LEGION SAYS JAPS 'SIDESTEPPING' LAW SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 11. — American Legion officiaz, headed by Morgan Keaton, state adjutant of the organization, are convinced that the Japanese have no intention of complying with the alien land laws of the Pacific coast states, if they can evade them, or, failing evasion, if they can force an abrogation thereof through their home government. "Already a plan has been launched," said Keaton, "providing for the employment of Japanese labor, with a bonus based on net profits from the crops, instead of on gross profits. This was so clearly an attempt to evade the law that Fresno county officials have declared they will prosecute anyone taking part in such a contract." A million dollar corporation for the Japanese has been organized, shares in which are offered to the Japanese and their American supporters who desire to aid in evasion of the intent of our state law, according to Keaton. "Boware of Japanese propaganda that the anti-alien land laws are driving people from the land and that California agricultural interests are doomed," says the American Legion adjutant. "We shall issue a call for enough ex-service men to man every farm in the state if the land-holder wants them." An editorial in Nichi Bei (Japanese-American News) of San Francisco calls attention to the fact that the Japanese of California have savings in banks aggregating $50,000,000, and states that it is a matter of duty as well as of interest for them to contribute liberally to make the plans. MOVES TOWN TO BUILD RESERVOIR The entire town of American Falls, on the Snake river, Idaho, is to be moved by United States government engineers in the course of building what is to be the largest reservoir in the country, recording to the February issue of Popular Science Monthly. The present town site will be the storage basin, and more than $6,000 acres surrounding the town will be infused when the project is completed. This giant reservoir will have a capacity of 1,590,000 acre-feet of water and will cost more than $12,000,000. PLANT PEARLS IN AMERICAN RIVERS Science will soon place millions of dollars in the inland streams of the United States, there to be gathered by anyone who desires. This amazing announcement is made by the U.S. bureau of fisheries in the February number of Popular Science Monthly. Thra scientific propagation of freshwater mussels, the government experts plan to make dozens of rivers throut the land yield rich harvests in pearls. Few people probably know that pearl fishing is conducted regularly in the rivers of the United States, yet during the last year more than $15,000,000 worth of pearls were found in mussel shells on the bottom of such rivers at the Mississippi and the Black River, and the White river in Arkansas. These pearls were produced by natural means. NEW TODAY A REAL BUY—Fine corner lot, close in, good clean district, for sale; $1500; terms. Phone 23. FOR SALE—Vegetable truck. 329 No. Olive-sn. FOR RENT—Furnished 6 room An editorial in Nichi Bei (Japanese-American News) of San Francisco calls attention to the fact that the Japanese of California have savings in banks aggregating $50,000,000, and states that it is a matter of duty as well as of interest for them to contribute liberally to make the plans of this corporation successful. The object of the corporation is "to render aid to general farming industry by investing in farm lands and farm products, and furnishing financial assistance to the Japanese farmers of California." Translations hitherto published from Japanese newspapers in San Francisco and Seattle urge the Japanese to use the privileges of their American-born children now attaining their majority as American citizens for the purpose of securing for the alien Japanese such advantages as use and ownership of land as may not be held by them under the laws now in force and already interpreted by the courts. STUDY HOW TO RAISE BIG SPUDS SACRAMENTO, Feb. 11. Potato growers from virtually every section of California will discuss with department heads of the state department of agriculture ways and means of securing a larger and better quality early potato crop for marketing in the northwest states. The conference was called by G. H. Hecke, state director of agriculture, who declared that unless the quality of the California potato is improved that Idaho will soon supplant this state in the early potato field. Hecke urged the growers to cooperate with his department in furthering production of certified potatoes. "HOW MUCH MONEY" is made on the average lot, bought as an investment. With few exceptions the average city building lot may show 20 or 25 per cent if held for a long period of time. Generally speaking, the higher price the lot, the slower the increase in values. "WESTEDGE TRACT FOR PROFIT" One of these full-size homesites at the low figure of $695 might easily bring you several hundred per cent on the investment. The share of each lot owner, if a 3000 barrel well comes in, would amount to 14 barrels of oil per day. Crude oil is now close to the dollar mark and two dollar oil is freely predicted by experienced oil men. If no oil is found these lots are, nevertheless, the lowest priced homesites within a radius of several miles of Anaheim. "The Oil Well" on WESTEDGE TRACT has already spudded in and continuous drilling is the program. A sucecessful big operator in drilling this well. It is conceded that if there is oil in the West Anaheim district this drilling crew will bring it in. See us for the cleanest investment with the greatest possibilities in the district. FIRE GOT JAPAN'S MONEY MACHINERY TOKIO Feb 11.-The Japanese government, badly needing buildings and facilities to operate its various departments since the great earthquake and fire of early September, has found a new way to solve the problem due to lack of machines to re-paper paper money. The chief currency in Japan is of paper, the yen corresponding to the American 50c piece;the 50 sen corresponding to the American 25c piece, and the 5 yen and others-all having been issued in paper money for many years Only recently has the government virtually abolished issuance of 10 sen paper pieces, the 10 sen corresponding to the American 5c. The government has ordered from a foreign country machines to replace those burned These will arrive in April.Meantime, the Japanese government will establish a paper money renovating and patching department.
