Joseph Ruggles Wilson, father of the late ex-president Wilson, was at one time pastor of the historic Hill (Presbyterian) church, near here. The old house in which the former president's father lived while serving the Hill congregation is still standing. Woodrow Wilson's father graduated from Jefferson College here in 1844, and after completing his theological course at Princeton he became pastor of the Chartlers (Hill). Presbyterian church, one mile east of this city. This was his first charge, and he was located there for three years, from 1848 to 1851. At the same time he was professor of rhetoric in Jefferson College. After leaving this vicinity, Rev. Joseph Wilson went to Handen-Sidney College. In 1855 he went to Staunton, Va., to become pastor of the Presbyterian church, where Woodrow Wilson was born December 28, the same year. Dr. Joseph Wilson was a native of Steubenville, Ohio, and his wife was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Thomas Woodrow, for whom Woodrow, their firstborn, was named. While Mr. Wilson was President he learned that the old side-saddle which his mother used while she lived at Canonsburg was still in possession of one of the members of the congregation. He expressed a desire to possess it, and the owner, a Mr. Lyons, sent it to him. The Hill church is one of the oldest and most historic west of the Allegheny Mountains. It was founded in pioneer times by Dr. John McMillan, founder of Jefferson College, at Canonsburg, and a pioneer educator in Western Penn. KILLS 500 RATTLERS IN NINE YEARS LUSK; Wyo., Feb. 20.—Mrs. Huston Sowers, who runs a farm near here, declares her property must be Utopia for rattlesnakes. Beseeching help from the office of the state biological survey. Mrs. Sowers declared that 500 rattlesnakes have been killed on her farm during the last nine years, but that the rattlesnake population seems to be on the increase, notwithstanding. "We have so many rattlesnakes here," Mrs. Sowers complained, "that whenever I hear a hen cackle I have to run to her nest to get the egg before a snake swallows it." Plans are under way by the biological survey to start an intensive campaign against the rattlers. WOULD THEY DO IT? PHOENIX, Feb. 20.—A federal law requiring every resident of the United States who is not a citizen to register, is the idea advanced by A.E. Spurgeon, district immigration officer. Discussing his proposed measure, Spurgeon said: "It is plain to see that under this system we would have no difficulty in making our property offering is slipping fast." NO POOR IN LAKE, NO REICH MAY SWIM CHICAGO, Feb. 20.—When Edward Zipf became chief of police of the expensive suburb of Wilmette, he swore to uphold the rights of the common people with considerable zip. When the days grew hot flocks of steaming common people living on the fringes of Wilmette got in the habit of going swimming in Lake Michigan, which proved to be quite annoying to the more expensive residents along the waterfront. The lake shore inhabitants forbade the public to go in swimming, claiming that the beaches were private property and must not be trespassed upon. Then the owners of the beach had the whole thing to themselves for several days. Now Eddie Zipf is no keggie-head. He knew the lake was public property, more or less. So he forbade the rich people to go in swimming, since they wouldn't let the poorer do so. What's more, he stationed policemen there to see that the order was enforced. Now the beacues are left to the exclusive enjoyment of the sand fleas and water files. DEMONSTRATION AT FULLERTON SCHOOL A special program has been arranged for the Fullerton Grammar School P.T. A. meeting Wednesday evening: Americanization — Field of Glory, grammar school orchestra, directed by Miss Rye; Mount Vernon Bells, community song; Tumbling Stunts, boys of physical training department; Girls Glee club, directed by Miss Holloway presentation of athletic letter by Mr. Marcy; Boys' Glee club, directed by Mr. Mock; "I Love You, California" (illustrated), by school. Spurgeon, district immigration officer. Discuss his proposed measure, Spurgeon said: "It is plain to see that under this system we would have no difficulty in weeding out the illicit immigrant, the smuggled Oriental and the apestle of desrction who has found his devious way to America to preach the downfall of American institutions. The alien, unable to produce his identification card would be given a hearing, and if after a fair and impartial investigation, he was unable to establish his right to be in the United States, he summarily could be deported." AUCTION HOUSE In the presence of a sizable crowd, J. D. Martin, auctioneer, yesterday sold a 5-room house for M. O. Hensley on West La Verne-st. The place brought considerably less than what it was really worth, according to friends of Hensley. This is the second house auction that has taken place here. LEGION LUNCHEON American Legion and Auxiliary last night held business meetings, after which the auxiliary served a luncheon to the legion and presented an impromptu program. The lunch consisted of chop suey made by Mrs. L. R. Wilson, and apple pie and coffee. The program included readings by Mrs. Minnie Souires, Mrs. Mary Betzold, Arthur Hebson and Mrs. Gladys Prescott, and singing. Try a Plain Dealer Want Ad. TIME TABLE A. T. & S. F. R. R.
