NEW OAKLAND HOME FOR BUICK Another step in the institutional progress of the Howard Automobile Co. was announced by C.S. Howard, president of the big Buick distributing organization in California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. Ground has been broken for a new structure in Oakland to house the Howard Automobile Co. branch in that city, which, when completed, will be one of the most imposing motor car establishments in California. It’s floor space will be in excess of 56,000 square feet. The building is to be concrete. Every modern construction feature, which has been used in large motor car establishments, A unique ventilating system will be installed in the service department to take care of exhaust fumes and keep good air in constant circulation. The sale floor will extend across the entire front of the building and have a depth of 59 feet. Offices will be on both the first floor and on a mezzanine. Entrance to the service station will be from Twenty-eighth-st. On the second floor, new cars will be serviced and used cars will be reconditioned. Another idea which has been used in Howard Automobile Co. buildings in San Francisco and Los Angeles—the use of ramps, instead of elevators from one floor to another—will be part of the construction plan. The ramp to the shop and to the roof will be made wide enough to permit two cars passing and will be provided with safety controls. The new building is the third constructed within the last year on the Pacific coast to house Howard Automobile branches. A big home was completed in S. O. CHARTRES ST. STATION NO MORE Thursday night the Standard Oil Co.’s service station at Char-tres and North Los Angelesests was doing business as usual. Friday, almost before Anaheimers realized what was going on, the last vestige of the building had vanished, and a gang of men was at work, replacing the concrete sidewalks and curbs as they were before. The lease on the lot is expiring, and the company has one less station in the city. F. C. Rimpau, the owner, said that the lot would remain unimproved, at least for the present. Chemical Changes In Battery Unceasing The storage battery in an automobile is the one living thing that never rests even though the balance of the car may be idle. It is the life, the heart of the machine. This was the statement of A. Bevillard, of the Anaheim Ignition Depot, local Willard dealer, in discussing the proper care of this vital part of the automobile. “Electro-chemical change is taking place in the battery cells all the time, just as the human heart keeps on pumping during sleep. Especially during the winter months is it dangerous to neglect the heart of the motor car.” AT THE HOTEL VALENCIA P. T. Taylor, F. N. Carnahan, J. P. Pitt, J. Malick, I. L. Damsky, L. R. STUDEBAKER STOCK INCREASE PLANNED Directors of the Studebaker Corporation, South Bend, Ind., have called a special meeting of stockholders April 1 to approve an increase of capital from $75,000,000 stock of $100 par to 2,500,000 shares no par and to distribute two and one-half shares for each present share. The call for the meeting followed a special session of the directorate in South Bend. The stockholders will meet at Jersey City, N.J. It is proposed to place the new stock on a $40 basis. Immediately after the close of the meeting of the directors A. R. Erskine, president of the Studebaker Corporation, issued the following statement: “A special meeting of the stockholders of The Studebaker Corporation has been called at Jersey City, N.J., April 1, by the directors who held a special meeting at South Bend, to approve their recommendation that the charter of the corporation be amended to change the character of the outstanding common stock from $100 par value to $40 no par value, which would mean that present, common stockholders would receive two and one-half shares of new stock for each share of old stock now outstanding. “It is intended to increase the authorized common capital stock to 2,500,000 shares, although only 1,875,000 shares will be needed to retire the present outstanding common stock of 750,000 shares. The remaining $25,000 shares of new stock will not be issued at present.” “The object in reducing the stock to a $40 basis is to permit broader investment in it by Studebaker employees, dealers, and car owners, and generally to give it a wider distribution.” Under the present 10 per cent common dividend rate, each new share of common stock will receive dividends of $1 quarterly, or $4 per annum. “The new plan will become effective, provided it is approved” BATTERIES $13.50 "Friendly Service" "Efficient Service" GUARANTEED MAKE OF CAR Ford, Chevrolet, Buick Overland and Others Buick 6, Studebaker, Hupmobile, Chandler, Hudson and Others Dodge, Franklin and Others PREST-O-LITE Prices $20.00 $14.85 $24.55 $18.65 $30.00 $22.65 ROBT. To get the drivers together demanded no little diplomacy from President George Bentel. He opened up the bank roll and drew out a $15,000 purse for the event, $10,000 to go to the winner and $5000 to the loser. This is the greatest purse ever offered for a dirt track race in America. Besides the world's championship match race Sunday, eight other events will be on the program in Bentel's thrill bowl. Three of these will be for the motor bike riders who last Sunday provided the greatest thrills of the day. CALIF. HOTEL, FULLERTON Mrs. Kate D. Irving, Hollywood; F. Morrison, Venice; W. J. R. Schanhals, local distributor. The record is regarded as all the more striking because of the fact that it was made in the congested traffic of the city. The car, too, carried three passengers, including two official observers. Another handicap that developed was a stiff head wind. Throughout the country the new Willys-Knights have been setting records of economy in the use of both water, oil and fuel that have set new standards for cars of this class. "TIME IS MONEY" ESSEX SAVES TIME It has been said that "time is humanity's most precious asset." This is increasingly true as the demands of civilization require more and more of the individual in the community. Modern civilization rests upon a foundation of knowledge plus the efficiency gained from experience, and the automobile has contributed very largely to both knowledge and experience. A great broadening in the scope of the average human being's endeavors in life has taken place within the last ten years. With 15,000,000 automobiles in use in the United States alone, the whole population may receive the benefit of this increased outlook. The additional knowledge alone gained through the use of the automobile has more than paid for the original cost and the upkeep expense of operating them. "When it is considered that time is the only thing which any human being really has," said H. R. Grove, "we may forgive a man who mortgages his home in order on a greatly increased schedule for the ensuing year and decision was arrived at after study of national conditions." In three years he has been instrumental in building up Oakland popularity so that the production has increased from 20,000 cars a year to a proposed production of 75,000 for 1924. Hannum and Nephler will remain on the coast for a week or ten days, and while studying conditions, will also convey to the Oakland dealers here the policies and plans of the Oakland Motor Car company, explaining to them just what ideas they have in mind for the future of Oakland.
