C. C. SECRETARY
TALKS TO LIONS
The importance of holding the confidence of the ether fellow was stressed by Secretary George W. Reid of the C. C. in a speech before the local Lions' club today at the weekly funcheon.
Whether in personal city or national life, such confidence is necessary, Reid urged.
To maintain this confidence, one must adopt and practice high minded principles.
The speaker reviewed part of the life of Washington, the father of his country, as a noble example to Americans generally.
Accustomed to hearing Reid emphasize mainly the commercial aspect of things, the Lions saw a new side of the Secretary revealed as one member put it.
The gathering was largely a business session and little or no action on outside matters was taken.
ASK FUNDS FOR WARSHIP REPAIRS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 22.—Congress probably will be asked to appropriate additional funds for repairs on the four battleships which have been ordered out of commission by Secretary Denby, it was learned at the navy department today.
Preliminary estimates indicate that it will be necessary to spend on each ship more than the $200,-000 limit set by congress.
POLICE ORDERED
TO SHOOT TO KILL
Two Anaheim policemen, armed to the teeth, started on a diligent search with orders to shoot to kill.
The occasion of this order was the chargrin of Chief Monay at having been "made a monkey of" by the monkey which recently escaped from the Golden Brothers Circus, and activities of said "monk" in trying to bite children.
The police have chased the monkey without success all week and now they have decided upon its execution at the first place they are able to find it.
The monk was observed on Melrose at this morning.
REVIEW SENTENCES
LEAVENWORTH, Kan., Feb. 22.—Special investigators from the war department today began giving 177 service men serving military sentences a re-hearing.
Major F. R. Ross and Major James Stanfield will communicate their findings to Secretary of War Weeks, who will decide whether the men must remain in prison longer.
The numerous cases will be considered individually.
DOCK WORKERS IN PRANCE ON STRIKE
CHERBOURG, Feb. 22.—French dock workers went on strike today, demanding a wage increase.
They have been getting 14 francs daily but want 50.
(Note)—At the present rate of exchange 14 francs is approximately 57¢ in U.S. money.
