DEMANDS ROW OF TREES CUT DOWN
Has a gum tree row any business growing beside an orange grove?
This question, which has both creed Orange county fruit growers for years, was still "up in the air" today, after nearly being settled in court.
The case of W. W. Tantlinger against J. A. Prescott, which came before Superior Judge F. C. Drumm for trial yesterday was expected to throw some light on the question but, due to a circumstance, the decision has been temporarily delayed. In the midst of the trial the court discovered that it had some "inside information" regarding the case and therefore declined to proceed further with the hearing.
So, the status of the gum tree as a desirable or an undesirable citizen remains for the moment unsettled.
While winning popularity as a windbake and in that respect a friend of the orange tree, the gum tree has also won unpopularity for its empathy to the orange tree in other days.
There has, it is said, been little neighborly spirit between the two trees and disharmony often exists where they rub elbows—for the orange tree usually gets rubbed the wrong way. The Tantlinger-Prescott case is cited as an example.
Tantlinger filed suit against his neighbor, Prescott, for $25,000 damages and injunctive relief, protesting that a gum row on Prescott's land, bordering south line of Tantlinger's grove, near Tustin, has been a source of great damage to the Tantlinger trees.
The gum row's location, Tantlinger claims, casts a perpetual shade over several of the orange tree rows, keeping the soil in a moist and unhealthy condition. Roots of the gum trees, he asserts, reach forth into the soil and absorb forth into the soil and absorb nourishment that should feed the orange trees. Tantlinger,
LEAVES ESTATE OF $20,000 TO FRIENDS
That Mrs. Emma Crosby, whose death closely followed that of Charles J. Crosby, her son and sole relative, did not survive long enough to receive the funds from his estate, which she inherited, was shown today in a petition filed in the Superior court for probate of her will.
The Charles Crosby estate, consisting of receipts from the sale of the Crosby stage line, which recently was auctioned to the Crown Stage lines at $20,000 will thus be passed along with Mrs. Crosby's own possessions, valued at $2340, to her heirs. Having no kin, she left her estate to a half dozen friends, most of whom reside in Santa Ana.
SUES DOCTOR ON BALING CONTRACT
Judgment for $976 was asked today by H. J. Wickman, in a suit on file in the superior court against Wm. Linebarger, involving a disagreement over the baling of hay on a Santa Ana canyon ranch.
Wickman, represented by Attorney Leonard Evans of Anaheim, alleges that he entered an agreement with Linebarger last May for the baling of hay on the Dr. J. L. Beeche ranch in the canyon. Wickman was to be paid at the rate of $3 per ton and was also to receive "reasonable" remuneration for use of his team and implements in hauling hay from the hillside portions of the ranch to the hay baler.
Claiming that he baled 212 tons of hay, Wickman presents a bill for $814.25. He declares that only $390 has been paid, leaving a balance of $424.25 due him.
In addition he alleges that at the request of Linebarger he boarded other employees, serving 38 meals, for which he presents a claim of 30c per meal, totaling $11.40.
The bill of particulars also includes a claim, assigned by Dr. Buech to Wickman.
SANTA FE DROPS 1000 BBLS. DAILY
Santa Fe Springs productivity continues on its downward plunge. The production of this once greatest of all California oil fields has dropped to 182,000 barrels, and continues to decline at the rate of 1000 barrels a day. The one well of importance added to production in the Springs field this week was Clark No. 9, a 40-barrel completion of the Annales-mated Oil Co. The Southern California Oil Co. is to be congratulated on the completion of a 16-barrel well. Southern California No. 2 was drilled to 4669, but only after three weeks of balling swabbing and cleaning out was induced to go on production. The only new development at the Springs is the beginning of interior drilling of leases by the General Petroleum Corp.
The Union Oil Co. of Calif., has the famous Bell No. 1 about read to go on production in the de Meyer sand. Bell No. 1 in the de Meyer sand has produced more than a million barrels. However to the depleted condition of the Meyer sand, the Bell was not expected to make over 500 or 600-barrel well at most.

FAMOUS AUTHOR SEES BRAIN CHILD COME TO LIFE
Glenn Hunter, Ernest Torrence and May McAvoy in a scene from the Paramount Picture "West of the Water Tower"
Homer Croy, author of "West of the Water Tower," the novel of small town life which rivals "Main Street" as one of the most popular books of its kind, visited the Paramount Long Island studio recently and watched the process of putting his story into screen form. After witnessing Rollin Sturgeon film several scenes for the picture and after talking with Glenn Hunter, who is starred in the picture, May McAvoy, Ernest Torrence, George Fawcett and Zasu Pitts, the featured players, he expressed himself as being highly pleased with the production so far as it had come as near being ideal for the parts of Guy and Plummer as I could possibly wish for. If I had pieked the cast for this picture myself I could have done no better. I could stand around and watch them work all day long. Their actions draw me like a magnet. I have never experienced anything like it in all my life.
"When I wrote the story I had no idea that it would ever be made into a motion picture. I told Mr. Lasky that when he sent for me in regard to selling the motion picture rights, but he said that was what he liked about the story."
