and much effort has been It is the venture of all on God. Donald Hankey said: "It is betting your life that there is a God and that He cares." It is believing on Christ, not something about Christ. Still back of all this there is a brand of truth that speaks to us makes such truthfulness natural. The apostle says in Hebrews—"The great salvation began to be spoken by our Lord and was confirmed to us by those that heard Him." The gospel gives us the gospel. We are told of the first circle of Christians that they continued in the teachings of the apostles and Paul says that he preached to the Corinthians what he had received from the Lord. Those teachings, which the Holy Spirit was to illuminate and to bring home forcibly to the remembrance of those who would hear, made it clear that God was actually incarnate in Christ and that He was incarnate redemptively and that salvation comes by faith. So there is a good deal of wholesome theology back of the Christian act of trust. Only the teaching is a means to an end. It is secondary. God in Christ is primary. And we do not rise to the Christian level until we act on the teaching. We become Christians by venturing all on God as revealed in Christ. We may that Christianity comes to a focus in the cross. So it does. But we may also say that Christianity is the cross. It is God reconciling Christianity, the Christian life, is a great and glorious way of life as we see it illustrated in the New Testament, especially in the great examples given us in gospel and as it is set forth freely in the lives of the more distinguished Christians. I mean those who have risen to great spiritual levels. Much has been done in the last few years to make the outstanding features of this life stand forth clearly and much effort has been made by those who have refused to betray Christ in our own day. We Christians need to acquaint ourselves with these great examples and these interpretations of our faith that we may make it live and conquer in the world. The supreme hope of the world is in Christ and we must help men and women to see this and we must do our part both by our words and our deeds to make Christianity live. That is a great task. It is nothing little and sectarian. It is not any quibbling over texts. God has made the way so clear that any wayfailing man may see it. We need to grasp the heights and depths the lengths and breadth of Christianity and to think of it in a broad, free way and to live it with good-will and forbearance and sympathy that we may indeed re-commend Christ and his way to the world of our time. Such a task calls for patience, courage, brains, kindness, imagination, a sense of humor, a love for our fellows, a profound regard for truth, a passion for righteousness and an abounding love for God.
