URGE ANTI-CHILD LABOR ACT SOON
The White Temple is to co-operate with a number of Aunheim organizations Sunday night in a community service to help create an interest in the present national movement to amend the constitution of the U.S. in the interest of the childhood of the nation.
At the present time there is no national child labor law, the supreme court having declared the last law passed by Congress unconstitutional. Either the children of America must be turned over to the exploiters and the sweaters or the constitution must be amended.
Only 13 states in the entire Union measure up in all respects to the conservative standards of the former federal child labor law, 23 states allow children to go to work without a common school education, 14 states allow children to work from 9 to 11 hours; five states do not protect children from night work; 23 states have made so many exemptions in their laws that they might as well have no laws.
Pacing this peril, President Coolidge has joined with many other leaders, and with such organizations as the Federal Council of Churches, General Federation of Women's Clubs, National Council of Mothers and Parent-Tacher Associations, American Federation of Labor, National Education Ass'n., and others, including Congress to amend the consultation by passing an enabling act to permit Congress to pass a national law to regulate child labor. This enshbling act calls for a two-thirds vote of Congress and a three-fourths vote of the states to become a part of the Constitution.
The local C. of C., the labor unions, the Ebell club and the R.T. A will be represented in the service, and their separate actions will be reported.
A central committee representing Anaheim will send communications to our senators and representatives, and also to the Literary Digest and to Colliers.
Dr. J.A. Geltinger, pastor of the White Temple, will preside, and make a short address at the

R. R. Mills as Robin Hood, name part in famous opera, which school auditorium here the night of January 25.
"Romance is not dead—numerous modernists to the contrary notwithstanding."
Ellis Rhodes, director of the Orange County Choral Union, made this observation today, in commenting on the vast amount of interest that has been aroused in this section over the fact that his organization is to produce "Robin Hood," Beginald DeKoven's famous opera, at the Anaheim Union high school auditorium here the night of Jan. 25.
"If romance is not the very essence of this work," Rhodes continued, "then what is? Think of the color, the glamour, the beauty in the very name 'Robin Hood.' The scene is laid in England in the time of Richard I. Doesn't that stir the imagination?
"A more popular opera has perhaps never been written. Think of it! 'Robin Hood' has been played more than $000 times!
There is but one reason for this immense popularity, and that is the opera's romance. The golden haze of another, perhaps happier, day envelopes the characters and the scenes. The Sheriff of Nottingham, Sir Guy Allan-a-Dale, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian, Annahelle, Will Scarlet—these and all the rest live and have their being in another world—a fairyland of delight.
"An outstanding fact about the opera is that DeKoven invested the romance of the story with a musical atmosphere, which is not only in keeping with that story, but which actually enhances it a thousand-fold. He has caught the very soul and spirit of the lyrics and in such things as 'Brown October Ale,' 'The Tinkers Song,' 'The Armorer's Song' and the numerous others have a never-to-beforegone charm.
Whereas a certain sweetness, which in 'Robin Hood' is far from cloying, however, must of necessity be contained in such a work; at the same time there is in DeKoven's music a rollicking jolity that one unconsciously associates with everything that pertains to the time of 'Robin Hood.'"
Rhodes added that perhaps seldom in the west had such a chorus been assembled to sing 'Robin Hood', as had responded to the call sent out by the Orange County Says: "When Joint-Ease In—Joint Agony Gets It was a high-class phantom who saw prescription after script fail to help hundreds his customers to get rid of matte swellings and stiff joints.
And it was this same man asserted that a remedy coveted would be compounded that make creaky, swollen, joint works with just an smoothness as they ever did.

BEARS ROUT
RY. SIGNAL MAN
LEWISTOWN, Pa., Jan. 18.—Cecil E. Bell, block operator at a lonely railroad station near here, one dark night recently received orders for a freight due at his station within a few minutes. He stepped out to await the arrival of the train and literally walked into the arms of two huge black bears, who made affectionate advances. Bell didn't even take a second look, but leaped back into the tower. The freight was soon within a short distance, when the engineer tooted the whistle. The bears fled panic-striken into the woods; Bell gingerly delivered the orders and fairly flew back into the tower.
