Miscellaneous Synchronization Plays Big Part In Opera Presentation "The average theater-goer has but little conception of what a large part synchronization plays in the preparation of a play or opera for presentation on the stage." It was Ellis Rhodes, director of the Orange County Choral Union which will present De Koven's famous opera, "Robin Hood" at the Anaheim Union High school auditorium the night of January 25th, who was speaking. "Everything," he continued, "must be synchronized, in order that there may be a perfect ensemble. It is all done by means of cues, musical and spoken. One action, or one word, or one musical phrase, is the signal for another action, another word, another musical phrase. "Take, for instance, the work of Dominico Clanfonti, orchestra director, for this production of 'Robin Hood.' At first thought it would appear to the average theater-goer that rehearsals are conducted with full orchestra. This is not the case. It is far better that the singers be reheared in one group and the orchestra in another." Mr. Clanfonti attends my rehearsals, of course, to get the tempo I employ for the various numbers. Then, when he returns to his orchestra, he knows exactly the tempo that he must give throut out. "It is not until several rehearsals before the performance that we begin rehearsing singers and orchestra in conjunction. Indeed, it is not necessary that it be done any sooner—they have both learned their share in the performance, the tempo, the phrasing and so on, and the joint rehearsals at the end are merely designed to smooth out the rough spots. "In preparing 'Robin Hood' we have had more time at our disposal than has been the case with several other of the works that the choral union has undertaken. The result is that De Koven's ever-delightful fantasy will be given in a manner entirely satisfying. "Just one little detail, for example, that is likely to be a stumbling block for an amateur performance, is that of not allowing principals and chorus sufficient time to dress between numbers. I have bent every energy to the end of eliminating confusion and misunderstanding in this regard—and thus, another of the countless details making for perfection, has been attended to.
