FRANTIC EFFORTS TO SAVE SAILORS VICTORIA, B. C., Feb. 28.—After an anxious night due to the high seas prevailing, the rescue fleet returned to the scene of the wreck of the Norwegian steamship Tatjana, ashore on Village Island on the west coast of Vancouver Island, hopeful of taking off Captain Morvig and 20 other officers and men still aboard. Seven men were rescued last night before darkness shut in and high seas forced the rescue fleet to stand off for the night. A heavy southeast gale blew throut the night and it was feared that the high seas might shake loose the nose of the Tatjana from the rocks where she was held by the crash. Little hope was held out for those on board should this occur. The U. S. S. Snohomish, H. M. S. Armentieres, the salvage steamer Tees and the Bamfield motor lifeboat are all at the scene. The Tatjana crashed early yesterday but the immediate flooding of her engine room prevented more than one radio distress signal being sent out. The rescue ships, as a result, searched most of the day before finding the ship. Heavy seas then hindered the rescue work. The Tatjana was inbound from the Orient to Seattle when she crashed on the roks half a mile from the point on which the Tuscan Prince came to grief last February. Captain Morvig had been unable to get his bearings for three days and missed the entrance to NEXT PRESIDENT OF NICARAGUA IS KNOWN IN U. S.
