PROBE DEATH OF
MOTOR SPEEDER
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4.—The coroner's office was today arranging for an inquest into the death yesterday at the Ascot speedway of Jimmy Craft of Loganport, Ind., when his mering car hurtling around the track at 75 miles an hour, crashed into a fence from an unknown reason.
Twenty-five thousand race fans witnessed the accident.
Craft was thrown from his seat and in front of his car. Although injured he tried to rise to his feet and signal to the other drivers who were close behind him. As he did so Norris Shears, driving madly to overtake Craft, who was in the lead, plunged into the wreck. By dexterous manipulation the other drivers did—the race managed by close margins to avoid hitting the two wrecked cars.
Craft was dead before reaching the hospital. Shears was given first aid treatment at the hospital and found not to be seriously hurt.
Floyd Roberts and Frank Wheeler, other drivers in the race, also crashed into the fence at different times but neither was seriously injured.
Ralph De Palma swept the field in all auto events.
FIREPLACES BRING
DEATH TO NINE
ATLANTA, Feb. 4.—When the open fireplace, unprotected by a screen, claimed nine more lives here this week, as indicated by the mortality records of Dr. John P. Kennedy, city health officer, Fire Chief W. B. Cody issued a vigorous renewal of his warning, sounded several weeks ago, that the "open fireplace is one of the greatest menaces of the day to the lives of elderly persons and children.
"I have constantly warned about this," said the fire chief. "Wire screening over grates and open fireplaces would serve the necessary protection, if people would only use a little forethought."

CERTIFIED POTATO SEED IN DELAWARE
Use of certified potato seed has shown a marked increase in New Castle county, Delaware, within the last four years, according to reports to the U.S. department of agriculture. This county, while not a large producer of potatoes, grows annually about 400,000 bushels as a secondary cash crop, supplying a nearby city market. Use of certified potato seed to improve the quality of the crop, which the county extension agent has advocated as part of the county's extension program has, therefore, interested the farmers of the county generally.
As a beginning, two bushels of certified potato seed were tried out by one farmer. This yielded at the rate of considerably more than double the average yield from locally grown seed and aroused much interest in use of certified seed. The following year four farmers volunteered to grow larger demonstration plots, as there was some uncertainty felt as to whether or not it would be practical to use the certified seed in extensive plantings. This time the certified seed more than dou-

LIONS ORGANIZE COUNTY COUNCIL
Persuant to a call issued by Past President, E. H. Rowland of the Santa Ana Lions club, representatives from all the Lions clubs in the county met at St. Ann's Inn.
The call was for the purpose of bringing about closer relationship in regards to matters of civic as well as social interest.
A splendid talk was given by M. B. Levy of Santa Ana on the matter of highways, saying that the cooperation of all clubs in the county in the vital question is essential. He said that several trunk highways should be built or the present once made wider to take care of the ever increasing traffic. He suggested that each club get back of a movement to have a planning commission and that the co-operation with another such a commission of the county would get results.
Officers elected were: E. H. Rowland, Santa Ana, president; Bob White, Annaheim vice president; Frank G. Swann, Huntington Beach secretary; the president, secretary and one other member of each club were to act as directors.
The next meeting is to be held at the Annaheim Elks club at 6:30, Feb. 15.

739,626
more Ford cars and trucks were produced last year than the previous year, an increase of over 50 per cent.
In spite of this tremendous increase in production, it was impossible to meet delivery requirements during the spring and summer months when orders for 350,000 Ford Cars and Trucks could not be filled.
This year winter buying for immediate delivery has been more active than ever before—and in addition 200,000 orders have already been booked through the Ford Weekly Purchase Plan for spring delivery.
These facts clearly indicate that the demand during this spring and summer will be far greater than ever, and that orders should be placed immediately with Ford Dealers as a means of protection against delay in securing your Ford Car or Truck or Fordson Tractor.
