SOME INTERESTING BULLETIN city; Consolidated December 15, 1923 DECEMBER 16, 1923 Exhibit No. 1—In which the Bulletin, by consolidation with the Herald, announces it has circulation of 6000. Also, note in the paragraph just above where the Bulletin affirms it has severed all relations with the Los Angeles Evening Express. However today the Bulletin and Express are being sold and delivered together the same as the Herald and Express were combined, that is, outside the city limits beyond the eye of the local merchants. THE ANAHEIM BULLETIN-HERALD GUARANTEES THE LARGEST CIRCULAR IN NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY, AND GROWING EVERY DAY ANAHEIM BULLETIN and Anaheim Daily Herald of Orange County, Consolidated December 15, 1923 THE ANAHEIM BULLETIN-HERALD GUARANTEES THE LARGEST CIRCULATION IN NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY, AND GROWING EVERY DAY ANAHEIM BULLETIN and Anaheim Daily Herald of Orange County, Consolidated December 15, 1923 Exhibit No. 3—In which the Bulletin-Herald guarantees the largest circulation in Northern Orange County. Exhibit No. 4—In which the Plain Dealer invites The Bulletin to submit to an exhaustive, unbiased circulation checkup. MERCHANTS OF ANAHEIM who are buying newspaper advertising space are entitled to know just how much paid circulation the Anaheim newspapers actually have in the north half of Orange County. When the honest merchant is waiting on a customer he does not sell his goods sight unseen, keeping it under the counter or in the warehouse, but he willingly displays it in the full light of day and goes into detail with his customer as to quantity and quality, workmanship and merit. In fact, he wants the customer to be satisfied that he is getting value and just as represented. Just so the honest newspaper, which has been representing its paid circulation exactly correct at all times, is more than anxious to show its goods and prove its statements to all its advertisers. A local newspaper started a few months ago lays claim to the largest paid circulation in No. Orange-co. As much as The Plain Dealer dislikes to engage in anything resembling a “newspaper quarrel,” it cannot permit this unqualified claim to go unchallenged. Either this claim is true or it is not true. As much as The Plain Dealer dislikes to engage in anything resembling a "newspaper quarrel," it cannot permit this unqualified claim to go unchallenged. Either this claim is true or it is not true. The Plain Dealer believes the Anaheim advertiser is entitled to know the truth since it is his money which makes Anaheim newspapers possible. Therefore The Plain Dealer makes the following propositions which it believes no one can say are other than eminently fair to all concerned: 1—There he conducted a thorow and unbiased canvass of the Anaheim newspaper field with respect to paid circulation: 2—That this canvass be conducted in any way to be determined by six Anaheim newspaper advertisers. 3—That to cover the expense of this very complete check and canvass, each newspaper deposit with the advertisers a certified check for $600. 4—That the newspaper found to have misrepresented its paid circulation shall forfeit its check; that the newspaper found to have been honest in its paid circulation claims will be returned its check with a report from the merchants on just what they find to be the true situation. 5—That the canvass shall start not later than Monday, Feb. 11, since any newspaper which has been honest in its paid circulation claims is always prepared for and courts such investigations. The Plain Dealer wishes to state right here that it not only claims the largest paid circulation of any daily newspaper published in Anaheim or No. Orange-co., but that it actually has it—more than 3500. The Plaindealer this afternoon put up its certified check for $600 with six businessmen. RESTING EXHIBITS ANAHEIM BUL. and Anaheim Daily Herald of Orange County, Consolidate ANAHEIM CALIF. VOL. XL. No. 27 ALD 0 APPEAR 1TH SUNDAY :ROM TODAY Exhibit No. 2—Only 13 days later, but the Bulletin decides that it has only 4235 circulation. A few days later the Bulletin figured this was too big and dropped the practice of announcing in cold type its circulation claims. With the purchase yesterday of the circulation, Associated Press franchises, advertising rights and contracts of the Anaheim Daily Herald, which in the future will be known as the Anaheim Daily Herald of Orange county. The negotiations, which resulted in the transfer of the Herald property, were closed yesterday afternoon when London publishers of the Bulletin acquired the publication from F. W. Kellogg former publisher of the Herald. With the publication of the combined papers this morning, the Herald passes out of existence as an individual unit, and the future will be merged with Anaheim Bulletin. The publication Express, which will be de- LARGEST CIRCULANG EVERY DAY A STATEMENT The Anaheim Bulletin-Herald today completed arrangements with the Audit Bureau of Circulation, which to the newspaper world is the same as the state bank examiner to the banking system, for a complete audit of its circulation. This audit when completed will be on file in the Bulletin-Herald office for the inspection of advertisers and subscribers who may be interested. While the business affairs of the office of the Bulletin-Herald are of little interest to the reader, the foregoing statement is made a necessity because of a challenge questioning the Bulletin-Herald veracity. The Bulletin-Herald policy forbids that the publication seek to enhance its own coffers at the expense of the space which rightfully belongs to its readers and the civic advancement of Anaheim. In strict accordance with this policy the Bulletin-Herald will not be drawn into a controversy which has for its end only selfish gain. Exhibit No. 5—Bulletin's reply to Plain Dealer's challenge. Yes, the Bulletin is not at all enthusiastic about getting down to cold facts. ANAHEIM BULLETIN and Anaheim Daily Herald of Orange County, Consolidated December 15, 1923 Exhibit No. 6—After thinking it over, Bulletin decides it hasn't the largest circulation in Northern Orange-co. after all and withdraws such declaration from its caption.
