"LEFT HANDED"
MERRY XMAS
HARRISBURG, Feb. 25.—The mayor of York wished the mayor of Harrisburg a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, but he did it in such an unusual and unofficial way it didn't become known until quite some time after the holiday season. Mayor Hoverter of Harrisburg, kept the greeting, along with the others he received, a purely personal matter, but decided later it was so good he had to show it to his friends.
This is what Mayor Ephraim Smyser Hugentugler of York wrote to Mayor George A. Hoerter:
"Thirty years ago, I remember when eggs were three dozen for 25c, butter 10c a pound, milk 5c a quart, the butcher gave away liver and treated the kids with bologna; the hired gird received two dollars a week and did the wrushin'. Women did not powder and paint (in public), smoke, vote, play poker or shake the shimmie."
"Men wore whiskers and boots, chewed tobacco, spat on the sidewalk and cussed. Beer was 5c, and the lunch was free. Laborers worked 10 hours a day and never went on strike. No tips were given to waiters and the hat check graft was unknown. A kerosene hanging lamp and a stereoscope in the parlor were luxuries.
"No one was ever operated on or appendicitis or stole monkey glands. Microbes were unheard off; folks lived to be a good old age and every year waiked miles to wish their friends—a Merry Christmas."
"Today, you know, everybody rides in autos, or flies, plays golf, shoots craps, plays the piano with FOR LEASE—Corner lot, suitable for filling station; reasonable rent; close in. Box 90-M, care Plain Dealer.

TWO JONES ARE ROBBERY VICTIMS
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 25.—Police officials for the moment today were inclined to think someone was playing a practical joke on them, when two men, each giving the name of Jones, appeared almost simultaneously and declared they had been robbed.

America will not have Bob McAllister, former national 100-yard sprint champion, as one of its representatives in the coming Olympic games. Mag has quit the game, he says, to devote his time to cultivating his tenor voice. He is an unusually good tenor, 'tis said. Another triumph for art.
