TULARE LAKE IS NEARLY TAMED
The taming of Tulare lake has been almost completed, and out in San Joaquin Valley, Calif., men are amazed by the farming romance that has resulted. This year, according to estimates just made, a grain crop amounting to more than $5,000,000 in value will be harvested—a record for that district.
This has been more than an irrigation problem. For years Tulare lake has been receding, leaving behind it a rich alluvial soil in the lake bottom. But in years of flood and freshet, the lake overleaps all bounds, and puts the whole region under water. The old lake covered about 80 square miles in normal years; in flood years it inundated more than 150 square miles.
Finally, by means of dredging, drying and the building of levees and canals, the lake has been confined to its proper area, and full advantage has been taken of the old bed to plant grain crops. Powerful electric pumps bring back the water of the lake when needed, for irrigating these crops.
The largest of them consists of three pumps of 125 h.p. each, which will irrigate 7000 acres one foot deep per hour.
That is how the farmers of San Joaquin valley have benefited when Tulare lake was made to provide water in just the right quantity, at exactly the proper time, and in precisely the desired place.
When the grain is harvested, some of the most efficient farming methods in the world are seen in operation. On the largest ranches no sacks are used. The grain is loaded loose into trucks, and on arrival at the grain elevator it is unloaded into a pit.

270 MILLIONS OF STATE MINERALS
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 21—California mineral production for the year 1923 is estimated by Libby L. Root, state mineralist, to reach a value of $270,472,000.
This estimate is an increase of over $25,000,000 for the 1922 production, and is due principally to petroleum, which shows a new quantity record for 1923, nearly double the previous record figure of 1922 in number of barrels. Even with the lower prices prevailing, it is believed the 1923 product will show an increase approximating $22,000,000 in excess of the 1922 record, which was $173,000,000.
Second in the list is cement, with 10,000,000 barrels valued at $17,000,000; third is crushed rock, sand and gravel valued at $12,000,000, and fourth is gold with a production estimated at $13,250,000. Another important unit is brick and hollow building tile valued at $9,000,000. Copper follows with a value of $3,942,-000 and silver is next with $2,-771,000 production.
Eight hundred ounces of platinum valued at $180,000, quicksilver with 6200 flasks, worth $409,000, natural gas to the volume of 115,000,000 cubic feet appraised at $7,475,600; four thousand two hundred tons of
SEEKS CURE FOR FRUIT FLY PEST
HONOLULU, Jan. 1. — A series of interesting experiments to determine whether refrigeration will rid alligator pears of the Mediterranean fruit fly pest and thus permit their shipment to the mainland and other markets, are being conducted here by the U.S. agricultural experiment station. In the meantime local growers are watching the experiments with interest. They are of the belief that if refrigeration will kill the fruit fly and its egg, that the quarantine will be lifted and practically a new industry will thus be opened in Hawaii. Alligator pears are so plentiful here during the summer that in many parts of the islands they are fed to hogs to prevent waste.

NOTED AUTHORESS TO SHOOT TIGER
LONDON, Jan. 21.—Mrs. Thos. Seton, American authoress, has arrived in London, en route for India, with an ambition to shoot a man-eating tiger.
"I have shot a bear, moose, wapit, elk and antelope and want to add a man-eating tiger to my bag," said Mrs. Seton.
"Please don't give the impression that I go round the world killing animals."
"I would rather shoot them with a camera. I shall never kill, but one tiger, except in necessity. If I have good luck I shall get all the thrills possible. I have not yet fixed a day with the tiger, but I hope to stay outside of him."
The first duty of the consumptive is to himself—to get well; his second is to his fellow man—to prevent the spread of his infection.
