SUPPLY CO. IS FINE INVESTMENT The soundness of the investment of the exchange growers in their Fruit Growers' Supply Co. is well exemplified in the recent report issued by its directors to its stockholders. The rapidity of growth of this company and the service rendered by it is one of the outstanding accomplishments of co-operation, declares the exchange. In order that the data upon which they should base their conclusions would be as accurate and as comprehensive as possible, they supplemented their own knowledge with the employment of the well-known firm of Price, Waterhouse & Co. to audit their accounts for the past year; the General Appraisal Co. to appraise the physical assets, and in addition secured the services of two competent industrial engineers of national reputation, Messrs. Max Rotter and E. C. Welborn of Milwaukee and Chicago, respectively, to report upon the policies of operation and the personnel of the organization. The reports from these three disinterested sources paved the way for a detailed study on the part of the board of directors and made possible the comprehensive report, such as has just been made on their part, to the stockholders of the company. Despite the fact that the new mill at Susanville was necessarily built at the very peak of post-war costs, and the upkeep and replacement at Hilt have been such as to maintain an efficient operation, yet the appraisal made in July of last year shows the value of these plants to be approximately $337,000 more than their book value. Due to the appreciation of timber and lands since their purchase, the appraisal shows the value of these properties to be over $4,500,000 in excess of cost. Based upon these 7000 EXTRACTORS SOLD LAST SEASON Seven thousand Sunkist fruit extractors were sold to the soda fountain trade during the 1922-23 season, according to T. F. Baker, manager of the department of fresh fruit drinks. These extractors were sold to the fountain trade approximately at the cost of manufacture and selling according to the report. Added to the 5262 machines which were sold in 1922 a total of more than 12,000 Sunkist extractors are now in operation on soda fountains, providing a market for increasing quantities of oranges and lemons. Estimate made by various representatives of the exchange who are in a position to check the amount of business done by Sunkist extractor users, place the average consumption of oranges and lemons combined at a total of 50 boxes a year for each extractor. On this basis the Sunkist extractors now use provide a market for approximately 600,000 boxes of citrus fruit annually, or 1500 carloads. This is almost entirely new business and stimulates rather than subtracts from the quantity of oranges and lemons consumed in the usual ways. REPENTS OF CRIME IN KILLING BUCKS SACRAMENTO, Feb. 1.—"I have made my peace with God but feel that I must have forgiveness from the California State Fish and Game commission before my conscience is clear." With this introduction, a citizen of Klamath Falls, Oregon, who twelve years ago killed two bucks in Modoc county during the closed season, has admitted his offense in a letter and asked for pardon. George Neale, executive officer to the state commission has extended the hand of forgiveners in a letter to the conscience stricken hunter and adjured him to "Go and sin no more." Despite the fact that the new mill at Susanville was necessarily built at the very peak of post-war costs, and the upkeep and replacement at Hilt have been such as to maintain an efficient operation, yet the appraisal as made in July of last year shows the value of these plants to be approximately $337,000 more than their book value. Due to the appreciation of timber and lands since their purchase, the appraisal shows the value of these properties to be over $4,500,000. In excess of cost. Based upon these appraised values, the total assets of the company indicate $4,932,-153 in excess of the issued capital stock of $4,478:130, or in other words, after retiring all the obligations of the company except the capital stock the net worth shows a valuation of $9,410,282. VALUES INCREASE AT MIDWAY CITY Midway City, the new site for a town at the junction of Huntington Beach and Santa Ana boulevards, has reached that stage of development where it is deemed advisable to run excursions every day to the tract. A bus will leave Long Beach at 11:20 a.m. Other buses leave Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange and Santa Ana at such times as will be advertised in this paper. These are not hired motor cars. Midway City starts its own privately owned busses. Several comfortable, well built cars have been purchased and will be used in the development of this section of the country right along. They will be employed in a variety of ways. Anyone who has not visited this part for a couple of months will be absolutely astonished at the changes that have taken place. Here you find half a dozen fine homes all ready for occupancy, with garages, gardens and other improvements laid out. You will see a dozen foundations for buildings in various stages of progress. Three stores are nearly completed—will be ready to move into, in fact, about Feb. 12th. It does not take much imagination to visualize a coming busy city. The owners call Midway City a Community of Garden Homes." "But," says Arthur E. Dike, the energetic managing owner "this will also be a 'Community of Busy Factories' for we have a large tract on the other side of Santa Ana-bldd, which is partly designed as land on which will be erected factories of several kinds some of which are already being planned. The nearness of Newport Harbor and other exceptional advantages of this part of Orange co. makes the proposed industrial expansion here something to enthusse about." Houses are being offered for sale in Midway City for as low as $500 down and $50 per month including interest. These are four and five room homes up-to-the-minute in every way and a model of their kind. Mr. Dike states that a grocery will have an immediate big trade. GRIFFIS RETURNING CUXHAVEN, Germany, Feb. I. Lieut. Corliss H. Griffis of Hamilton, Ohio, released from a German prison after he had been sentenced to a long term for his part in the attempt to kidnap Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, rich American draft dodger, is on the high sea today enroute home. Before the Liner Albert Ballin departed, Griffis said the first thing he would do after reaching the United States would be to visit his father and mother. here from the surrounding territory, while a restaurant will make a quick small fortune. Both are badly wanted. A bank is needed, he also says. There is good business to be obtained at once. Local real estate men who have visited this part recently are one and all strong in the belief that a year will see this a flourishing community and perhaps one of the most astonishing real estate developments in So. Calif. One prominent man says that values are increasing here at an almost unbelievable rate. Safe Fat Reduction Reduce, reduce, reduce slogan of all fat people be slim, is the cry of society.
