UNION DISCOVERS
4TH OIL FIELD
By Ellwood J. Munger
When the Rosecrans well at Athens on the Hill shot oil into the crown block a few days ago the Union Oil Co. of Calif. had discovered another oil field and by the discovery has become the greatest oil field finder in the state, having to its credit four fields.
In connection with the opening of the new field two miles northwest of Compton it is interesting to note that there is an interesting historic background to the Rosecrans area. The promising geological features in this district were first recognized by F. A. Starke, prominent California geologist, who in his capacity as chief geologist for the Union Oil Co. of Delaware, recommended the leasing of some 300 acres for development. As a result, the Union Oil of Delaware, under its subsidiary, the Eddystone Co., in 1919 acquired leases on the entire Rosecrans and O'Dea properties and all other small pieces surrounding the juncture of Main-st. and Rosecrans-ave. Under the direction of Dr. Starke two wells were drilled by the Eddystone Oil Corp. in 1920 and 21 immediately to the west of and within 100 yards of the present Rosecrans well of the Union Oil Co. of Calif. Well No. 1 was abandoned on account of mechanical difficulties at 3257 feet. After the abandonment of No. 1 the rig was skidded 115 feet and another attempt made.
Early in 1922 the Union Oil of Delaware and all its subsidiaries were taken over by the Shell Co. of Calif. and with the No. 2 well then drilling at 2800 feet the BREA NEWS

ALLEGED FUGITIVE HELD IN OLD CASE
ROSEBURG, Ore., Feb. 27.—E. W. Franklin, Reedsport pool room proprietor, was brought here today by Sheriff Starmer following his arrest as George Meadows, alleged fugitive from justice in Alabama, where Meadows in 1905 was indicted for the murder of William Eaton.
Franklin, according to Starmer, admits that his name was formerly Meadows, but claimed he left Driston, Ala., 19 years ago to avoid being a witness in the case.
He told the sheriff that he might waive extradition and return, confident he could clear the matter up.
Franklin, 50, married here four years ago and has two children. He is said to have accumulated $30,000 or $40,000 since coming to Oregon.
