EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester . . . Editor and Publisher STATE'S POPULATION IS BEYOND 4,000,000 That California's population is now well beyond 4,000,000 is the estimate of L. E. Ross, director of the State Bureau of Vital Statistics. The figures for last June were 3,918,239, and it is estimated that the population increase since then has been nearly 100,000. With its present rate of growth maintained, California should have a total population of well beyond 5,000,000 by the 1930 census. Growth along this line is steady and consistent. No condition or contingency which can be foreseen could interfere seriously with the populational growth of this state. Considering the fact that California now has 4,000,000 population and yet has such immense areas of undeveloped lands, the enormousness of this state's resources and possibilities is appreciated. California, through a wise course of conservation and development of resources, should support a population of 25, 000,000. This state is in no danger of overcrowding at present. There is an empire within this state that has not been developed. There are homes for millions—homes which are yet to be built. There are avenues of development which have not yet been opened. There are treasures as yet untouched. California's development will continue to be the wonder of the world. Of all human bores, the egotist who must always be flattered, is the most unsufferable. The full measure of Woodrow Wilson's greatness impresses the world, now that he is gone. He is given superlative tributes from many high sources. MR. HARDING'S NAME IS WITHOUT SULLY The name of Warren G. Harding was dragged into the mire of vicious gossip without warrant. This is obvious from the sworn testimony of Frank A. Vanderlip. The imminations made by Mr. Vanderlip in a public speech in regard to the sale of the Marion Star were admitted by Mr. Vanderlip, which he himself did MR. HARDING'S NAME IS WITHOUT SULLY The name of Warren G. Harding was dragged into the mire of vicious gossip without warrant. This is obvious from the sworn testimony of Frank A. Vanderlip. The inquiries made by Mr. Vanderlip in a public speech in regard to the sale of the Marion Star were admitted by Mr. Vanderlip, under oath, to have been mere rumors which he himself did not believe. He said that he had no facts to support the rumors and had made no attempts to verify them. Meanwhile, full and complete statement of the facts surrounding the purchase of the Ohio newspaper, in which Mr. Harding owned the majority of stock, was made, showing that the price paid for the Marion Star was not excessive and that two personal friends of Mr. Harding, who are successful Ohio publishers, made the purchase in a perfectly legitimate and unsuspicious way. The price paid was $880,000, and not $550,000, as the idle rumors had it. Experts say that the Marion Star is worth all that was paid for it and the deal has every appearance of being straightaway business. Warren G. Harding, who died in the Presidency, held the respect, confidence and affectionate esteem of the American people. Not even his bitterest political enemies doubted his honesty and keen sense of honor. His name needs no defense before his countrymen and before the world. But it is a burning shame and an outrage that his name should be bandled about in vicious gossip, and it is deplorable that any person of character and influence would repeat these slanders. It is to be hoped that the whole miserable besmirching will be dropped now. Too much poisonous, groundless gossip floating around the country. Too many innocent persons wantonly assailed. California, to be safe, must fortify itself, in the matter of adequacy of water supply, against a series of dry seasons, such as have been experienced in recent years. It would be consummate and dangerous folly for this state to go on, ignoring the vital need of conserving water supply. What is Butterkrisp? ARE YOU GOING EUROP PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillen) A widower with money to burn attracts an old flame. The expression, "Forging to the front," now commonly refers to the front page. A dollar is worth its face value in every corner of the world except at home. A hick town is a place where culture consists in remembering the last words of famous men. WINNER STORIES The bazaar was in full swing when a young man strolled around the stalls. He had no intention of buying anything. As he passed a tastefully decorated stall the pretty saleswoman detained him. "Won't you buy a cigarette holder?" she asked. "No, thank you; I don't smoke," was the curt reply. "Or a penwloper worked by my own hands?" "I don't write." "Then do have this nice box of chocolates." "I don't eat sweets." The young woman's patience was exhausted. "Sir," she said, grimly, "will you buy this box of soap?" The young man paid up. Turbuculosis is acquired in childhood. If our natural defenses do not overcome it immediately, development is deferred until we reach young adult life. ABE MARTIN COMMENTS OF THE PRESS What Editors Are Saying TRAGEDIES FROM AUTOS GHASTLY—Sacramento Union One thousand three hundred twenty deaths; over 31,000 injuries. It sounds like the result of a battle, but it is not. It is merely the record of the automobile in California for the year 1928. The trouble is not to any large extent with the law, or even deficiencies in its enforcement. No law can be so administered as to protect everyone on the highways under all conditions. These frightful figures are a matter of individual responsibility and for individual thought. In the hands of each driver of an automobile lies the remedy. As in most of the larger issues of life, the choice is perfectly free. He can be a fool and a public menace or he can be the other thing. He cannot be compelled to be either. The compulsion must come from within himself, from his own common sense and respect for the safety of others. It is about time that motorists began to apply such a compulsion. It is intolerable that we should go on forever, maintaining enough people to make a good sized city every year and killing enough to make a village—all for what?
