RAPS SO. CALLIO
Wm. Sperber has received the following clipping from the Gwandaiqua (N. Y.) Messenger which shows how ready cast papers try to rap So. Calif.
After spending several months in Southern California, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Easton, accompanied their two sons, James, Jr., and William, returned to their home North Main-st yesterday. The trip to the coast last October, when combined business with pleasure was made by automobile, but the return trip was made by train the automobile being placed in carload shipment to Buffalo which is one of the splendid cities afforded tourists by the Calif. Auto club.
Both business and climate fine in California, which for progressiveness in developing resources, is setting an exam for the entire country, according to Mr. Easton.
"The popular conception of California," said Mr. Easton took "is that the entire state, or least most of it, is a semi-tropical garden of flowers, oranges and other vegetation. That is indirect. California is a great desert of sand and dry river beds. A very small portion of this desert has been reclaimed by irrigation, such sections there is an abundance of flowers and fruit."
"As Los Angeles, several years ago, at an expenditure of more than $20,000,000, which they seemed gross extravagance, made wise provision for a tremendous quantity of fresh water, brought by aqueduct hundreds of miles from the Sierra Nevada mountains, it practically monopolizes the water supply of South California and this meant its premacy as it traded water expansion by annexation of some outlying towns. It has been able to largely develop the country within a radius of 25 miles but outside of this area South California almost altogether remains a burning waterless desert without habitation."
PICTURE PORTRAYS UNDREAMED SIGHTS
Dode Rieco, sensational and daring dancer appearing in person with Burr Nickle in "The Land of Whispering Hope" at United Theatre.
The story of everyman's paradise, "The Land of Whispering Hope," a wonder photoplay, will be tonight's attraction at the United Theater. Every man, woman and child has dreamed of a land where fortune awaits him; a land where he can seek adventure and find riches.
Come then and journey with Burr Nickle from the sun-kissed known to the majority of people. It is something you have waited all your lifetime to see. It is a punch: it is a thrill; an enchantment spell of beauty and an ecstasy of hope. You will thrill over the many perils Burr Nickle encountered to give to the world a picture that is in a class so far superior to anything ever offered on the silver-sheet that all others fade into nothingness. You will acquaint hundreds of men from the Sierra Nevada mountains, it practically monopolize the water supply of South California and this meant its premacy as it traded water expansion by annexation of scraps of outlying towns. It has been able to largely develop the country within a radius of 25 miles but outside of this area South California almost altogether remains a burning waterless desert without habitation.
"Los Angeles is enjoying great boom. Thousands of earners are flocking there, believing that somewhere in or around Los Angeles is the 'promising land.' As a result, real estate promoters are unloading the sands of acres of what was formerly considered as waste land, the form of city lots at fabulous prices. It is said to be the greatest real estate boom in the world's history.
"California has no natural sources comparable to those New York state or of Ontario county. If they possessed a beautiful inland body of water such as Canandaigua lake or land such natural productivity as have in Ontario county, it would advertise these facts to the earth. Lacking such sources, it advertises sunshine sells off thousands of acres-of desert land.
"It certainly does have sunlight in abundance. It shone faithfully every day we were there, chady side of the street was aury on both Christmas and New Year's day. Nevertheless, the children eagerly looked forward their return east where they had to find an abundance of snow."
According to Mr. Easton, school and public buildings Southern California with splendid lighting and ventilated facilities, are a model for the tire country and even the smallest towns have school buildings which would be a credit to large cities of the east. The children are counted as California's greatest asset and nothing less good for them in the matter health and education.

Zenore Ulric "TIGER ROSE"
A WARNER BRIDGE CLASS OF THE SCREEN
"Tragedy has its place," agrees charming Zenore Ulric, heroine of "Tiger Rose." "Riki" and other successes, but I fear I would actually go out of my mind if called upon very often to play roles that call for too heavy acting.
"Not that I have a nervous temperament—I should say not! I am as healthy as any lumberjack—only it gets wearhome—this business of being a tragedy queen—and I like to play the way I feel."
Some of our motion picture stars can't bear to appear on the screen in anything that will not allow them to wear ravishing gowns or play a role that will rob them of dignity. I like to take my half down and romp—yes, actually romp through a picture.
"I haven't enjoyed anything in a long time more than the filming of my latest picture, 'Tiger Rose'; there was tragedy there, yes, but it was checkered by the fine alloy of comedy, and the combination gave me much pleasure."
