EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester Editor and Publisher DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS When over dizzy steeps we go, One soft hand blinds our eyes, The other leads us safe and slow— O Lore of God most wise! -Eliza Scudder WOMEN IN IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL POSTS Women in educational work are coming into great prominence. There are women state superintendents in twelve of the forty-eight stats. One-third of all county superintendents in the United States are women. Several large cities have women superintendents. Here in California the number of women prominent in educational posts is notable. They are uniformly successful. Women are demonstrably fitted for educational work in all grades. They have the talent, mentally. They have the tact. They have the patience. They have the character. They have the indefinable but potent faculty of getting along well in the situation, and yet diffusing an atmosphere of confidence and serenity among the pupils taking instruction from them. Women should be appreciated in education and should be compensated according to the intrinsic value of their services. Their service is exacting. It tries both mind and body. It demands a concentration of time, talent and effort which leaves no opportunity to make gains in lateral occupations. The teacher, to be successful, must teach, and do nothing else. That resigned feeling is becoming prevalent among members of the President's Cabinet. OPTIMISTIC STATUS IN BUSINESS Business and manufacturing are not slumping this Presidential year, as pessimists have predicted would be the case. Their service is exacting. OPTIMISTIC STATUS IN BUSINESS Business and manufacturing are not slumping this Presidential year, as pessimists have predicted would be the case. There is cheerful tone, according to the official publication of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Distinct progress has been shown in many lines of business and industry. There are some unsatisfactory features, it is true. But nothing is looming to foreshadow a period of depression. The general aspect is favorable. The people are optimistic and confident. They expect good times to persist. Their very expectation in this will help to bring it to pass. There is no tide of distrust and fearfulness running through the body politic. The economic psychology of the country is about all that could be desired. Blessings on those whose mission on earth is to put the "kind" in mankind. This is a more glorious winter for tourists in California than for ranchers. Illinois has a superabundance of trouble from its bloody Williamson county. That region is never pacified. They are playing a crude game of politics, in Congress, over the Teapot Dome scandal. As the old fellow neared the door his eye lighted upon an extraordinary looking instrument conspicuously placed upon a counter. The venerable negro paused for several moments to gaze in open-mouthed wonder at this thing, the like of which he had never seen before. After a long struggle with his curiosity he was vanquished. Turning to the optician, he asked: "What is it, boss?" "That is an ophthalmometer," replied the optician in his gravest manner. "Sho," muttered the old man to himself, as he backed out of the door, his eye still fastened upon the curious-looking thing on the counter. "Sho, dat's what I was afeared it was!" A quaint story is told to exemplify the pride that every man should take in the work by which he makes a living: Two street sweepers, seated on a curbstone, were discussing a comrade who had died the day before. "Bill certainly was a good sweeper," said one. "Y-e-s," conceded the other, thoughtfully. "But don't you think he will be a little weak around the gills." Large families, the report shows, are still very common in this state. During the past year 1125 California mothers put the number of their offspring over the ten mark. The largest California family has twenty-three members. Two mothers gave birth to their twenty-second child; two to their nineteenth; seven to their eighteenth; nine to their seventeenth; eighteen to their sixteenth; thirty-one to their fifteenth; three to their fourteenth; 115 to their thirteenth; 183 to their twelfth; 276 to their eleventh; and 428 to their tenth. Seven hundred and fifty sets of twins arrived in California during 1923. Great industries, fine harbors, splendid highways, and all that are wonderful assets to a state or nation. But the greatest of all our industries is the home industry—where are produced our successors who will some day pilot the course of the world in this and all other industries. To put it plainly, if is babies, and more babies, that make the world go around—otherwise it would have no excuse for existence. The quality of our new citizens is of course more important than mere quantity—but we must have quantity to work on in order to get quality.
