SPRING SHORTAGE WORSE THAN EVER With spring now close at hand, automobile dealers handling cars of standard make are facing a demand that from every indication will eclipse any previous shortage in the history of the automobile industry. "Practically every spring finds the automobile dealer body unable to meet the demand for immediate delivery," said E. H. McCarty, general sales manager of the Nash Motors Co. "The Nash retail selling organization, at this time, is carrying on its books more unfilled retail orders for spring delivery than at any time since this company was established." At the beginning of the year, Mr. Nash expressed the belief that good business generally would prevail throughout the first half of the year with favorable indications for the latter half also. This correction is being borne out by reports on many great industries aside from automobile manufacturing. Unfilled orders on the books of the Steel Corporation as of January 31 show an increase of 353,090 tons, the piano manufacturing industry is experiencing one of the heaviest demands in history, the hide and leather market is emerging from a lengthy period of liquidation. Shoe manufacturers are busy and a tabulation of building permits issued in a group of 262 major cities shows the largest January volume known. Sales of Nash cars at automobiles shows held so far this season throughout the country are heavier by a wide margin than ever before in the history of the company. Reports received by the factory from distributors and dealers at points where shows have been held show in some instances of 200 and 300 per cent in show sales. Russian caviar is again to grace America's board, for a revival of the manufacture and export of this delicacy, which during the war and Russian revolution suffered practically complete collapse, is to be undertaken. French agreements with the soviet government enable that country to prepare caviar on the Volga. BALLOON TIRES PUT ON DISPLAY The balloon tire is here, and you don't need different rims for them. S. R. Walter, exclusive distributor of the General and Kelly Springfield tires, is displaying several sizes of the new comfort-bringing casing in the General. For years the company made what it called the Jumbo cord in the 30 by 3½ size, for which a pressure of 30 pounds was recommended, or half the usual amount. Now this tire with certain changes is being offered still. Even admitting that the balloon tire is an experiment, say Walter's men, admitting that it may possibly not be as durable as the old type of tire—and this isn't true of the General at least—the saving in the car by reason of less vibration more than makes up for the loss on the tire. OAKLAND OFFICIAL SCORES AUTO TAX Every man who owns a motor car and every man in the auto trade should protest for the repeal of the discriminatory tax on automotive products. W. R. Tracy, assistant sales-manager of the Oakland Motor Car Co., thus urges a real fight by the 15,000,000 owners who have been ignored in the tentative schedule of the house ways and means committee which proposes to do away with the special war-time levies on bowling alleys and billiard tables; all sorts of amusement tickets up to 50 cents, jewelry and other items while motor cars, trucks and accessories are considered luxuries. "The Mountain Springs grade cut of Imperial Valley is considered quite steep, but you will get an idea of the power of the new six when I tell you that we were never out of high gear at any time from the valley, until we got to San Diego. "We averaged 21 miles to the gallon of gasoline and I outside of one tire change, we didn't have to stop once on account of the car.
