Saturday, February 9, 1924 FORD PUTS OUT ALL-STEEL TRUCK The Ford Motor Co. announces a new product, an all-steel combination truck body and cab mounted on the standard Ford 1-ton chassis to be sold as a complete unit. The new body is of the open type, so constructed that it may be readily converted into other body combinations by using stakes, sideboards, canopy top, screen sides, etc. "In fact," says the Ford statement, "the purpose in producing the new body was to place a low cost general utility truck meeting both agricultural and commercial requirements, at the disposal of ton truck users." The body is built of steel to withstand the most severe usage and presents a new development in construction. The steel sills are reinforced with wood in order to lessen vibration and road shocks, thus making for more durability and longer life. The loading space is seven feet two inches in length by four feet in width and of convenient and practical depth. The end gate is strongly braced and secured by heavy chains, which hold it in position when lowered. The cab, also of steel construction, is extra roomy. The seat is of artificial leather, well cushioned on four-inch springs. Protection from the weather is afforded by close-fitting door curtains mounted on uprights and opening and closing with the door. An oblong window in the back of the cab gives ample facilities for rear vision, adding to the safety as well as the convenience of the driver. The new truck is already on display in many Ford dealers showrooms throughout the country. In addition to the saving offered trunk users in this body, is the convenience of now being able to buy the Ford ton truck complete and ready to put into service. Unique Ambulance Service W. S. Huddle, prominent local funeral director, has an inventive turn of mind. More than one constructive improvement in funeral direction and ambulance service has been made thru the owner of the Broadway and Lemon St. establishment. It was Huddle who acquired the first public ambulance equipped so to appear as a private pleasure car. The new ambulance with special streacher equipment recently acquired by Hudson is unique in ambulance service. Superiority of Stromberg Proved West Bros. were highly elated upon receiving advice of the successful trial trip of the new ZK-1 Navy Dirigible in its flight over New York City. This air monster is the largest in the United States and was designed and built in this country. All materials used were made by American manufacturers, which proves conclusively that we are independent of foreign nations in constructing airships of this character. West Bros. were particularly gratified with the perfect performance of the Stromberg carburettors on the six 300 H.P. engine equipment of this shop. They state that this performance is only another demonstration of the dependability and efficient operation of Stromberg carburettors under any and all conditions. The fuel used in these tests was a blend of Aviation gasoline and alcohol, and is carried in 48 sep- OVERLAND SALES IN SOUTH JUMP Willys-Overland Pacific Company of Los Angeles rang up to 1924 curtain in Southern California with a sales gain of about 1 per cent for the opening month of the new year. The annual pilgrimage over the snow-tortured roads of the Sierra in order to appear first in the valley is one of the most gruelling grinds known to motordom, and is therefore a highly coveted honor for Studebaker. No car has ever won the race four times before. The winning passenger car was a stock Studebaker Big Six, dispatched from the show rooms of the Chester N. Weaver Co., San Francisco. The car was piloted through the "thick going" of the Wawona road by H. M. Gregory. He was welcomed at the park by Chief Ranger F. S. Townsley. "Well," exclaimed the chief ranger, "we're not surprised. Although the roads are just about impassable now, we were looking for you. Year after year a Studebaker has been the first touring car into the Yosemite, and we just figured there would be one along again this year." The snow was heavier and the road conditions more difficult than in any previous year, according to Pilot Gregory. Another Studebaker, a light six touring car, driven by William J. Silva of Modesto, Calif., came in second in the "first into the park" run, and both cars arrived in perfect condition, victors over mountain roads and perilous winter weather. Toy, chairman of the state highway commission, today made public a statement setting forth that work underway and contracted for on the Pacific highway, between Redding and the Oregon lines, calls for an expenditure of $1,478,000. Toy declared that California fully intends to carry out her share of the work and described unit by unit the construction now in progress. "A lot of misleading and confusing statements have been made about what we are doing," said Toy, "and I want to re-assert that California is going to complete the Pacific highway as fast as it is humanly possible, and in accordance with higher standards of construction, which have been adopted for all work. "From the standpoint of travel into the state, the Pacific highway today is California's most important interstate road. We fully realize that only a road of high standards, free as possible from curves, can care for this traffic, totaling 2000 machines a day." Toy asserted that it will take approximately $5,000,000 to complete California's Pacific highway program, but predicted that the money will be forthcoming when it is needed. Walter's garage on East Center st., you have missed something. These are among the smartest cars to be seen anywhere. The Roamer has the Rochester-Duesenberg four-cylinder motor. With this motor a Roamer chassis skimmed over the sands at Daytona Beach, Fla., at 106.1 miles per hour, establishing six new-world's speed records for a stock chassis. Then there is the improved spring suspension—double cantilever springs, which are declared to have four times the combined effectiveness of the old semi-elliptic springs and shock absorbers. The Barley six is another wonderful combination of beauty and mechanical efficiency. Gear shift and brake levers are within convenient reach, all instruments in clear sight, and tools are hidden in a panel of the door at the driver's left. Weaving of the frame is impossible; it is of 5-inch pressed steel. The body, of seasoned hardwood well braced is exceptionally strong. The 50-horsepower six-cylinder motor has to propel only 2700 pounds of well-balanced weight. The axle is of the semi-floating type with one-piece pressed steel housing. STAR DISPLAYS TO BE SHOW FEATURES Two automobile shows, both of which will display prominently the new 1924 Star line, are foremost in the thoughts of hundreds of automobile men, and thousands of motor car owners, future and present, this week. One is the Portland show, when opened yesterday in the big Oregon city, and the other is the eighth annual automobile show of San Francisco, which opens next Saturday afternoon, probably the coast's greatest automotive display during this year. Through the co-operation of the Star Motor Co. of Calif., the Star dealers in both cities have been able to get complete lines to display during the show weeks, and are confident that Star will emerge from both displays even more popular than it has been since the announcement of the new models last November. Chief among the Star exhibits is a solid nickel-plated car, prepared under the direction of Forrest Arnold, general sales manager of the Star factory, at a cost said to be over four thousand dollars, and one of the most beautiful cars ever prepared for an automobile show. The car is a stock touring model, but inside and out, every bit of metal on the car has been nickel-plated, the company even going so far as to finish up parts such as the transmission, the driving units, motor block and crankcase, and underneath the running gear. It is probably the finest car of its type that has ever been seen in this country. A big portion of the Star exhibit space will be devoted also to the Star light delivery truck and the Mason Road King, which is being merchandised through the western territory by Star dealers. The last named Durant product is a speed truck, built with a choice of 12 body styles, and on which any type of trucking body can be built.
