THWART AUTO THIEVES BY
FEDERAL ACT
National registration of automobiles to prevent thefts is
vacated, from time to time. Sheriff Traeger of Los Angeles
unty urges adoption of this method of thwarting the startling
number of clever thieves.
Loss of cars by thefts, in the state of California, amounts
to many millions of dollars annually. Not only is this a deplorable thing, economically, but it reacts hurtfully upon the
community as to the moral turpitude that accompanies the
theft of cars. It is no uncommon thing for a series of bold
robberies to be committed in a stolen car, culminating, in
many cases, in the murder of some person or persons. The
stolen car and the bloody crime go hand in hand, so to speak,
in many instances. Stop the thefts, and much of the shocking
crime which stigmatizes this state would be stopped.
The vast majority of men in public life are honest and
incorruptible. Indeed, the dishonest, corrupt men are in the
minority.

in many instances. Stop the thefts, and much of the shocking crime which stigmatizes this state would be stopped.

SCHOOLS VOTED GREAT SUMS TO IMPROVE
California goes strongly on school betterments. Millions of dollars is voted annually in this state to build new schools, to add to equipment, or to expand school playgrounds.
Californians will vote for schools when they turn down proposed bond issues for any other form of improvement. They want the best in educational accommodations for their children. It is to the credit of California that its cities and towns adorn themselves with handsome, commodious school buildings. The architecture of school structures is striking. It is diverse, too. Spanish and Moorish types are found frequently.
It is gratifying that the requirements of the several communities in the state are met so well in the matter of school buildings and facilities. Equally important is it that teachers be paid well, and that instructors of the best type be employed in the schools. This should not be neglected. It is essential to success of school work that the best possible talent be put into the schoolrooms to teach. Talented teachers should be paid well. Salaries of teachers should be commensurate with compensation in other vocations and professions.
Honesty is the all-important thing in government.
This country must not be half “wet” and half “dry.”
California has reason to thank God for the quality of the men and women who pioneered this state.
Detraction in politics should spell subtraction of votes from the party or candidate indulging in that kind of tactics.
Traffic slaughters, through reckless driving. The number of preventable deaths in traffic is frightful.
Political party platforms this year must be seasoned with sincerity if they are to command the confidence and support of the public.

ABE MARTIN
ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT
WE HAVE TO BE SKEPTICAL
It seems to be common supposition that the big business men of New York are the superiors of business out in the "provinces."
After reading the New York papers with their stories of little boys being intrusted to carry hundreds of thousands of dollars through the streets, and their stories about big business men and their loves and love letters, we doubt it.
Slang has oozed into the symphony orchestra, too. A friend of ours who plays a "tin whistle" in an orchestra supplies us with the following vocabulary:
VIOLIN—Fiddle. Instruments of small value referred to as a Woolworth Strad.
VIOLA—Fiddle's big brother.
CELLO—Wooden saxophone.
SAXOPHONE—Tin cello.
DOUBLE-BASS—Dog house.
PICCOLO—Tin whistle.
FLUTE—Fife.
CLARINET—Swine-ette. Sometimes the goosetone.
FRENCH HORN—Twenty-four feet of pipe with a cramp.
TRUMPET—Rag horn.
TROMBONE—Slip horn.
BASSOON—Fagot.
TUBA—Oom-pah.
THE.TYMPANI—Soup kettles.
PERCUSSION SECTION—The kitchen.
The English horn has no nickname, because it is neither English nor a horn.

DINNER STORIES
Joseph Jefferson used to say that during his long stage career he was never associated with anyone showing undue familiarity except one individual named Bagley, his property man for several seasons. The man was valuable in his way, and so Mr. Jefferson tolerated his disagreeable manners until one night in Baltimore.
The property man got very drunk in the afternoon, and in the evening paid his way into a gallery seat. Mr. Jefferson was playing "Rip Van Winkle." The angry Gretchen had just driven poor destitute Rip from the cottage, when Rip turned, and, with a world of pathos, asked:
"Den I haf no interest in der house."
The theater was deathly still, the audience half in tears, when Bagley's cracked voice was heard in response: "Only 80 per cent. Joe, old boy; only 80 per cent."
"Mother," said George, as he presented an office chum who had come to spend Saturday afternoon with him, "this is my friend, Mr. Specknoodle."
George's mother was rather deaf.
"I'm sorry," she said, "but I didn't quite catch the name."
"My friend, Mr. Specknoodle!" shouted George.
"I'm sorry," said his mother, "but I can't hear distinctly."
"Specknoodle!" George fairly bellowed.
"I'm afraid it's no use," said the old lady, as she shook her head. "It sounds just like 'Specknoodle' to me."

THE WOMAN OF IT
Mme. Marguerite Fahmy, the Frenchwoman who murdered the Egyptian prince who was her husband and got a lot of sobs from palpitating readers of the scandal-monging sheets by her sobbing story of the humiliations a western woman must undergo when she marries an eastern man, is now engaged to marry a cousin of the man she killed.
The winner of the Box peace plan prize, Dr. Levermore, won't tell what he did with the $50,000 award. It has been suggested in more than one quarter that maybe he invested in munitions factory stock.

Model creameries located in the finest dairying districts; careful selection and testing of cream; modern equipment; improved churning methods;
—for years, these things had made Golden State, "high score" butter—superior-quality butter.
But we wanted to add one final touch of perfection—so we eliminated the cutting and wrapping of the dainty quarters by hand.
The remarkable machine illustrated above—an exclusive Golden State invention—represents the greatest forward step in butter-making in recent years. It adds just one more to the many reasons why you can always depend upon Golden State.
At your grocer's! You'll find it pays to insist.
