Haugdahl to Be At L. A. Tomorrow
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23.—Sig Haugdahl, world’s speed king, holder of the 180-miles-per-hour mark, the greatest speed at which human has traveled over the earth, is coming to Ascot Speedway tomorrow with his "Wonder Car" which he used in the perilous drive. The sheer audacity of the daring European in using the huge car on a comparatively small course like Ascot has earned for him the sobriquet of "The Mad Mullah of the Speedways." Hacing fans declare that Haugdahl's driving represents the supreme limit of daring and that no such sight as is presented when he hurles his car almost sidewise around the treacherous turns of a speedway, has been witnessed on an auto race course. That the famous Norwegian will prove a powerful magnet at Ascot is not doubted by anyone who has seen the huge crowd drawn to Ascot on each of the five Sunnays at Beverly Hills.

After qualifying on the Ascot track at 34 seconds for the eight laps, Ed Jensen, Anaheim boy and formerly in the U.S. aviation service, will compete with leading speed demons of the country tomorrow in a specially equipped Ford.
Jensen, with the aid of Barton Glooth's machine shop, put on a Western Auto Supply Rajo eight-cylinder head, specially designed for racing cars, with a new counter balance crankshaft to help withstand the strain, Bosch magneto, Cantscore pistons, etc.
When he qualified on the track a couple of weeks ago, he drew a place next to Ralph DePalma, and if his car hadn't refused to start, might have won a place. He won his three A's at San Luis Obispo last summer.
The Ascot track's record is only about 24 seconds for the eight laps. Jensen has traveled better than 90 miles per hour.
He intends to enter several different events tomorrow.
There is much turmoil and distress in the world news these days. One has to look beneath the surface of news reports to find brighter, better things. DODGE CAR SALES NOT AT ALL DULL
Charley Mann, local distributor of Dodge cars, hasn't found sales dull.
In the week ending Thursday Mann reports these sales: Business sedan to Maurice Martenet; Jr.; coupe to Charlie Belle; coupe to Sam Kraemer, Jr., and business sedan to H.A. Denton of Placentia. Purchasers of used cars were O.M. Parks of Fullerton; H.A. Phillips of Los Angeles, and Robert F. Stahler.

Three carloads of Oakland cars arrived this week, Harry L. Turton, local distributor, announced. Ten of them were tourings and the rest closed cars.
All models are available, and prospects will not be kept waiting.

Numerous complaints that the provisions of the California Vehicle Act are not observed by motorists passing other cars on the road are rechristened the Auto Club So Calif. Not only are these drivers who have had narrow escapes from passing motorists but they come from drivers who have been arrested and fined for not observing the law in passing other vehicles on the open road.
Confusion seems to exist in the minds of motorists on this point. The state law says that any vehicle overtaking another vehicle shall pass at least two feet to the left thereof, and shall not again be driven to the right side of the highway until reasonably clear of such overtaken vehicle.
The motorist intending to pass a vehicle on the highway must give the car in front proper warning.
The driver of a vehicle being overtaken is expected to give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle. He shall not increase his speed to avoid being overtaken.
It is permissible to pass only when no other vehicle is approaching within 200 feet. This applies when passing another car requires the motorist to go beyond the middle of the highway. If the roadbed is wide enough to permit a vehicle to pass another car without going over the center of the highway, the 300 feet requirement does not hold.
These provisions of the California Vehicle Act are like others; their proper observance requires judgment and good sense of the motorist.
Lack of Patrols Responsible, Says Chief W. H. Marsh
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 23. Violations of the motor vehicle laws are increasing at an alarming rate, all over the state. Will H. Marsh, chief of the division of motor vehicles, declared here after returning from a trip through the San Joaquin valley and other points.
"In driving from Fresno to Sacramento I counted hundreds of violators," said Marsh. "These violations ranged from speeding and reckless driving down to illegible number plates. I saw scores of cars with faulty headlights, plates attached irregularly, cars with only one plate, some without plates, drivers disregarding signals, drivers failing to give signals and drivers violating the most common rules of the road. There seems to be a general laxness and a widespread disregard of the law. This, in my opinion, is due to the fact that the highways are without patrols and will only be remedied when the ones legal complexities, resulting from the non-payment of wages of traffic officers, are cleared. Meantime a campaign of public education is needed in California to teach motorists that it is their duty to obey the law."
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 23. State motor vehicle inspectors, acting under orders of Will H. Marsh, chief of the state division, has begun to place tags on all cars found without new license plates as a reminder to owners to secure new licenses. License fees not paid before March 1 become delinquent and owners will have to pay double. Cars not having the old registration certificate are not being tagged as the owners of such automobiles are presumed to have made application and to be waiting for new plates. If you have not secured your new plates, mail $3 and your old registration certificate to Sacramento at once or present them at a branch office.
If you are the owner of a car used for transporting property or carrying passengers for hire you must pay according to weight and must forward a weight certificate with your application.
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 23. Substitute plates in lieu of plates that have been lost will not be issued this year, according to announcement by the division of motor vehicles. A red card, instead, will be issued the owner and a pair of plates of the same number as those lost will be ordered. This ruling has been made because the certificate of ownership is often in the hands of legal owners some distance from the registered owner and the issuance of plates...

Highway Commission Declares Funds Now Are Nearly Exhausted
To the People of California;
The highways of the state belong to the people and must be paid for by the people. The time is not far distant when the problem of financing state highway construction in California must be met squarely and solved in accordance with sound business principles.
There must be general appreciation of this fact, followed by action. If construction is to continue.
Raising of revenue is not a function of the state highway commission. It is the business of the legislature and the people. The highway commission and the state highway engineer wish to say that they have not advocated, and are not now seeking to have enacted any particular scheme of taxation. We are not proposing any plan and have no plan to propose.
The last legislature, realizing an inevitable situation, provided for the appointment of a special advisory committee to investigate the state highway situation and make recommendations to the 1925 section. The appointment of this committee was recently announced by the governor.
The preparing of a financing plan for future state highway work is one of the principal duties of the committee. In view of the task to be undertaken by this advisory board, the commission and the state highway engineer have refrained from initiating (Continued on Page Two)
N. M. A. PLANS BIG REFORM PROGRAM
The National Motorists' Ass'n, which convened recently at Washington, D.C., will function this year as the largest body of auto owners in the world, says the Chevrolet Review for March, which has just appeared.
In the course of the program it was pointed out: That internal revenue receipts from auto sources were more than double the annual expenditure of the federal government on good roads. The convention went on record as opposing waste in the expenditure of public road funds; adopted a national slogan, "Highways Safe for Traffic, Not Traffic Safe for Highways"; favored reciprocity among clubs in service; appointed a committee to work to abolish grade crossings; appointed a committee to look into the use of highways by trucks and other commercial vehicles; decided to spend more time working out legislative problems affecting motorists; adopted the policy of uniform signs and emblems; went on record in favor of a north-south highway from Washington, D.C., to Florida; made plans to push uniform bill of sale and title registration laws to prevent thefts of cars; named a committee to work on an emergency mechanical and towing service; made plans to perfect the technique of the organization and endorsed the findings and recommendations of the recent convention in Cleveland of auto club executives for improvement of the service rendered by clubs.

The Cadillac Garage Co. hopes to get into its new garage and showrooms on South Los Angeles, adjoining the Public garage, or about April 1. The company's handsome new $15,000 building will have a salesroom 38 and shop 48 by 92. The building will constitute one more up toward the creation of an important retail district south of roadway and Los Angeles.
If business continues at the present rate, five men can be even steady employment, said Branch Manager M. B. Lacy—all them living in Anaheim.
The local plant will relieve the demands on the Santa Ana one. The shop will be completely equipped for the repair of Cadillacs in particular and passenger cars in general.
The line of Cadillacs has been supplemented by two new body types, the seven-passenger sedan and four-passenger Victoria coupe, making 12 body types all sold.

With balloon tires enjoying an unusual interest from the motor-ing public, the president and general manager of a well known motor car company comes forward and sheds some interesting light on the Balloon Tire situation. He holds the distinction of being the first manufacturer in the country to adopt balloon tires as regular and standard equipment. He has tested them under practically every condition and has arrived at some very definite conclusions as regard these tires.
"While I am more than convinced of the practicability and serviceability of balloon tires, not only from a comfort standpoint, but an economic standpoint as well, I know that the best results cannot be obtained from this latest product of our tire manufacturers unless the car is designed to carry balloon tires.
"Motorists should not make the mistake of simply getting a car with balloon tires for the tire's sake, but should find out definitely if certain fundamental rules of engineering have been compiled with before they purchase the car.
